re: The Gong Show is coming back on ABC
"The Gong Show" makes it triumphant return to television, as the iconic and irreverent talent show competition makes its way into the 21st century with a bang! Celebrity judges Will Arnett, Ken Jeong and Zach Galifianakis are set to praise, critique and gong unusually talented and unique performers, on the premiere of "The Gong Show," THURSDAY, JUNE 22 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network.
British comedic legend Tommy Maitland hosts.
Tonight's acts include a unicycler - dressed in a yeti suit - playing flaming bagpipes, a married couple performing a choreographed banana spitting routine, a woman who plays the harmonica with a tarantula in her mouth, an obsessed fan who serenades judge Will Arnett with opera, and a scary wrestler who sings a children's lullaby.
At the end of the show, the winning act with the highest judges' scores will receive a fabulous "The Gong Show" trophy and a check for $2,000 and 17 cents.
"The Gong Show" is produced by Den of Thieves, Electric Avenue Productions and Principato Young Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television and is taped in front of a live audience. "The Gong Show" is executive produced by Will Arnett, Evan Prager, Jesse Ignjatovic, Conrad Green, Peter Principato and Marc Forman. Jared Morell, Jordan Barrow, David Bohnert, Chris Choun and Dan Norris are co-executive producers.
"The Gong Show" is broadcast in 720 Progressive (720P), ABC's selected HDTV format with a 5.1 channel surround sound. A TV parental guideline will be assigned closer to the airdate.

I assume these will all be "bad acts", -or "geek" acts (in the "Carnival" sense of the term); basically anything that wouldn't be accepted on "America's Got Talent". On the original show, there was the occasional talented person.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking...I remember seeing a commercial for it a couple of nights ago and thinking who the "F" is Tommy Maitland? Now I get it, and if they go full bonkers with it, then I'm 100% on board.

I've tried to steer clear of news about this show ahead of time, but couldn't resist opening the thread now that it starts tonight.
It could be brilliant, it could be horrifying. Either would be memorable. In other words, just like the original.

Last night someone mentioned that the Gong Show should come back. I replied that it was and told him it would be on tonight after checking my phone. Let the fun begin.

I had a good time with this. Felt like the same light hearted goofy fun that Match game is.
BTW the New Pyramid is so boring, dull and I think it's because of Strahan.
Anyone notice that about a third of the acts that came on stage at the end weren't even performers during the ep including Penn Gillette who came on holding a paper bag.

Actually, I didn't notice, -I wish I had paid more attention. Of course, they run so many promos showing a cacophony of different celebrity judges and weird acts that it's all a bit confusing (clearly, these are all "in the can"). Last night's episode was listed as "102" on my DVR, and next week's "103", -I wonder when we'll get the pilot. I know that dreadful "Toy" show on ABC was all over the place in terms of episode order.

This was surprisingly good. I had to watch for the bizarre/brilliant idea of Mike Myers hosting in character and it didn't disappoint. If they can continue to get quality judges that get the joke (Elizabeth Banks, Will Forte, and Fred Armisen in the preview for next week ), this could be a fun summer show.

I caught this at the midpoint with Uncle Clutch and I agree, having judges interacting with the talent and having fun will make this an enjoyable show. Will Arnett awarding his "10" on the singer's custom tee shirt...

I thought it was pretty dumb honestly. Liked the judges on the first episode but most of the acts were just bad and not in a way where they were funny but just stupid. I honestly couldn't believe the couple who did nothing but spit chewed banana into other people's mouths is what won.

Re: The Gong Show is coming back on ABC
We finally watched this last night, and good god Mike Meyers makeup is just so distracting. We enjoyed the show well enough (banana thing was horrifying) but I don't know if I can take his act for an entire hour at a time.
Please tell me that it's a one time thing with the make-up!?!
