Couldn't agree more. If you are enjoying Night Manager, those will be good too (though much more dated). Those two miniseries account for two of the four DVDs I've actually bought in my lifetime.

Pine was a soldier, then went to work in the hotel, and now he's being recruited into intellegence specifically for this one purpose, is my understanding.

Ok; that's kinda what I thought at the end. His meeting with the other soldier(?) is what confused me and made me think he was an agent the whole time. So he was just a basic hotel employee at the beginning of the show/story?

Pretty much, albeit one that purposefully seeming seeks out highly volatile places to work. He had previously worked with various agents, just not to a huge degree, and has a few connections.

I'm not saying. But so far the show hasn't said one way or another.

I must have totally missed it, but when in the episode did the 4 year time jump take place?

So when Pine met Roper that was already a 4 year jump?

Between Egypt and Switzerland. First scene at the new location/hotel was after the jump.

Okay, I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. Are you trying to say there is more to this story when just Pine being recruited to go against Roper?

I'm saying the British production of Tinker Tailor Solider Spy (not the movie) and Smiley's People after I, Claudius is simply the best mini-series ever.

In regard to The Night Manger I believe in watching to find out what happens and I would never post anything from the book.

Second episode was even better than the first. A little heard to follow at times, but far more going on. That was a hell of a beating to take for the cause!

Just watched episode 2. Answered a lot of questions I had from episode 1 so that was nice. This has made me realize how much I miss Laurie on TV. Bring back House!!

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is the best Cold War spy drama ever made. It will make you forget that Alec Guinness was ever Obi-Wan Kenobi. It came out on Blu-ray from Acorn Media.

The Night Manager has been riveting in its first three episodes. You can start seeing all the pieces slowly fall into place.

As a public service warning, Acorn Media Blu's are edited into 6 episodes. The BBC version is 7 episodes.

Interesting that there's not a lot of chatter about this miniseries. I thought it was very well-executed. Really enjoyed seeing how it wrapped up in the final episode.

Spoiler:
Honestly, I really thought at least one of the "good guys" was going to bite it before the end. I guess I'm glad they didn't go that route. Ended like a Bond film.

I thought it was fantastic, taut entertainment. A couple of the minor story-lines felt unnecessary, such as Jonathan's female handler being pregnant. I'll guess that the initial script was much more elaborate and that was a leftover strand.

This truly had some very powerful performances, including Hugh Laurie's sinister Mr. Roper.

She was actually pregnant. Great actress.

Loved this...will watch again on blu.

re: The Night Manager (BBC/Amazon) -- S: Hiddleston

I was half-convinced that
Spoiler:
through some set of circumstances the operation would be scuttled, the records of Pine's involvement would get obscured, and he would be left as an international fugitive—albeit one with several hundred million dollars he stole from Roper—accompanied by Jed, after Roper was killed somehow.
But I was very satisfied with the actual ending.

Were this an on-going series, no doubt they might have done that.

For those who liked this, I thought the miniseries "The Honourable Woman" had a similar vibe. International arms dealing, espionage, etc. The Night Manager edged it out (for me), but it's worth watching.

This mini-series is probably the best television show I've seen this year.

I guess 2016 is a weak year. However, for what it's worth, The Americans had a great season.

re: The Night Manager (BBC/Amazon) -- S: Hiddleston

Finished this up earlier this week, good series. Hugh Laurie was excellent as the villain, loved seeing him in that role.

About Tom Hiddleston...he was certainly good, and the role felt like an audition for Bond, which he's been rumored to be a favorite for. Based on this series, I think he'd be a good choice, but not a great one. He could certainly pull off the charming/suave/tuxedo wearing side of Bond, but the gritty/tough/cold blooded killer side of Bond wouldn't be as convincing...he's just too much of a nice guy with a baby face. I wouldn't be outraged if he got the role though, I'd be fine. The only perfect choice would have been mid 30's Clive Owen.

2016 has been a remarkably strong year with Fargo S2, American Crime Story, etc;

Night Manager was very good too.
