Tonight's episode was a pretty strong and powerful one. Dark as well, sort of like when Gretchen's stand alone episode last season, but yeah, Edgar has some crazy demons.

Well that was certainly different. I liked seeing Edgar's perspective, but not like this. Sort of the same stuff that dragged the show down last year

Once I figured out it was an Edgar episode, it was easier to accept and sit back. It ended on a better note than I expected.

You're bonkers, Deftones. That may not have been all comedy, but that's what sets this show apart. I disagree that Gretchen's depression and how they tackled it and portrayed it on the show wasn't a lull in the second season, but how much of a real approach they took probably saved it to have a third season. That's what makes this show great, that it does realistically tackle stuff like depression, PTSD and relationships.

This is a comedy. I watch it to laugh and be entertained. While I can appreciate they are trying to be deeper than your typical comedy, this is not what the show has been sold as.

Yea, I prefer it to be more comedic instead of these serious type of episodes - so I was disappointed.
But at the same time, I still thought it was really interesting and well done and wanted to see more of it.

The show sometimes reminds me of Louie, where there are episodes that are really out there and are very hard to categorise - but are weird and different enough that I can't stop watching.

I agree, it handles the comedy and drama very deftly. Like the tones and the cast is great. I think Donohue's performance gets largely unnoticed, but she is dark too and does a great job.

What show did you start off in the pilot watching? This isn't your standard comedy, nor should there be some sort of defining set standard. But even from the pilot, it was delving into a more "deeper" view of things.

Not sure what you were sold on, but this has always had those more realistic undertones laid in to it. Can't really say that it took any crazy left turns or anything since it's always been on that road.

That really doesn't put any rest on your case. But season 1 did have a lot of darker stuff, this whole "realistic situations in my comedy?! HOW DARE THEY!" seems off, as if to say "Super powers in my Agents of Shield? THAT WASN'T PART OF THE DEAL!"

I still disagree greatly that season 2's "lulls" were that bad compared to what we were getting in terms of character growth and development and tackling real topics.

Ridiculous comparison. We knew exactly what agents of shield was. This was an unknown comedy that marketed itself as such: a comedy. There was nothing comedic about a lot of last year and this past episode.

Eh, I guess we just disagree, but what I'm seeing on screen, while not the knee slapper comedy, has funny moments while still walking a path that is different and creative.

They have to be doing something write and getting critical praise since this time they got renewed for a fourth season far sooner than they were renewed for a third last year.

let's be honest. it wasn't the critical praise. it had that after season 1. it was the uptick in ratings this year that got it renewed.

It's a tragi-comedy. I think most people going in thought YTW was a dark comedy. They do like ramming the darker emotional moments down our throats.

I get the feeling the series finale will include a murder-suicide the way it's going.
