NBC just renewed this for 2 seasons.

Great news.

I guess it's good news if the showrunners have a true vision of where they want to go with this. I can easily see it spin out of control with mediocrity if it just rambles on.

Not looking forward to the flashback episode where the dad dies.

I could see this getting at least a 5-6 season run like Parenthood.

As far as flashbacks goes, they have backtracked a little going back to before the kids were born. But, the last we saw of the kids & Jack it was the late 1980's. They potentially still have the 90's and 2000's to cover. We don't know exactly when Jack died.

And then season 7 will just be a massive flashback to Season 1.

Last night's episode was another good one. I think this was the 1st all flashback episode.

Some interesting backstory with Dr. Katowsky along with how Randall came into the picture.

That was a really solid performance by Gerald McRaney. This show always continues to surprise me

I too was impressed with Gerald McRaney. His small parts in the prior episodes were great, but he really nailed it when given the spotlight in this one. Also liked the new story about how the firefighter could have ended up adopting Randal. Wonder if we will see that couple again.

We will just know more about his death, when he died or something like that.

We won't have the "death" episode this season. They will save that one for later. S3 maybe?

I think Jack faked his own death to get out of paying his father back. He'll show up alive in the present eventually. Or else Jack is killed by his father.

I resisted watching this show because I already watch too much TV, but my wife wanted to watch, so I recorded it for her. I got hooked almost immediately. What a great show. We finally got caught up last night, and now it's going to be tough to wait a week for the next episode.

I agree the Gerald McRaney did a terrific job with the flashback episode this week.

Re: This Is Us (NBC) -- Season 1 Thread -- Premieres 9/20/16

I wanted to air something that didn't feel right with me. And please let me know if I missed something here...

When Jack's buddy took him golfing and Jack couldn't enjoy himself. He wanted to go back to what the other guys thought he could use a break from.

Where I am going is the Super Bowl ep where he couldn't let the issue go for 4 hours of a football game. I feel that Jack is becoming a fictional (i.e. non-realistic) character to suck the female viewership in.

This is only my take and welcome any comments to prove me wrong with this character.

All the characters in the show are romanticized, and the show is primarily aimed at the female audience.

he was around for the football scuffle when Randall and Kevin were on opposing teams, so it's gotta be high school years.

And Ferg... wow, he's a dick.

Re: This Is Us (NBC) -- Season 1 Thread -- Premieres 9/20/16

could you imagine the showrunners pitching this show? the reveal of the dad dying early on... the morbidly obese female lead... the gay dying other dad... Mandy Moore... the disjointed time jumping narrative... I'm surprised (and thrilled) it was grinlit. kudos to whomever pulled the trigger on it.

Re: This Is Us (NBC) -- Season 1 Thread -- Premieres 9/20/16

It's NBC, they usually go for shows like the in the past years. And they usually fail. Some shows are actually good, and have some hardcore fans, but ratings are abismal. Some are saved a couple of seasons because the critics love them though.

Regarding stopgap post, I actually thought the same a while back. Jack is just too perfect. Perfect husband. Perfect dad. Same with Randall. Most men in the show are actually too "perfect". Women in the show, in general, are the ones with all the defects. I think Miguel is the only not so perfect man in the show until now.

So, what year did Jack died? Before 2000?
have they mentioned how he died? disease? accident?

they have not said how he dies.

they did give him a drinking problem that episode... so not entirely perfect.

Re: This Is Us (NBC) -- Season 1 Thread -- Premieres 9/20/16

Nothing about how and when Jack dies specifically. Only clues to the time frame given scenes they have sown when he was alive. I do wonder if we will be watching an episode in that time frame in the future and WHAM, tragic accident!

Loved the introduction of Sophie. Although it was easy to see coming when he was told to pick THE one.

They sure have made Kevin to be one hell of a hot chick magnet. I guess is we are going to get far less Sloane in the future, adding Alexandra Breckenridge is a great trade off.
