Re: The Simpsons (FOX) -- Season 28 Thread -- premieres 9/25/16

I've started watching The Simpsons again since they are now airing it with NO logo bugs or Twitter hashtags. Coming back from commercial the rating and local station logo are onscreen for about 10 seconds but then disappear, allowing the show to be seen in clutter-free bliss as all shows used to be. I know the show's producers have never liked that practice, as back in 1994 I got a letter from them thanking me for complaining to Fox about it when they had started it. Too bad Fox still isn't giving their other shows the same respect. They seem to think I should go on Twitter instead of actually paying attention to them.

Still WAY too many commercials, but I can tolerate those a bit more just because it's the only current thing I watch on the air besides the news and such (and I usually change channels during the news if a commercial comes on.)

Re: The Simpsons (FOX) -- Season 28 Thread -- premieres 9/25/16

Alan, you might want to check out TBS's broadcast of the baseball playoffs. They've been airing it clutter-free for the most part outside of a small box for the score. It stands in stark contrast to the other channels airing playoff baseball.

At this point the Halloween episodes mostly consist of self-referential gags to prior Halloween episodes and an obsession with killing familiar characters in gruesome manners. This wasn't the best one I've seen but would rank it somewhere in the middle. I can't believe we've now had 28 Halloween episodes.

That's to be expected - they've had about 80 stories in these Halloween episodes, and you kind of run out of Halloween material at around 60...

Fox typically gets Simpsons content yanked from YouTube but you can stream through FX.

EDIT:

This should help:

That's it. Thank you.

Another question: Have they ever done a satire of Carpenter's Halloween?

Re: The Simpsons (FOX) -- Season 28 Thread -- premieres 9/25/16

The Simpsons just received a renewal that will send it into the record books.

On Friday, Fox ordered two more seasons of the animated comedy — yes, 29th and 30th season — which will bring the tally of episodes to a whopping 669. That will propel The Simpsons past Gunsmoke — which stands at 635 — as the prime time scripted series boasting the largest number of episodes.

The series will have all six main voice actors aboard for these coming seasons. Last year, they signed a four-season deal that ran through season 30, with a network option for seasons 29 and 30.

The show, which boasts 32 Emmys on its mantle, kicked off its run in December 1989 after beginning as a series of shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show. The Simpsons celebrated the 600-episode milestone last month with its annual Halloween installment, Treehouse of Horror.

In a statement, Fox CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman said: “This is yet another record-setting moment for what is truly a landmark series. The Simpsons has meant so much to the network, the studio and everyone at Fox, and its continued cultural impact around the globe is a testament to the combined brilliance of Matt, Jim and Al [Groening, Brooks, and Jean, the show’s executive producers]. Congratulations to everyone who works on this groundbreaking series – from the voice cast and producers to the writers and production team– you comprise one of the greatest collections of creative talent in the history of the medium. And to the millions of Simpsons fans around the world, thank you for watching all these years. We’re happy to tell you there’s lots more to come.”

The show makes too much money to be pulled off the air. It has anchored their Sunday line-up for years and years.

The show will go on as long as Dan Castellaneta is willing to voice Homer.

That and it's huge internationally. Even if every American stopped watching they'd still crank out episodes.

I actually quit watching after the first commercial break, which I hadn't done in a long time.

The way they write episodes now tends to produce more inconsistency week to week. They seem like much less of a team effort these days and more the singular comedic voice of one or two writers. Which can make for funny episodes but also makes for poor episodes like this one.

Re: The Simpsons (FOX) -- Season 28 Thread -- premieres 9/25/16

The Simpsons had their best episodes in years after this Sunday's football game. It was a two-part episode about Mr. Burns becoming friendly with a hip-hop business mogul voiced by Rick Ross. The b story mocked the Hamptons by having Marge open up a boutique shop.

Funny stuff and the plot actually needed both episodes to cover everything.

Interesting episode this Sunday, the Simpsons did something I don't remember seeing before. The new episode's entire plot was a direct continuation from the events seen in the classic Kamp Krusty episode from Season 4.

They even joked part 3 of Kamp Krusty would be seen next in season 52.

Season finale last night. Not bad.

This bit made me laugh harder than it should have.

It was a good episode. 2 great laughs for me were
Marge's phone call to Grandpa
and
the quote that was something like "you're the greatest person I know one thing about!"

Re: The Simpsons (FOX) -- Season 28 Thread -- premieres 9/25/16

I thought it was a decent season with many solid episodes. They have hit the point though where many of the better jokes seem to be recycling older episodes.

It's interesting watching the classic years compared to now in what supporting characters are heavily used. Martin, Apu and Chief Wiggum used to get more lines in the early years.

Re: The Simpsons (FOX) -- Season 28 Thread -- premieres 9/25/16

Longtime music composer Alf Clausen fired.

Clausen came aboard the animated Fox comedy in 1990, early in season 2, and has scored the animated Fox comedy ever since, earning a whopping 23 Emmy nominations for his joyful soundscapes along the way, including a pair of wins in 1997 and 1998. The 76-year-old Clausen told Variety, which first reported the news, that a Simpsons producer informed him that he would not be scoring the show moving forward, and that a “different kind of music” would be used.

Re: The Simpsons (FOX) -- Season 28 Thread -- premieres 9/25/16

I've watched series from first episodes. I have the entire last season on my DVR, unwatched. I don't even really have a desire to watch them. I was just doing it out of habit. This may be the signal to just cut the cord.

That was the first thing I thought. Fox has been pretty ruthless managing Simpsons behind the scenes. I am surprised they pushed him out at this stage, but television executives are cold-blooded sociopaths. I've bought every CD released by the show and really love the two compilation CDs of music interludes and gags.

One day we are going to get a great tell-all book from key cast members when the show ends.

There have been three compilations, Songs in the Key of Springfield, Go Simpsonic with the Simpsons and Testify.

Wow, that's crazy to let him go after all this time. Definitely an integral part to the show.

There are actually several more albums if you include stuff like the Yellow album.

I consider the music as important as the cast. Huge mistake. Massively insulting to think you can simply replace Alf.
