Once a powerful lawyer, Billy McBride is now burned out and washed up, spending more time in a bar than a courtroom. This series is created by David E. Kelley, the creator of The Practice, Boston Legal and Ally McBeal.
Interview with DEK about the show.

For the record, it's not a legal procedural. It's a serialized legal thriller. He says if the show gets another season, it would be a new storyline/case.
Alan Sepinwall gave it a glowing review. A B+ He's seen 6 of the 8 episodes.

Due to the massive glut of shows right now, not expecting anyone here to jump at watching this right away. But after Fargo, Thornton is a draw now for TV.
Kevin Costner was originally asked to play his part, but passed.

I really interested in watching this, but I'm going to wait to resubscribe for Prime until the new season of Red Oaks comes out.

Just finished.
Good watch for Billy Bob, story seemed a little thin tho.
overall I enjoyed it, and 8 eps makes it a very manageable binge.

I just finished this and I really liked it. I hope they make another season. Billy Bob Thornton was great in this.

Binged this over the weekend. Obviously this show isn't re-inventing the wheel, -there's nothing here you haven't seen before. However, its got a good cast and it's a breezy watch. It took two episodes to really get into it, because personally I'm tired of "He was great once, but now he's crawled into the bottle" storyline.

Decided to watch this after the Golden Globe win. I'm three episodes in. Was surprised with the Rosalyn Shays 2.0 they pulled in the second episode, but it worked. Thinking they are laying on the evilness of the opposing law firm a little thick -- it's a little cartoonish at this point and doesn't fly for me. They could still be very bad people without doing...all they are doing to Billy. I'm in for the full run though.
I found The Night Of far more involving than this show so far though.

Clayne Crawford is not actually in this show as the OP stated, at least not in Season One. I was pretty sure I never saw him and then a quick check on IMDb verifies that he's nowhere near it.

Finished it today. It was entertaining enough, but I certainly wouldn't call it "Fantastic ". I stand by my earlier statement: they went WAY overboard with how evil the big law firm and their client were. It was totally absurd, as were some of the judge's rulings and some of Billy's decisions. In the end you can't have the balance of power that unfair to the little guy or it robs the drama of all potential suspense.
That said, I liked most of the performances-- the one exception being surprisingly William Hurt who played his role like some Marvel super villain and without a shred of logical decision making. The ending would have been much more poignant if we could have seen even a shred of humanity in his character rather than just hearing from other characters about how he used to be different.
As far as I can tell, this hasn't been renewed for S2 yet, but should be based on how many people watched it (and the Golden Globe that, I'm sorry, was totally undeserved as though BBT was good, he's not in the same ballpark as Odenkirk, Malik and Rhys this past season). I hope they take the series to a more conventional legal story next year without all the dive bars, storage room offices, sleazy motels and hookers with a heart of gold. A tiny firm vs another huge company (or maybe the Federal government) would probably be compelling enough.

Renewed for a 2nd season. Former Dexter and Nurse Jackie EP Clyde Phillips hired as new showrunner:

Finished season 1 today. I liked it and I'll tune in for a 2nd season, but I agree with the sentiment that the big law firm fit too many "evil villain" stereotypes, including William Hurt as the boss. Always isolated and in the dark, has an ugly scar, watches seemingly everything on red-tinted screens, etc. It was a bit over the top.
But again, I enjoyed it overall.

That article also mentions cast members who were part of the William Hurt's law firm returning. I wonder if they will again be up against the same firm -- that seems like a bit of a stretch but I could roll with it.
I never realized that it was Dwight Yoakam playing Wendell in the show last year. A Swing Blade reunion that I totally missed!

Sign me up!
That has a VERY different look than Season 1 which was almost entirely interiors or night scenes. Case doesn't look all that fascinating yet. Didn't recognize any of the new cast members besides Paul Williams (natch) and Mark Duplass.

I'll have to watch an episode or two tomorrow. I've been trying to watch Justified, Sneaky Pete, and Breaking Bad this summer. A new season of Goliath will probably delay me on my binge goals, but it will be so worth it.
