Re: KICKSTARTER: Bring Back MST3K - MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000

The initial $2M goal has now been hit. 25 more days to see about getting more than just the three new episodes.

The Turkey Day marathon is going to be on Yahoo Screen (last year it was on Youtube). I wonder if that points to what the new streaming home of the show will be? Joel was on Other Space, so there could be a relationship there.

I don't know. Yahoo lost a bunch of money on Other Space and the sixth season of Community. I could see them bowing out of producing or distributing original content.

I have a feeling once all is said and done, Netflix will be the one to pick up the rights for distribution. They already have an established history with Shout.

And I'm all for Jonah Ray hosting.

Re: KICKSTARTER: Bring Back MST3K - MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000

Felcia Day has been announced as the new Mad, Kinga Forrester. Hampton Yount and Baron Vaughn are the next voices of Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot, respectively.

The Kickstarter is also adding a bonus reward of downloads of 3 classic episodes to anyone who pledged $35 or more if they hit $2.75 million by noon on Thanksgiving. This is in addition to the 3 bonus classic episodes "unlocked" during the previous pledge challenge, so it'd bring it to a total of 6 classic episodes. They're at $2.67 million right now, so another $100,000 in two days seems feasible.

However, the big news is what might happen if they hit $3.3 million by midnight on Thanksgiving:

I don't want to get ahead of myself, so I'll tell you about that challenge in another update this week. Hardcore MSTies, I'll just give you a little hint: if you help us make the newest episodes of MST3K, you might just get to see the oldest episodes of MST3K.
The speculation is that he's referring to the KTMA episodes, which have never seen official release, and of which there's no public copies of the first 3 episodes.

Re: KICKSTARTER: Bring Back MST3K - MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000

Good news to hear it's coming back. It's one of my favorite shows.
I always thought Joel, Trace and Frank were the funniest together. Hopefully they'll be involved even if they aren't onscreen.

Re: KICKSTARTER: Bring Back MST3K - MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000

My guess is that it would just be the first three KTMA episodes to be released. Shout seems to have lost the Gamera rights, since the set of the Comedy Central versions is out of print.

Edit to add that the first three KTMAs seem to be movies Shout has the rights to.

I just can't get excited for this. If it were the cast I grew up with, then definitely (yes, I realize even the early casts changed). But let's face it, this is a reboot, and we all know how those turn out. Different voices for the bots, especially Servo, just turns me off.

Hope I'm proven wrong.

You mean like with Star Trek: The Next Generation? Or Doctor Who? Or Battlestar Galactica? Or Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey?

Re: KICKSTARTER: Bring Back MST3K - MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000

I'm in for $200, I don't see this reaching the 5.5 million, I think it will top out around 4ish million. The 4.4 million could happen, which would be great for the 3 more episodes, but I think we are getting 6.

I'm thinking that it's likely to reach the $3.3 million by the end of 11/26 goal, which leaves 2 more weeks of funding. Kickstarters tend to have a bell curve in terms of funding per day, with the bulk of funding happening right at the beginning and right at the end, especially once the 48 hour "remind me" notices go out.

So I'm thinking $4.4 million is pretty likely, with an outside chance of the $5.5 million. We'll see how much the promotion of it during the Turkey Day marathon affects pledging.

Re: KICKSTARTER: Bring Back MST3K - MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000

Joel posted an update saying downloads of 87 classic MST3K episodes will be $5 each today and tomorrow on mst3k.com, or $150 for 87 (which is probably how man episodes Shout has access to).

I think if they end up getting Amazon or Netflix involved, there will be more episodes. Or they'll use the six produced episodes as a gauge to see if the interest is there.

Ideally Netflix would be the best bet as if they pick up the rights to distribute, we'll get two seasons guaranteed.

The second Mad is Patton Oswalt as TV's Son of TV's Frank.

They just hit the 3.3 mark about 20 minutes ago, so we're at least getting 6 episodes. I think Patton will definitely help, the total has gone up like $4,000 since I started typing this reply.

Re: KICKSTARTER: Bring Back MST3K - MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000

I like the idea of them not using the older cast members. Aside from the fact that the show already has already had casting changes, fresh voices can make this more than just a nostalgia act. And the whole point of this is to show that MST3K is viable again, which means not just getting the existing fans on board, but also bringing in new fans.

I opted for the all digital donation level.

Re: KICKSTARTER: Bring Back MST3K - MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000

They've passed $4.2 million, and are pretty close to reaching $4.4 million, adding the "add-ons" to the Kickstarter total. If they hit $4.4 by early tomorrow, they'll give every backer a free Rifftrax episode:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...project_update

They have a lot of add-ons now:

Re: KICKSTARTER: Bring Back MST3K - MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000

I'm a little bummed that the Rifftrax download will just be a short. I hope we get to pick one of our choosing, I'm way behind in my shorts viewing.

The nice thing is you get it at any level, even $1. Since Rifftrax shorts are usually $1.99, that makes it a pretty good deal. I also think it would help this campaign a bit to boost its contributor numbers. The per backer average is impressive, but a higher number of contributors would help stress how many fans this show has to potential networks or streaming sites.

Re: KICKSTARTER: Bring Back MST3K - MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000

With about 60 hours left, the campaign has hit the $4.4 million level to unlock nine episodes. I'm forgetting the level (maybe $85) also now comes with downloads of 11 classic episodes.

Joel also announced the writing staff and guest writers, which includes all the on-screen personalities, Dan Harmon from Community, Dana Gould from The Simpsons, Rob Scrab and a bunch of others.

Pretty cool that the regular writers aren't big comedy names. I always appreciated how MST3K felt like a completely alternative comedy scene to the ones in LA, NY, Chicago, etc.

I wish I could have been one of those writers. I did some writing for a local riffing troupe, and I could be described as mundanely as they could!

One of the rewards lets you write for the show. As much as I would like to writer for the show, I would want it to be on its own merits, not because I shelled out a bunch of money.

It's interesting because it sounds like they're from all over, so with that and the guest writers, I'm wondering if a lot of the writing will be done remotely, or if they're planning on getting at least some of the writers into a room together.

The update mentions that guest writer Rob Schrab was "an original remote writer for MST3K," so it sounds like remote writing has always been part of MST3K, but I remember seeing a behind-the-scenes where the writers sat in a room together watching the movie and spouting off riffs. I suppose that could be done over the net now, like a Google Hangout.
