Some shows start and finish quick as each episode is riveting. This show ain't one of them. Amazing to think this will only be the 5th episode. It's like pulling teeth with this show and the only joy is the relief when it's over. I will watch until he end of the season just in the hope that at some point it might start getting back on track, but if it hasn't by seasons end then I am out for good.

Deleted last weeks ep without watching, sounds like this one is a skip as well. Guess I will let them stack on DVR from here on out in case I hear they are worth watching.

I'd be happy if they stayed in Ratwater. That show seems much more interesting than the regular story. That said this was probably my favorite episode they have produced so far. Not great but better than whats come before it.

As a comic reader, I find it jarring just how much Tulip and Jesse are off-model.

Cassidy is pretty close to the source material, but Jesse is just wrong. It's disconcerting watching him try to be an actual preacher, he doesn't have his badass swagger, and he comes off sinister and creepy. Tulip is too vindictive and capable of violence.

They could have changed the title of the show, given the characters and locations new names, and, outside of an Irish vampire and a guy with an anus for a mouth, it would be unrecognizable.

So, it doesn't sound like anyone is happy with the show. Readers of the comic don't think it's a great adaptation with alot of miscastings, and people unfamiliar with the comic are just confused and bored.

Sounds like I should delete this from the DVR.

Re: Preacher (S1E05) -- "South Will Rise Again" -- 6/26/16

Haven't seen this episode yet, but as of last ep, despite the weak bits, I still think it has potential. The world and characters of the comic are strong enough to support a good show even if plot, style and pacing are not followed exactly.

I get the feeling this reason this show is so stagnant is due to budget issues. Action/adventure is expensive, but horror/suspense/thriller can be done on effectively with cheap lighting/camera/sound work.

I wanted to enjoy that part, but what was going on made no sense. What was in the vial?

Medicine for his sick wife and kid.

Yep, and presumably he may have been able to save them had he chose not to go back to the town.

I thought breaking up The Saint's origin was kind of a mistake. I had to stop and think about the meaning of the vial myself (and having to recall it's connection to the first flashback), and I know the story from the comics. It would have more impact told as one piece, but I imagine they wanted to introduce the character (probably for readers, since it means nothing to newbies) and then dole him out in pieces to keep him "active" in the story, since they're probably not going to bring him in until the end of the season.

Re: Preacher (S1E05) -- "South Will Rise Again" -- 6/26/16

I guess they are hoping that when they finally reveal what the vial is for, people actually remember the few other minutes the character got in previous episodes.

There seems to be so much potential with this show, thut they keep blowing it based on how they are choosing to tell the story. Well that and some really stupid casting decisions (Fugly, can't act Tulip!)

Re: Preacher (S1E05) -- "South Will Rise Again" -- 6/26/16

I actually think the show is beginning to round into shape after a rocky start. I don't think they've managed the narrative particularly well, I would imagine half the audience is in the dark on the angels. They got way too cute trying to obliquely introduce each character.

This is one of those shows that should play better in binges if you can make it through the first few episodes.

While I don't think this Jesse Custer is much like the comic book character, it's a more reliable character to be a show's backbone for the long run.

Re: Preacher (S1E05) -- "South Will Rise Again" -- 6/26/16

I like it in general.
Definitely lost on about half of this episode though, including the old west guy (The Saint?)
And with Quincannon's last scene....I assume there's a reason but it didn't make sense at the time.
If it's only ten episodes, i'll definitely watch the rest of them unless the next one truly truly sucks.

But I can definitely see it being better as a binge.

Jesse's power is that people have to do what he tells them when he uses the word. The command "Serve God" is pretty vague, and up to interpretation of the person receiving it. The Westboro Baptist Church believes that they are serving God, for example.

Agree. I think this episode was better than most but still there were signs of the same problems. I struggled to remember why the cowboy dude was going to that house. I remembered the caravan family, but It had been so long since we last saw him (three episodes ago) and given there is still no connection to the main story, his minute at the house was a lost memory and I had no idea where he was going until I thought about it a bit. But by then the potential moment of impact had passed. As you mention, being too cute with trickling out information might hold the comic readers but it just bores and confuses things for others.

I'm enjoying the show for what it is. There isn't anything else on TV like it.

I agree, the Ratwater stuff is more interesting than the rest of the show.

Renewed for season 2. Will get 13 episodes: http://heroichollywood.com/amc-renew...cher-season-2/

Hopefully it gets better before season 2 if they want to keep a lot of the viewers around.

I told my friend that this was renewed. His response: "Hopefully the actors weren't."

Surprising. I'll keep recording the rest of the season and wait and see what the consensus is before moving forward.

It was always going to be renewed for a second season. The big decision is if it comes back for a season three.
