Wow. Way back in Season 3 (30 years ago!) when MST3K did a lot of Gamera movies (5), Gamera vs. Jiger was one of the few they skipped, so this is like them going back and filling in the gap.

Yeah, that'll be awesome to have all of the classic Gamera movies riffed.

Technically, they're still missing Gamera vs. Viras and Gamera: Super Monster. Apparently the 5 they originally riffed were what Sandy Frank released in the US with English dubs. Also, MST3K originally riffed those five in the KTMA season, before revisiting them in season 3.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamera...%E2%80%931980)
In 1985, the American distribution rights to the Gamera films were bought by producer Sandy Frank, who distributed five of the eight films with new English dubbing. In 1988 and 1989, Frank's versions of Gamera, the Giant Monster (simply re-titled Gamera),[17] Gamera vs. Barugon, Gamera vs. Gyaos (re-titled Gamera vs. Gaos), Gamera vs. Guiron, and Gamera vs. Zigra were each used in episodes of the television program Mystery Science Theater 3000, during the show's first season, which aired on KTMA-TV.
I thought it'd be fitting if Gamera vs. Jiger was one of the ones Joel hosted, since he hosted for the previous 5. However, if it's the premiere episode, I don't know if they'd put a Joel episode first.

Re: KICKSTARTER: Bring Back MST3K - MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000

I just watched the original Gamera episode (or, I guess the season 3 version) on Shout Factory TV. Some of those jokes do not play today haha. But I understand it was 30 years ago and Japan had a rather different relationship with the US.

Looking up "Gamera vs. Jiger" online, I stumbled across this rather well-made fan tribute to MST3K in which some fans riff that movie on their own SOL:

They’ve done two and are working on a third. I’m really impressed with what they’ve done.

Re: KICKSTARTER: Bring Back MST3K - MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000

On the Sklar Bros podcast, Jonah said that J Elvis Weinstein and Bill Corbett will be the voices of Joel’s Tom & Crow. There was speculation about that during the Kickstarter, but no announcement.https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas...=1000521261705

Jonah also said he would talk to Joel about getting episodes of Cheap Seats in the GizmoPlex, which would be cool. The Sklar Bros have recently been putting episodes up on their YouTube.

This is AMAZING! I started watching MST in the early 90s when I was 10 or 11, and to see it still popular 30 years later is mind blowing. These guys probably weren't even born yet.

"The Million Eyes of Sumuru" is a rare MST3K-redo because they riffed this movie way back in the "zeroth" season at KTMA. (I know RiffTrax frequently re-riffs movies from MST3K, but incarnations of MST3K only did this a few times, mainly the Gamera movies.)

The KTMA version is viewable here:
Spoiler:
MST3K K18 - "The Million Eyes of Sumuru"

(Lifted from a copy-of-a-copy of a VHS tape, so bad picture quality typical for most KTMA episodes)

They also redid the two Fugitive Alien movies, Mighty Jack, and Time of the Apes. So of the 21 KTMA season films, they previously redid 9 of them.

Yeah, MST3K Season 3 seemed to be the season of the re-do's. Sumuru is the first non-Japanese movie to get a re-do. (Honestly, I'm still surprised "The Green Slime" haven't gotten a re-do because it is a perfect target for later season style riffing.)

Yep. Got mine too. I wish they had their app set up though - the only way I can watch them on my TV is by using my Air Play option.

Re: KICKSTARTER: Bring Back MST3K - MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000

Has anyone tried to get the rifftrax bits?

I just got the second set of codes today.
The first set has a code for a free month of Rifftrax friends which I think is their streaming service?
Its not clear but you might have to sign up for that service to get the free month.

Im not interested in those extras if I have to sign up for another service. Maybe I just read it wrong but none of the codes work so I’m thinking I have to sign up.

For the Rifftrax codes, I received the following.
  • BONUS: RiffTrax Friends (1 Month)
  • BONUS: RiffTrax Short (Goldilocks and the Three Bears)
  • BONUS: RiffTrax "Just the Jokes" (The Wizard of Oz)
  • BONUS: RiffTrax Movie (Gammera the Invincible)
  • BONUS: RiffTrax Live (Giant Spider Invasion)
I was able to redeem the last 4 on my free Rifftrax account just fine. Note that the basic Rifftrax account is free, you just have to sign up, and this lets you purchase or redeem movies. You do have to be signed in to redeem the codes so they add the content to your account. The "Rifftrax Friends" service is an optional add-on subscription.

It does look like if you redeem the free month, you're going to be subscribed to the service, either annually or monthly:
Friends Subscription Notes:
  • If you already subscribe to Friends through a TV app (Roku, FireTV) you will want to cancel there through that app to avoid double-paying.
  • If you have NEVER subscribed to Friends before, enter the code when you subscribe through the Friends page here.
  • Existing subscribers, visit your Subscription page here and then click on "Invoices" to apply the Friends coupon to your current billing cycle!
  • If you are an existing subscriber via Roku, you can cancel from your Roku account page and re-subscribe via our Friends page the next month. For FireTV subscribers, you will want to stop auto-renewal here and then re-subscribe at RiffTrax.com/Friends.
  • Monthly subscribers will get their first monthly billing cycle FREE after the 7-day free trial.
  • Annual subscribers will have their first paid year prorated to $59 instead of $64.99 after the 7-day free trial. That's THREE free months instead of TWO!
So if you're new, you actually get a month + 7 days, since they still give you the free trial time. If you're interested in only the free month, the key would be to sign up, wait for the end of the 7-day trial for the promo to redeem, then cancel before the end of your first month.

Okay.
I did redeem those four free codes.
I think the free month thing confused me plus they sent two emails 5 days apart with the same codes so not sure why they did that.

The first email, they had posted the Rifftrax codes

The second email, they had posted the VHX codes for classic MST3K episodes.

The backerkit link stayed the same though in both emails, and the new codes were just added to the link.

Re: KICKSTARTER: Bring Back MST3K - MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000

The trailer is out for season 13, but if you've already seen the Santo episode, there's no new footage.

The big details:

The first three episodes will be available to non-backers starting May 6-8.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Season 13 Exclusive Trailer and Release Date Announcement - IGN

On the Kickstarter page they also announced that the Gizmoplex will have every classic MST3K episode they have the rights to stream (120 or so) available to stream for free, whether you have a membership or not.

Re: KICKSTARTER: Bring Back MST3K - MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000

Anyone been watching?
They have aired two season 13 eps as rough cut versions to just the backers.
Plus a Manos tribute show.

So far the Jonah and Bot segments have been just okay at best.

The Mads segments have been awful compared to even the Netflix seasons.

The new theme song is weak.
I’m not digging that Flat-O-Vision™️ Or whatever they’re calling it.

The more casual rate of the joke per minute is much better.

Gizmoplex members will have access to all the episodes that Mst3k has.

Don't forget the new short that premiered before the screening of Manos!

The next "tribute" screening has been postponed until after the 5/6 public launch of the site, so they can focus on getting the show/site/service ready for that. Odds seem likely that the next new episode preview on 4/29 will feature the newest host, Emily.

Personally, I've been fine with most of the changes. I don't mind the green-screen at all, maybe because I watch a lot of Youtube, but also, the show, with maybe the exception of the Netflix era, has always been low-rent on production values. Also, I don't mind the new theme-song lyrics, since they've always been expositional.

And maybe because I grew up in the 80s, but I LOVED the Jonah and Bots wrestling sketches, especially the one in the Santo episode.
