EXCLUSIVE: As the CW is preparing to bid farewell to The Vampire Diaries, the network is eyeing a successor — another vampire drama based on a well-known property from a top TV creator. The CW has landed The Lost Boys, a series adaptation of the iconic 1987 Warner Bros horror comedy movie, from Veronica Mars and iZombie creator Rob Thomas, Gulfstream TV and Warner Bros Television. Written by Thomas, The Lost Boys series re-imagines the cult Joel Schumacher film, which starred Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, Jami Gertz, Corey Haim and Corey Feldman. Envisioned for a seven-season, anthology-style run, the series will tell a story spanning 70 years, each season chronicling a decade. Season 1 will be set in San Francisco during the Summer of Love, 1967. Each season, the humans, the setting, the antagonist and the story all change — only the vampires, our Lost Boys, who like the Peter Pan characters never grow up, remain the same. The project, which will explore what it really means to be immortal, is executive produced by Thomas via Spondoolie Productions, his frequent collaborators Danielle Stokdyk and Dan Etheridge as well as Gulfstream principals Mike Karz and Bill Bindley. It was Gulfstream’s idea to remake The Lost Boys into a TV series through the company’s overall deal with WBTV. Thomas, who also is under an overall deal at WBTV, came on board and came up with the new take on the movie that was pitched and landed at the CW in a competitive situation, with two networks pursuing. Gulfstream Television head Juliana Janes, who was instrumental in putting the project together, will oversee for the company. |

I loved the movie back in the day, but it has not aged well in my mind. I want to immediately discount this show, but I really like Thomas. Plus, I actually think the format of the show sounds kind of interesting. I might give it a shot. I guess I'll wait and see.

I just think that this one should not be visited. It's like the upcoming Crow movie (supposedly). What's next? Better Off Dead? |

I remember seeing this for the first time when I entered UC Santa Cruz to get my degree, so as you can imagine it was a lot of fun to watch. The movie is not a sacred cow, and it did have a few okay sequels...I would definitely be willing to give the new show a fighting chance.

Clearly CW's hope is that this can replace the Vampire Diaries, which is ending.

The original was a great movie.... which has already been tainted by awful DTV sequels. Bring it on! |

I have a lot of confidence in Rob Thomas, so I'll absolutely tune in. I can see this being really fun.

Being re-developed for the 2018-19 season No specific reason given. But sounds like The CW doesn't have any room in it's schedule to develop it for Fall 2017. |

Definitely seems like they're trying to fill the 'vampire' slot since TVD is ending and The Originals is unknown what is happening with it past this next season.
