When I saw "The End" I was like WTF... no, this can't be. What a slap in the face to all of us fans.

FUCK YOU JOHN LOGAN
Regardless, Dreadful was the only reason I had my Showtime via Hulu. Now it's time to cancel.

I can't believe that was the last episode. For whatever reason, I thought that this show was already picked up for another season. I found it especially odd when I saw "the end." I figured maybe it was the end of the Vanessa chapter.
I can't believe the show is over. If it weren't the series finale, I probably wouldn't complain too much. Seeing as it is, however, I do think this season was a bit of a waste aside from the Vanessa storyline. I just don't feel like too much happened. The Western detour was all right but felt like more of a distraction. The Frankenstein and Jekyll story went nowhere. The bride and Dorian got pretty bothersome and added nothing. Timothy Dalton was given almost nothing to do.
These things could have easily been overlooked if their stories were ongoing. As it is, it feels like a big missed opportunity.

Re: Penny Dreadful (Showtime) -- Season 3 Thread -- 5/1/16
Very, very disappointing.
I find it difficult to believe that this is way Logan intended to end the series.
Everything about Penny Dreadful has been a slow burn with lots of build-up. Even as late as the early third season, they were building up this battle for Vanessa's soul (who was a reincarnation of Amunet?) between Dracula and Lucifer. That, along with all of this Lupus Dei business was just cast aside so Vanessa could be killed off. And Ethan's struggle with whis dark side was resolved so quickly that his whole arc this season made little sense.
Never mind that Lily, Dorian, and Victor's story went nowhere. Dr. Jekyll brought nothing to the story; his "cure" was never used and he never turned into Mr. Hyde except by earning his father's title. Completely useless character. For the resolution to Lily's arc, it would have happened the same way without him there. Lily's army of angry prostitutes just fizzled out as well.
Dracula got away and Lucifer is still out there.
We spent most of the series building up to some kind of apocalyptic battle between the light and the darkness with Vanessa Ives at the center, and she's just killed off with little fanfare?
Seriously?
It almost feels like the axe was dropped midway during production, when Hecate and Rusk were killed off suddenly in order to get them out of the way.
Such a shame to kill this show in this manner. The acting, design, art direction, and writing were top-notch for most of its brief run.
I'll be cancelling Showtime. There's nothing on I give two shits about now. And I'm not going to subsidize crap like Homeland, Ray Donovan, and Billions after they pull this shit.

Re: Penny Dreadful (Showtime) -- Season 3 Thread -- 5/1/16
I loved the show and i didn't mind the ending, but i do agree that it seemed rushed. This show has always taken its time and by the end it seemed to rush to the finish line and not give the time to flesh each story line strand to full effect. I still loved the series, but it did seem that Vanessa gave in too easily and characters such as Dorian, Dracula and the Monster did not end satisfyingly. Hell, Dr. Jekyll went nowhere and could have been a great addition. Another season could have really helped to end it properly.
I do wonder if low viewing figures put this to pasture. Its a shame as it was such a quality show.

Can we get the thread title changed to something like, "oops... now The Final Season"?

Sir Malcolm and Chandler were talking at the end and Malcolm talks of an adventure in India. It almost seems like thats where the show was headed and it never panned out. Re-shot stuff, slapped a horrible ending and called it a day.

Yeah, that was a really unsatisfying and rushed ending. I get the idea that Vanessa feels that she would never stop being hunted, but she came to that conclusion pretty damned quickly and without the audience really seeing or feeling it. Hell, she wasn't even around for most of the last 2 episodes (was she in #8 at all?).
I greatly respect the right of creators to end their own shows on their terms and actually like series that are not intended to be open ended, but after a pretty good run, this ending was a let down. Not just for Vanessa but for all the characters,
I guess when you're out of ideas that excite you, it shows.

Did they change the vampires halfway through the series? I recall in the first few episodes that some of them had thick black exoskeletons like a beetle?

For a show that isn't getting a 4th season I was satisfied with the way things wrapped, all things considered. No "to be continued" cliffhanger, or hint at a new story arc. Sure, perhaps a bit rushed over the final couple of eps but I feel enough closure to say farewell to these characters, and move on with my life.
Just a wonderful series - I will miss it...

Perhaps And I don't have a problem with Vanessa ending up as she did, I just found it hard to believe her frame of mind turned as quickly as it did in the final 2 episodes. It didn't feel as natural as I thought it should.

Perhaps when Showtime gets mass cancellations a lightbulb will go off in their collective heads and they'll decide to bring it back in some form.
The only way I'll be subscribed to Showtime now is if it happens to be bundled with another premium channel like Starz.

I call bullshit that it was planned out like that and it's sounding like they're just saving face from a canceled call and playing company men. Cause yeah, that seemed like if it was gearing itself up to be the last season, they wouldn't have had so many new loose ends being put out there and would have done a better job at the pacing as the last two episodes felt so rushed.

The person to blame here is creator John Logan, who in the end was the shows greatest strength and weakness. What he should've done is simply step down as showrunner and let another producer take the lead on the next arc. Instead he polarized the audience and proved detrimental to the shows legacy.
The emotional reaction to it's ending is gone for most and what's left is just frustration.

Yeah, started out fine but the ending sucked ass. Too many plots left wide open. Dorian's storyline, at least in the final shot, can be considered his destiny of always being alone in the end. Bride of Frankenstein left, all the other women/he killed, etc. Immortal hedonist achievement unlocked -- that's pretty much it.
It just ran out of steam, and like some already mentioned, John Logan insisted on being show front runner, I think he didn't write 2-4 episodes from the 3rd season, but everything else.
