Stan Against Evil (IFC) -- S: John C. McGinley

IFC announced today that new horror-comedy Stan Against Evil will premiere with two back-to-back episodes Wednesday, November 2 at 10PM and 10:30PM. Additionally, in the spirit of spooks and frights, a special airing of the premiere episode will haunt viewers Halloween night, October 31 at 10PM on IFC. Starring John C. McGinley (Scrubs) and Janet Varney (You're the Worst), Stan Against Evil will air the remainder of its 8-episode first season Wednesdays at 10PM throughout the fall. Stan Against Evil follows Stan Miller (McGinley), a perpetually disgruntled former sheriff of a small New England town who was forced into retirement. Stan has trouble relinquishing his authority to Evie Barret (Varney), the tough and beautiful new sheriff in town, but they form an unlikely alliance when both begin to realize things are not quite right in their quaint New England town. Together, they valiantly fight a plague of unleashed demons that have been haunting the town, which just happens to be built on the site of a massive 17th century witch burning. I enjoyed the premiere enough to stick around for the season since it's only 8 episodes.
McGinley was of course great with the "don't give a crap" attitude. |

If you love Ash vs Evil Dead you will love this. Very similar but different enough to make it worth a watch. Not surprisingly McGinley was a hoot.

Second episode was a slight step down, but still better than most TV on currently.

I saw the 1 hour premiere last week and it was fun for the most part, but not really that memorable. It was far from "better than most TV on currently". There is so much quality scripted TV right now. A half hour dark horror comedy like this is far from the best. I did think McGinley was fine playing an asshole. This show is quite similar to Ash vs Evil Dead on Starz, which I think is a much better and more hilarious show. |

I've enjoyed the first few episodes. Definitely a take on "Ash vs. Evil Dead" in tone and subject, and not quite as good, but it's not bad. I like John C. McGinley a lot anyways, so I'll keep watching.

Episode 3 was a fantastic step back up with the speed dating episode (it was pretty well a given that Stan's succubus was going to turn out that way -- every woman is a succubus to him). Feeding bacon to a pig ... rotfl
Episode 4 drifted back down to "meh" level though. |

I've been liking this show a lot. It's a more episodic "demon of the week" take than Ash vs Evil Dead, but it's been getting into the mythology of the show in the past few episodes.
Favorite line from this past week: "To be clear, I'm supposed to kill my wife because Hitler told me to do it on TV." |

Just caught up on the final episodes ... Overall I really liked it. A fun and easy way to kill 45 minutes each week (2 thirty-minute episodes minus commercials). The cast is great and has good chemistry.

This is great news. The one thing I didn't like about the first season was the cliffhanger it ended on, so I'm happy there will be a second season to see that resolved.

Yes!!! Hopefully a longer episode order ...
I didn't get why they did 8 thirty-minute epsiodes but then ran them 2 at a time for four weeks. |

The season 2 premiere was a 2 parter that resolves the clifhanger from last season.
IFC posted the third episode on Youtube a few weeks ago under the incorrect title "Stan Against Evil | Season 2 Premiere 'Curse of the Werepony' | Full Episode": It looks like IFC is again running 2 episodes a week, so both "Curse of the Werepony" and "Girls' Night" air next week. |
