The Crown (Netflix) -- Queen Elizabeth II series from Peter Morgan

The Crown, the highly anticipated, new original series will premiere on Netflix, the world's leading Internet TV network, to a global audience on Friday, November 4, 2016. The 10-episode series will be available in 4K. Prepare to be welcomed into the coveted world of power and privilege and behind locked doors in Westminster and Buckingham Palace....the leaders of an empire await. The Crown reunites acclaimed writer Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) with director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) and producer Andy Harries (The Queen). Based on the award-winning play, The Audience, The Crown tells the inside story of Queen Elizabeth II's early reign, revealing the personal intrigues, romances, and political rivalries behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th Century. The Crown stars Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II, Matt Smith as Prince Phillip, John Lithgow as Sir Winston Churchill, Victoria Hamilton as the Queen Mother, Jared Harris as King George VI, Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret and Dame Eileen Atkins as Queen Mary, among others. A Netflix original series, The Crown focuses on Queen Elizabeth II as a 25-year-old newlywed faced with the daunting prospect of leading the world's most famous monarchy while forging a relationship with legendary Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill. The British Empire is in decline, the political world is in disarray, and a young woman takes the throne....a new era is dawning. Peter Morgan's masterfully researched scripts reveal the Queen's private journey behind the public facade with daring frankness. Prepare to be welcomed into the coveted world of power and privilege and behind locked doors in Westminster and Buckingham Palace....the leaders of an empire await.

This is essentially a prequel to The Queen.

10 episode first season. Already renewed for a second. I believe the plan is for this to go for 6 seasons and 60 episodes.

This is apparently the most expensive Netflix series to date.

I've been a fan of Claire Foy since she played Amy in Little Dorrit so I'll probably catch this at some point.

Never saw The Queen. But, it sounds interesting. However, not sure a period show about the back story of Queen Elizabeth II is must see binge watch material for the folks in this forum.

I have a lot on my plate already, so I don't know when or if I can sample this.

The Queen was from 2006. Starred Helen Mirren. This is from the same writer.

The Queen... The Crown... it's all the same thing.

I care nothing about the Royal Family and it's history - but if the reviews are really good, then I may have to give it a try.

This is less about Queen Elizabeth, and more about the entire royal family and Winston Churchill. We've watched the first episode so far, and it is very good.

We are three episodes in, and hooked.

Absolutely fantastic show so far- if you liked the first episode, number 2 and 3 are even better in my opinion.

re: The Crown (Netflix) -- Queen Elizabeth II series from Peter Morgan

The Wrap somehow obtained 1st weekend viewership numbers for The Crown and apparently it's very low.

http://www.thewrap.com/the-crown-net...ratings-debut/

Netflix’s “The Crown” didn’t draw viewership worthy of a king, despite its reported palatial price tag.

The original series debuted to just 496,000 total viewers over its opening weekend, according to Symphony Advanced Media data that was provided exclusively to TheWrap. That places the premiere 26th out of the 35 originals measured by Symphony AM since the inception of its VideoPulse technology last year. “The Crown” fared better than “Bloodline” Season 2, but was worse than the fifth season of “Longmire” on Netflix.

Either folks plates are very full right now or most have no interest in a period drama about the Royal family.

That doesn't really surprise me at all. I'll check this out at some point but I have too much to watch.

Finished it last night, it's like 70% Queen - 30% Churchill.

I really enjoyed this. Vanessa Kirby who plays Margaret is gorgeous. I think Lithgow is doing a great job as Churchill, but i still would have preferred a Brit actor.

One thing i noticed is in just about every version of Queen Elizabeth II's story I've see, Prince Phillip is almost always portrayed is a bit of a dick. One wonders how close to the truth this is.

For any of you on the fence about this, FWIW I highly recommend.

Very good writing, beautifully shot, and a compelling (and apparently reasonably true) story. We are not much for royalty and such, but man, we have found ourselves hooked but good.

Hope you enjoy as well....

I am a fan of Peter Morgan's work and his past films on the Royal Family and Tony Blair. Maybe I'll give this a watch in the summer. I just don't have time to make this a priority now though.

Seems there are plenty of stories to continue this in the 60's.
