Haters Back Off! (Netflix) -- Miranda Sings -- Discussion Thread

I decided to give this a try, and I'm now several episodes in. It's apparently based on YouTube character Miranda Sings, played by Colleen Ballinger. I don't recall if I've ever seen any of her videos on YouTube, but I decided to give the show a try. It has Angela Kinsey from The Office as Miranda's mom, so if nothing else, it's got that going for it.

It's not overly hilarious, but there are some laugh-out-loud moments. Mainly, it's like watching a train wreck, and you just sit there amazed at how utterly delusional Miranda and her uncle are about her talent and capability of making her a star. Acting-wise, I'd say Angela and the girl playing Miranda's younger(?) sister are probably the high points.

Anyone else watching this?

Yeah, I watched all 8 episodes. It is like watching a train wreck; you can't help but watch and cringe at the stupid shit she does. I feel really bad for the sister since she seems to be the only normal person in the whole series. Overall, I enjoyed it.

I thought it was OK for what it was.

The concept isn't far off from Eastbound and Down.

Miranda is delusional in that she has a very high opinion of herself and Uncle Jim (Steve Little) enables that - just like Kenny Powers has of himself and is enabled/idolized by Stevie (also played by Steve Little)... although Kenny does have some pitching talent. Miranda's trying to be a star and Kenny's trying to get back to being a star.

I also felt bad for Miranda's sister... a nice/smart person that gets treated like crap. I also thought she was pretty cute.

The guy who plays Patrick does a nice job with the character.

I gave this a chance on the OP's recommendation. I've watched the first five episodes over the weekend and am enjoying it so. The show is goofy, and exists in a world apart from reality.

I like the Miranda character, she's oddly compelling. I've never heard of her, but I guess this character was a huge deal on YouTube, as Jerry Seinfeld seems to be doing a lot to promote her (they were on the Tonight Show together, she's in a Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee with him).

Not sure what age group this show is intended for. Kids? Pre-teens?

I've gotten a couple of solid laughs out of each episode. I hope they do more of these.

Show has a Napolean Dynamite feel to it.

I got that feel a few times - especially when Miranda runs outside to get ice cream from Patrick and she just stands there eating it like a pig while he watches.

Here's a scene that struck me as just how revealing Miranda's delusion is...(spoilered for those who haven't finished the season)

Spoiler:
At first, and through several episodes, I thought Miranda was just mean to anyone, including her family members, who didn't go along with her on her quest for fame and on how talented she thinks she is. But when her sister tries to get into art school only to find that Miranda had ruined her paintings with glitter and macaroni, it turned out Miranda wasn't being mean at all. I think she really, really thought she was helping, and she just had absolutely no clue whatsoever what she had done, and it made the scene all the more sad.

Caught the first episode of this last week. Interesting that this character is a a 100% contrast to the actress portraying her. Ballinger apparently split from her husband about a month ago.

Good show. It's kind of rough to get through. So cringe-y. Much like Jody Hill's work.

I actually Google'd "Haters Back Off Jody Hill" to see if he was connected in any way.

Starting watching S1 today and if it wasn't for the antics of the uncle, the show would be a total chalkboard scratch. Nice to see Angela Kinsey in something since The Office.

I'm 5 out of the 8 episodes in. I'm liking it enough. Really just more of the same to me.

Finished up S2 and found it probably even more enjoyable than S1. The "Modelling at the Hospital" episode was gold. Liked how they ended the season as well. They cleared up question I had about the uncle's specific relationship to the rest of the family.

The way S2 ended, I assumed that was the series finale.

Not sure if a whole new thread is justified, but there is a new Netflix Special that dropped today.

Watched some of this. Didn't realize she had such a huge kid following.

I haven't watched this show, but I did watch an episode of Jerry Seinfeld's show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee which featured Ballinger in character as Miranda Sings as Jerry's guest. Very cringey. Fans of this show might want to check it out.
