RIP Jerry. The B5 curse lives on... Way too many of the cast have passed beyond the rim.

Now I'm really bummed out he didn't get a story in The Lost Tales.

Lots of the B5 cast dying relatively young. JMS statement on what is apparently Jerry's fan page?

(Don't see anything on JMS's FB page yet).

R.I.P.

Never really remembered him from anything else, but he was great on Babylon 5.

Yeah, when I read the news today it hit kinda hard. I've just watched Pat Tallman's video from earlier today with her reaction... damn, you can really tell the news hurts.

Think I'll make Bagna Cauda tonight.

Yeah, it's really eerie.

You look at the show's contemporaries like Star Trek TNG, Star Trek DS9, Star Trek Voyager, and X-Files, and all of the main cast are still alive.

Babylon 5 has lost five of its main cast, all relatively young. Doyle (60), Conaway (60), Katsulas (59), Biggs (44), O'Hare (60).

"I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe."

"Very sad life. Probably have very sad death. But, at least there is symmetry."

Re: Jerry Doyle (Babylon 5's Garibaldi and Conservative Talk Host) Passes Away

Man, I am shocked. And I'm not. This is the fifth death of someone in the main cast for Babylon 5, and, once again, I am deeply saddened by the premature loss of someone that meant a lot to me. None of the B5 Actors who have died made it past 60 (Richard Biggs only made it to 44). I couldn't believe the alert I received on my phone about an e-mail update from Babylon 5 Books about Jerry's passing, but at the same time it just seemed like just one more...

I've been a huge fan of Babylon 5 ever since I saw JMS (J. Michael Straczynski for the uninitiated) give a presentation on his upcoming TV Movie/Pilot/Series at a Star Trek convention in San Diego back around 1991 or so. He showed concept art, explained the premise, and gave an outstanding presentation that sold me on the series before a second of it ever aired.

I loved the cast, and Jerry was one of my favorites. He had the ability to be serious and mischievous at the same time. He had a great sense of humor that carried over to Garibaldi, and JMS (as he did with the entire cast) gave Garibaldi characteristics that played to the strengths of Jerry Dole. He even took a few things that Jerry said off screen and put them in the show as dialogue for Garibaldi. I loved Garibaldi, and I loved Jerry's performances in the role.

I had the chance to listen to Jerry's radio show a few times, and he was good at that, too. He was a very smart guy who always had an opinion on just about everything.

Here's what Joe Straczynski wrote today about Jerry...

There is a line in Babylon 5 where his character, Michael Garibaldi, suggests that the way to deal with crime is to go from electric chairs to electric bleachers. That line is quintessential Jerry Doyle. I say this with confidence because I overheard him saying it at lunch then stole it for the show.

Despite our differences, when Jerry ran for congress as a Republican not long after Babylon 5 ended, I donated to his campaign. Not because I agreed with him, but because I respected him; because there was one area in which we agreed: the vital intersection between the arts of acting and storytelling. In that respect, Jerry was a consummate professional. Regardless of whatever was going on in his life, whether it was marital issues, a broken arm, forced couch-surfing with Bruce and Andreas or other problems, he never once pulled a prima donna on us; he showed up every day on time, knew his lines, and insisted that the guest cast live up to the standards of the main cast, to the point of roughing up one guest star who showed up not knowing his lines. Trust me when I say that after Jerry got done with him, every day he showed up, he knew his lines. And then some.

He was funny, and dangerous, and loyal, and a prankster, and a pain in the ass; he was gentle and cynical and hardened and insightful and sometimes as dense as a picket fence...and his passing is a profound loss to everyone who knew him, especially those of us who fought beside him in the trenches of Babylon 5. It is another loss in a string of losses that I cannot understand. Of the main cast, we have lost Richard Biggs, Michael O'Hare, Andreas Katsulas, Jeff Conaway, and now Jerry Doyle, and I'm goddamned tired of it.

So dear sweet universe, if you are paying attention in the vastness of interstellar space, take a moment from plotting the trajectory of comets and designing new DNA in farflung cosmos, and spare a thought for those who you have plucked so untimely from our ranks...and knock it off for a while.

Because this isn't fair.

And Jerry Doyle would be the first person to tell you that. Right before he put a fist in your face. Which is what I imagine he's doing right now, on the other side of the veil.

J. Michael Straczynski
Executive Producer
Babylon 5
Jerry will be missed. And JMS is right - it's time for the universe to knock it off and leave the B5 actors alone for a while.

Very sad to hear. Babylon 5 remains my favorite science fiction show of all time, followed by ST:TOS and The Twilight Zone. Garibaldi made it from Pilot to Final Episode, the only human character to do so. He made that part his own slice of awesomeness. RIP.

2016 continues to suck.

I used to listen to Jerry's show driving home from work...he was really far right, but he was entertaining.

So sad. It's time to dig out my Babylon 5 DVD sets and watch it again. I taped the whole series + the movies on VHS when it aired. I have watched this series multiple times and it just doesn't get old. Loved the character of Garibaldi. He will be missed.

So many of the actors have passed away even the guy who played the doctor. I think he died in his forties.

Yep, Richard Biggs was just 44 when he died. 4 years younger than me. And he was a really nice guy from all that I've ever heard or read.

Jerry was only 60, and from my perspective that's still kind of, almost young. Certainly way too young to die. He was one hell of an entertaining guy. He always had something to say and even if you disagreed with him he was still entertaining and through provoking.

He reminded me of Bruce Willis a little bit.

What did he die of - have they said?

Not yet. They said it could take a few weeks to determine cause of death.

I just re-started B5 tonight with the first regular episode, "Midnight on the Firing Line." Very good episode, and a big step up from The Gathering. It really set the tone for the series. And we got to see Garibaldi's second favorite thing in the universe...

I just ran across this on YouTube, and it is the perfect tribute to Jerry - and the last minute is amazing. Try not to tear up at the end...

All the characters were good, but Garibaldi was a bit above the rest. I was rewatching it a while back, only got into season 2, and there were already great moments

He was snubbed at the Emmy "In Memoriam" and I can't help but wonder if that's because he was a well-known right-winger.

No, just not famous enough, and associated with a sci-fi series.

They snubbed Andreas Katsulas, too, IIRC.

Has a cause of death been determined? It's sure taken a while.

autopsyfiles.org doesn't have a copy of his autopsy report, but a TMZ report states it was announced as "natural causes with chronic alcoholism contributing."

I heard they left out Larry Drake (LA Law) as well...even more unforgivable...especially when they include athletes and singers in it.
