Strike Back is back. A new incarnation of the popular action series with new characters and a new cast has been greenlighted by Cinemax and Sky to film in 2017. Aussies Alin Sumarwata an Daniel MacPherson (The Shannara Chronicles) and English actors Roxanne McKee (Dominion) and Warren Brown (Luther) are set to star in the new season of the show — its sixth overall and fifth on Cinemax — from the franchise’s executive producer Andy Harries of Left Bank Pictures.

I hear Harries — who was behind the original season-long Strike Back on Sky starring Richard Armitage and Andrew Lincoln, and the Cinemax-Sky collaboration, toplined by Sullivan Stapleton and Philip Winchester, which ran for four seasons — had the idea for another reboot, which both networks embraced.

I hear the new Strike Back is evolving from the buddy cop formula of the original into a diverse ensemble in the mold of The Fast and the Furious franchise. And while the previous incarnations were focused largely on the remnants of Al-Qaeda, the storylines of the new Strike Back will reflect the era of ISIS. There are no current plans for Stapleton or Winchester to reprise their roles in guest starring stints but I hear that is a possibility.

In the new Strike Back, written by Jack Lothian, disavowed and disbanded, the Section program is restored in order to track down a notorious terrorist following a brutal prison break. Tasked with covert military intelligence and high-risk operations, the resurrected unit embarks on a lethal manhunt that will uncover a vast web of interconnected criminal activity. As the team journeys across the Middle East and Europe, they uncover a deadly conspiracy which threatens to overwhelm them all and change the face of modern warfare forever.

Sumarwata plays Gracie Novin, a gear-head who is looking to make the step up. Genuine, honest to the point of bluntness, she’s the heart and soul of the team. MacPherson plays Samuel Wyatt, a bar-room philosopher who works best alone and has no intention of being dragged into a team situation. McKee plays Natalie Roberts, who comes from a military family, excels at psychological profiles and seeking weaknesses in others, although she might be blinded to her own fault-lines. Brown is Daniel “Mac” Macallister, a man of his word, affable, physically capable, and driven by a desire to avenge the team he’s lost.

Lothian, who serves as showrunner, executive produces with Harries and Sharon Hughff for Left Bank Pictures. Michael J. Bassett will serve as director and executive producer, Bill Shephard as producer.

In addition to the four seasons of Strike Back Cinemax co-produced with Sky, the U.S. network in 2013 aired Sky’s first season as Strike Back: Origins.

MacPherson also is filming Ava Duvernay’s A Wrinkle In Time and has a recurring on Fox’s upcoming drama APB. He is repped by UTA, Management 360 and Australian agency Mark Morrissey & Assoc.

Going to miss Stapleton and Winchester, but I think a new team will work for a new incarnation of the show.

I'm game for this as long as they continue to make it like the Winchester/Stapleton seasons. Fun, violent and sexy and not too British like Origins. Origins was a slog to watch even though it essentially launched the franchise & was only 6 episodes.

I am glad they are leaving things open for Scott and Stonebridge to return in some form if that becomes feasible.

Holy shit. Awesome! Get some charismatic actors like Stapleton and Winchester, though. They really made the show what it is.

Edit: I see it is already cast. Hope the people are half as good as Winchester and Stapleton.

I'm all for more Strike Back. Loved all the seasons (even the first one, even with it's more serious tone). Not exactly enthused by the casting mind, Sumarwata and MacPherson both have a high point or Neighbours over here in Aus. Here's hoping they surprise me.

One of Strike Back's Producer/Directors posted this on Twitter today

I'm guessing they are prepping it for a 2018 launch.

Another update from Bassett. As I guessed, 2018 is when this comes back:

Glad it's coming back and I'm not surprised that they changed the cast. They literary killed off the main character after the 1st season (Origins). So, I'm guessing they scrapped their plans for a movie with Stapleton and Winchester.

Comments are mixed on the Cinemax FB page - I can see why. Doesn't come across as terribly inspired.

comments based on what ? they haven't made it yet !

As long as it's more great action, bit of sex and just all round coolness, i'm happy

I don't need to see anything ground breaking, just more of the same

The people upset only associate the show with Stapleton and Winchester and won't accept a new cast.

They are both busy with their current shows, so it's probably not feasible for them to be on this "5th season"

re: Strike Back (Cinemax) -- Season 5 Thread -- Premieres 2/2/18

After watching the first UK version, at first i was disappointed that the guy in that one was killed off at the start of the US version but it didn't take long for the new cast to grow on me

The show killed off a lot of character and always brought on new good ones

they can do it again

The action is the star of this show, more so than the stars

I just marathon'd all of Strike Back in January. Fucking great show. It'll be hard to replicate the chemistry that Stapleton and Winchester had though. The action is great, but the characters are what made the show.

That's a pretty generic looking trailer.

I don't have Cinemax, so I guess I'll be looking into subscribing for a month after all these air.

That isn't really a trailer, just a quick teaser.

I'm sure we'll see longer version no later December.
