Vanessa Marquez, former "ER" star, shot dead by police

i mean sure she wasn't huge at all, but i used to watch and love er and I totally remember her. too bad...

Vanessa Marquez, who starred on "ER" as nurse Wendy Goldman, was shot and killed by South Pasadena, California, police in her home on Thursday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said. The 49-year-old actress pointed what appeared to be a handgun at officers before they shot her, the sheriff's department said in a statement.

South Pasadena police officers conducting a welfare check in an apartment complex Thursday afternoon found Marquez having seizures, the sheriff's department said. In a press conference, Lt. Joe Mendoza of the sheriff's department's homicide bureau told reporters that Marquez was "gravely disabled," according to the South Pasadenan.

The sheriff's department said authorities attempted to offer Marquez medical care for over an hour and a half.

"At the time [of the shooting] there was an LA County mental health clinician here with the officers," Mendoza said, according to the newspaper. "They began to communicate with her, she became very uncooperative and during that contact she armed herself with a handgun, she pointed it at the officers and an officer-involved shooting occurred."

Marquez was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead. Police determined that Marquez had been holding a BB gun that "resembled a semi-automatic handgun," according to Mendoza.

Marquez acted on "ER" from 1994 to 1997. In 2017, she accused George Clooney of hurting her career during their "ER" days, saying he helped "blacklist" her when she reportedly spoke up about alleged harassment on the show. Clooney denied the accusation.

Marquez also appeared on "Seinfeld," "Melrose Place" and others. She also appeared on a 2005 episode of A&E's "Intervention" to address her depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and shopping addiction.

Marquez's death is under investigation, which is common for police-involved shootings

"Starred" is a stretch by CBS News, but I remember her. Sorry to hear the news.

They were in her house, she was being uncooperative... which shows she didn't want them there. They should have left at that point. Instead she picks up a plastic bb gun like an idiot and gets shot. This could have been avoided if they just got out of her house and left her alone. If she was able to move around and talk and hold a bb gun, the "welfare check" obviously didn't need to go further.

The story didn't state the warfare check was for her specifically, it was being done at her apartment complex. She was seen having a seizure. They could've been there for her but it doesn't matter now.

Really gotta disagree here (at least on the "just leave" part). We weren't there, so we don't know, but what if it looked like she was suicidal, or potentially threatening violence to someone else.

In fact, this kinda looks like "suicide by cop", which is sad for everyone involved.

So if she was "looking suicidal", the best course of action is to... "kill her"?

This reminds me of that meme that was circulating of a guy who looked like he was about to jump off a bridge so the cops course of action was to shoot him to death instead.

Obviously none of us were there so there is a lot we don't know in this case... As pointed out, we're not even sure the cops were there for her or what reason she was agitated exactly... All we do know is the cops were there, she didn't want them to be, and she ended up shot dead for holding a bb gun. :/

It is possible that it might very well likely have been "a suicide by cop" attempt, but it's also possible that she had no intentions of being killed or killing herself too.

If this was a case of "suicide by cop," it's a passive form of suicide where the person tries to get the police to shoot them, usually by pulling a gun or making the police think they have a gun.

Suicide by cop was the first thing I thought of when I read this.

I truly hate these stories, especially when police exonerated, but she pulled out a B.B. gun which was a threat and kinda justified, but always going for the one or multiple kill shots is extreme. A well placed wound should suffice and police officers should have more restraint in many situations. They seem to get nervous and thus trigger happy and that’s just not good...

You've seen too many movies. There's no such thing as shooting to wound. They weren't sure if it was a BB gun or real gun.

Imagine if it was a real gun and they just shot her to "wound" her and she started shooting back. Police are trained, if they do have to pull their guns and shoot, aim for center mass.

Besides, bullet wounds are nasty things. Even if they could somehow aim to wound, who knows if it might nick an artery or something and the person bleeds out.
