The Grand Tour - s: Clarkson, Hammond, May - Series Thread (Amazon Prime)

This started today, it will "air" weekly (Fridays) for the next 12 weeks.

It seems like they just gave the crew unlimited money and said go

I really enjoyed the first episode. I felt like Top Gear, unlike the actual Top Gear reboot which felt like a cheap imitation.

Yeah, it was basically Top Gear before the awful reboot.

I rarely saw Top Gear. This had some cool car sequences and some terrible studio banter. Here's the thing though : it's not a network show. Who says it has to run an hour (or 71 minutes)? They should have watched the pilot, realized there was some deadly awful studio bits and just cut them. I would have much preferred 40 minutes of car stuff without the embarrassing "comedy" bits in the tent.

You should check out 5th Gear. It's hosted by former Top Gear cast members prior to Clarkson, Hammond and May and it is basically a continuation of the original Top Gear format. BBC said they couldn't use the 'Top Gear' title since they were going to relaunch Top Gear in 2001. They focus mainly on the cars and the filming sequences are on par with GT and Top Gear.

I was pretty much grinning ear to ear throughout. I think the point of the studio banter in the premiere episode was to set expectations of there not being much of it for the rest of the series -- guest stars all "died," no table topics to discuss, etc. They realized that Top Gear fans would be expecting that stuff and were trying to let them down easy. At least I hope that's the case. Since I've never been much of a car guy I'm more keen on the interplay between the three leads and was happy to see it still as entertaining as always.

Yeah, on the one hand, a lot of the studio stuff (especially the Air Force bit) was corny. But like mugwump said, they're setting the tone for the season, and hopefully getting rid of some of that stuff.

I'm wondering whether they filmed all the segment stuff before all of the tent/hosting things.

The skits were pretty dumb. I just want to see them drive cars, do crazy races/challenges, and insult each other.

I was really excited for this and amazed how much advertising Amazon put into this (airing during NFL games).

Episode 1 wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. It was more of a reunion show and the band shaking off the rust.

Episode 2 was downright awful. The Vulcan bit was lackluster. Jeremy pretty much reused platitudes and scripts from previous car segments. The less said about the test lap the better. They apparently sent James off to some weird burnout session for an hour and cobbled together footage. He looked miserable. And then the film spoof on Live, Die, Repeat. My wife even said it was too over the top.

I hope they can quickly figure out what is working and what is not. If this first series is 12 weeks, I can't believe they filmed everything yet. Hopefully at a minimum they can drop the fake celebrity guests and exploding heads thing.

the guys area bit full of themselves but cars are cool

James getting sniped in perpetuity almost made up for that dog of a segment. And the American test track driver should take a tip from the Stig and keep his yap shut. Plus, I find it hard to believe that someone that large is getting the most out of those cars. I am glad that they're still avoiding having guest stars.

Yeah episode 2 I turned it off once it got to James doing burnouts.
Ep 1 I enjoyed

The action-sequence skit in episode 2 was terrible: overly long and not funny at all.

I'm not sure Amazon is getting its money's worth out of this show.

I agree that Episode 2 sucked. The terrorist skit dragged on forever. But if you gave up after that episode, give it another chance.

I thought Episode 3 & 4 were classic Top Gear episodes. Especially the 3rd one where they drove through Italy. I love the episodes where they do a long roadtrip.

Ex-Top Gear host Richard Hammond injured in Swiss crash

Former Top Gear host Richard Hammond has been flown to hospital after a crash while filming in Switzerland. The 47-year-old was on a practice run for a race in an electric car for Amazon Prime show The Grand Tour.

Mr Hammond "climbed out of the car himself before the vehicle burst into flames", the show said in a statement. The show's statement said Mr Hammond had been involved in a "serious crash" after completing the Hemberg Hill Climb in Switzerland, where a race takes place on Sunday.

He had been driving a "Rimac Concept One, an electric super car built in Croatia, during filming for The Grand Tour Season 2 on Amazon Prime, but very fortunately suffered no serious injury".

Frankly I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often considering what and where these guys often drive.

It was kinda sad seeing Clarkson tear up at the end of the series finale. It sounds like the show as it is today, The Grand Tour, is officially over, but they will still do specials from time to time that will air on Amazon.

I haven't watched much of this season yet. It's the last? Surprised Amazon wouldn't let them stick around as long as they wanted.

I just bought a 4k tv and I was looking for 4k content. And holy crap, The Grand Tour has some demo quality material. Woahhh! -eek-

I've seen different numbers floating around, but it looked like the original deal was for three seasons for around £160m ($208 million USD).

I'm sure their special episodes (where they are out of the tent) are their most popular, but also the most expensive. There are usually one or two episodes like that per season. The ones they had for this past season were great, including one where they essentially had to build a car from scratch with parts in the middle of nowhere.

I guess even if we get one or two of those a year, it's better than nothing.

Re: The Grand Tour - s: Clarkson, Hammond, May - Series Thread (Amazon Prime)

It was my understanding that they would do just the specials and get rid of the tent. do something like 4-6 episodes a year. and if that's the case I'm 100% on board. Though I like the reviews and the Ebola track, when they are out as a group is when they really shine.

Re: The Grand Tour - s: Clarkson, Hammond, May - Series Thread (Amazon Prime)

By the way he was getting choked up talking about it and with the montage of footage from both Top Gear and Grand Tour, it felt more like a farewell. I bet it's only a few specials per year. On top of that, all three of them are getting their own series on Amazon, so I think more time is going to be dedicated to getting those in production.

Is there an easy way to watch previous seasons of Top Gear anywhere? I saw some of the seasons available for purchase through Amazon Video, but didn't know if they were free on any other services.
