Halt and Catch Fire (AMC) -- Season 3 Thread -- Mutiny rising on Aug 23, 2016!

Finally! A date!
http://www.vox.com/2016/6/30/1206252...miere-date-amc

What are you doing this summer?

Did you answer "Watching the first two seasons of AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire, in preparation for the third season to debut on Tuesday, August 23!"? Because if you didn’t, you’re wrong.

Yes, Vox’s favorite drama about the '80s tech boom and the people whose lives it changed received an unlikely season three renewal, and now we’ve exclusively learned season three premieres on, as previously mentioned, Tuesday, August 23.

Here, we’ll say that again. Tuesday, August 23.

The season premiere will run for two hours and air at 9 pm Eastern on AMC. After that, episodes will run weekly on Tuesdays at 10 pm Eastern. The season three order is for 10 episodes total, which will air over nine weeks.
Tuesday seems like a terrible day, but I'm in. So in. I'm going to binge-watch Seasons 1 & 2 again.

Looks like there aren't too many folks who care about this show.
I rewatched all of S1 and S2 in the last couple months. Still a fan. :D
I wouldn't expect this to get a 4th season, unless S3 really takes off...

 Yeah you totally overestimated the excitement for this show in this forum, especially starting this thread almost 2 months early with zero reaction.

Just like AMC's other show Turn: Washington's Spies, this isn't the kind of show that generates much water cooler/heavy discussion buzz.

I keep thinking this show was already cancelled, so I get all excited when I hear it's coming back

Can't wait!

I don't know why Season 3 wasn't broadcast during the summer? This is the perfect summer show when there is nothing on to watch, as it's not a great show, but a very good show with great characters.

Hopefully they pull a Bobby Ewing on Dallas and pretend Gordon's 'memory loss' plot point didn't happen last year.

I'm hoping the Netflix effect results in better viewership for season 3. Agree, it'll feel a bit odd watching this show in October - used to watching in the summer months.

I figured it just got lost in the shuffle, but the new clips were reason enough for a bump :)

Anyway, glad to see a few people are into it. This isn't a show that needs a thread for every episode, that's for sure. From the clips, it seems like this season might have a lighter tone overall. The Duck Hunt references made me smile.

Yeah, as a member of the Vic-20/Tandy/Atari600XL generation, I'm looking forward to it and will watch it no matter how crazy it gets.

The first episode of season 3 will actually be shown tonight on AMC at 11pm. The guide shows a two hour episode of Talking Dead, but the second half must actually be HACF. Also, the 1st and 2nd episodes of season 3 are being shown Tuesday but show up as repeats in my DVR guide.

Thanks for that head's up windom, I caught it last night, pretty good starter, I hope they start to split things up between software and hardware, that what they want to achieve needs more capable hardware and what that leads to.

I brought the TI/994A computer with most of the other components at Sears back in the day. After they had a huge clearance sale on everything. I also can't get enough of this show.

I can't remember if I dropped this mid season 2 or not. Could someone give a quick recap of how it ended?

Joe stole Gordon's anti-virus design, and everybody else in the Mutiny storyline (with Gordon in tow) headed off to Silicon Valley.

Really good start to Season 3. You can see they feel comfortable with the characters now so they were able to get the season going without doing the usual reintroductions.

And I have to admit Kerry Bische is my new celebrity crush.

I watched part of last night's episode, never having seen the show. Couldn't really get into it, but it's probably not a good jumping on point.

I cut my teeth on a Commodore 64 and 1541 floppy disc drive, so this might be right up my alley.

One thing, though, was the talk about viruses and security last night. If this is taking place in the early 80s, then viruses weren't really a concern back then, were they? Most of the home PCs had their operating systems on ROMs, and the computer would return to the same state every time it was turned on. Very few people even went online with their old 300 baud modems, so that probably wasn't an issue either. I don't think there was much online back then except for some BBSes and early versions of AOL and Compuserve. And everything was proprietary back then, so a virus couldn't be passed from a VIC-20 to an Apple ][.

I'm pretty sure this episode was 1986. But yeah, I was only using BBSes at the time on my Apple 2. I don't ever remember being worried about viruses. I suppose there were dangerous warez out there that could be downloaded.

SEASON THREE OF AMC'S CRITCALLY ACCLAIMED DRAMA "HALT AND CATCH FIRE" DEBUTS WITH A TWO-HOUR PREMIERE EVENT ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 23 AT 9:00 P.M. ET/PT

In the third season, which picks up in March 1986, Mutiny leaves Texas for the big leagues of Silicon Valley. Founders Cameron Howe (Mackenzie Davis) and Donna Clark (Kerry Bishé) search for the idea that will launch Mutiny as a player, but new collaborators test their partnership. Gordon (Scoot McNairy) struggles to find a place within his wife's company as Joe McMillan (Lee Pace) builds upon his empire, reinventing himself with a bold play that shocks the Valley and sends him back into the lives of his old partners. In addition to Pace, McNairy, Bishé, Davis and Toby Huss as John Bosworth, the third season features Annabeth Gish as Diane Gould, a seasoned Silicon Valley venture capitalist, and Manish Dayal as Ryan Ray, a talented and ambitious programmer, in recurring roles.

From AMC Studios, "Halt and Catch Fire" captures the rise of the PC era in the 1980s, focused on four main characters attempting to innovate against the changing backdrop of technology. The series was created by showrunners Cantwell and Rogers and is executive produced by Cantwell, Rogers and Gran Via Productions' Mark Johnson ("Breaking Bad," "Rectify," Diner, Rain Man) and Melissa Bernstein ("Breaking Bad," "Rectify").

I bought my Commodore 64 in the summer of 1986. I just remember copying over 100 games that first weekend through my friends, as I never bought one game for that system. You just needed a box of double sided floppy disks, and you were good to go. I guess this is what put them out of business?

No. If anything the rampant piracy helped Commodore sell hardware. I think the 64 was the best selling computer of the 80s.

What killed them was their success with the 64. None of the new 8-bit computers Commodore made that followed the 64 caught on. The Plus/4 bombed, and the 128 saw some popularity but only because it was backwards compatible with the 64; even then there was very little native 128 software available. It still used the same audio and video chips from the 64, so there were very few games available for it despite having twice the RAM and a marginally faster processor.

The Amiga, Commodore's answer to the Mac, saw a bit of success, but by the time Microsoft came up with a usable Windows for the IBM PC architecture in the early 90s, everything had shifted over to Windows and an army of IBM clones.

What's the skinny on this show?

Good, interesting, funny , drama?

In a reduced nutshell, it's a serious, low key, Silicon Valley set in the 80's. Give it a shot.

Re: Halt and Catch Fire (AMC) -- Season 3 Thread -- Mutiny rising on Aug 23, 2016!

Yeah that's a pretty apt description of it.

Thought this was another good episode, there's only 8 more episodes so I wonder how they will force the convergence of an unsecure Mutiny and MacMillan Utilities solving or exposing the flaw in their security.

As long as Gordon doesn't stay with the Sisyphean character arc, I'll keep immensely enjoying this show.
