Re: This Is Us (NBC) -- Season 1 Thread -- Premieres 9/20/16

Really good Turkey Day episode.

The road trip from hell subplot with the Pearsons was fun and that was a really awkward dinner party.

Only a matter of time before Randall found out the truth from Rebecca.

It didn't hit me until the previous episode that Kevin's co-star/new girlfriend is Janet Montgomery from Salem.

It's going to be really sad whenever the episode airs featuring Jack's death.

They're right, Police Academy 3: Back in Training is a much better "family film" than 9 1/2 Weeks.

I wonder how long this show can keep up with having us learn something interesting/new about the family each week. When does the Mandy Moore/Guy from Heroes timeline become irrelevant?

I completely understood the football episode. When I watch a game I get very angry when things go wrong. I've actually lost friends from cursing too much at bad calls, etc...

Now, I only watch football alone and when my team is eliminated I'm out. No longer caring about the Super Bowl.

I was hoping Mandy wouldn't go the singing route, but alas.

She went there. I was hoping she would have left that out of the show. Would have respected her role more.

The current timeline of the Jack and Rebecca flashbacks is in the late 1980's. They still have the 90's and 2000's to cover. That could run at least 3-4 seasons depending on how fast they want to move the storytelling. For all we know, Jack could have died in the early 2000's. That's a long stretch to cover.

She isn't a producer, and was likely hired for that reason.

Re: This Is Us (NBC) -- Season 1 Thread -- Premieres 9/20/16

a show like this is usually not my cup of tea, but god damnit this show pulls at me as father of triplets who are roughly the same age... the tongue rolling thing is something we've discussed... my wife and 3 of my 4 kids can do it... I, and one of my sons cannot...

anyhoo...

is that sexy Velma playright the same girl from the at&t commercials?

I think the "The Trip" (loved the double meaning) has been the best episode yet.

I assume he was hallucinating on whatever was in that smoothie but the info he was getting from the visions of his father he couldn't possibly know so that would mean he was a ghost? Am I over thinking this?

Such as? Seemed to me the vision of the father was just telling him things he should be thinking should think logically rather than emotionally.

Should be interesting to see how this plays out long term. Seemed that in the present the family wasn't already as close as they have shown in the past and now you've got this big revelation that makes the outsider feel even more like an outsider.

Re: This Is Us (NBC) -- Season 1 Thread -- Premieres 9/20/16

Yep.

It's a reflection of reality. As you grow up, you grasp to those memories and idealize them. So for them, growing up, when they were children, everything was almost perfect. They idealize that era. (Like everyone else in real life). So, yeah, currently they were far apart, physically and emotionally, so as a TV family we're seeing how they grow together, we will see how they grow apart, and finally how they come together again. Telling this story async, and being successful at that, is why this show is so successful.

10 minutes into the Christmas episode (12/6) and I'm already getting emotional... I love this show.

Interesting that Helen Hunt directed this episode.

Re: This Is Us (NBC) -- Season 1 Thread -- Premieres 9/20/16

^ yeah, noticed that as well. A couple notable guest stars too (Dennis O'Hare, Jimmi Simpson). I enjoyed this Christmas episode, but felt like they packed too much into it. Throw everything at the wall to see what sticks.

Jack, Rebecca and the doctor. Kevin and the play director. Kate and her surgery. William and his partner. Randall and the potential suicide save. Toby's collapse. I probably missed a couple.

Would have been nice to condense these plotlines and focus on a few more of them in detail.

Yep, too much in this episode.

And of course some people started boycotting the show because of William.

And I thought interesting to see the other "William" in this show.

I called the Toby thing as soon as they came downstairs. They'll use him as her motivation going forward on the show.

Outside of "old" Mandy Moore/Javi from Castle, which still takes me right out of the story, this show is fantastic. The actor playing Randall is amazing.

Oh, I know. OJ was one of my favorite TV seasons in recent memory. He was great in that as well.

He being in This is Us is actually what got me to watch it at first with my wife. Didn't think it was a show I would enjoy but checked it out for him. Now I'm hooked.

I've said it before, and he's not (yet) a big enough star, but he should be your black James Bond.
