Smallville fans put in 10 seasons worth of corn fields and caves (and more caves, always a damn cave) and pretty much never got as much as Supergirl brings in what I'm guessing is the first few eps. It's not even fair to all the support characters in Smallville who had to endure something like 100+ concussions each so they never saw *the blur* slow down.

I understand why that was the case with Smallville but still. boooooooooo*

*I'll still watch of course

That "no flights, no tights" rule was the dumbest thing a show-runner could do. Why limit yourself from the very beginning about how far the character can develop?

i saw this when leaked and will watch again. i thought it was refreshing for this and Flash before it to start off with superhero full out. i liked Smallville, don't get me wrong, but it was one 10 year cock tease compared to these...

I'm curious, so I set the DVR since I'll be gone. Odd that it shows it will air from 8:31-9:31. What's up with that?

I ended up buying the full season at Vudu ($29.99). Other services like Amazon and iTunes have it for the same price.

I think it's also available on the CBS All Access streaming service ($6/mo). But I hear their video quality isn't very good, and it's full of commercials.

Only this week to take advantage of The Big Bang Theory as a lead in. Scorpion will be a special 90 minute episode after Supergirl. CBS's Thursday Night Football coverage ends after this Thursday, so The Big Bang Theory and Life in Pieces moves to Thursday night. Supergirl will be 8pm next week.

It's just a crappy network move to try to hook in more people.. I don't see how 1min is going to do that but maybe it really pays off with a rating boost if the lead in show is a monster hit like Big Bang.. Maybe it's a punishment for people who DVR, like "You should of watched it live if you wanted to see the ending!"..

Between the network logo "screen bugs", the never ending commercials and all the other strange junk network tv does I'm shocked we just keep watch. Yet we do..

DVR or online viewing is a must these days. Just too many shows on along with there being almost no way to watch stuff live.

It MAY have been okay when thinking of a four to five year run. However with everyone else flying around for years and not fighing it out until the last episode just made him look dumb. They should have tossed that out by season five.

I'm liking hese series that just get right to it. Also like not hiding their identities from everyone they care about. That is another thing that became really old on smallville. He would not tell anyone, they basically had to find out or for him to feel forced.

Anybody else watching this because of the recommendation from Jeb Bush.....

I may not trust him with the economy, but he seems capable of recognizing hot women and good TV. :)

For a pilot I thought it was OK. Looks like it might have some potential. Not much else is on Mondays so I'll give it at least a few more.

Thought it was a little lame in spots, but Benoist was likable, and the showrunners have a good track record for this sort of thing so I'll keep watching for awhile.

I didn't like Eggs in True Blood, and I don't like him as Jimmy Olson.

hanshotfirst1138 10-26-15 09:34 PM

Is there fan-coined name for the big flashpoint that they use to create villains of the week? In this is the Phantom Zone prison, in Flash it was the particle accelerator explosion, in Buffy it was the Hellmouth, in in Smallville it was the meteor shower, etc. The formula is pretty set in stone: a super-powered character or two who on missions while the underlings figure out technical stuff about how to beat the bad guy.

The Flash has moved on from particle accelerator metas and on to a better explanation :)

Goofy with just the right amount of fun. I am just glad they didn't try to make Supergirl dark where you need to see your therapist after watching it like DC tends to do with their films and Gotham.

DeadLamb 10-26-15 10:14 PM

Re: Supergirl (S1E01) -- "Pilot" -- 10/26/15

They really are going out of their way to never say "Superman".. They did say man of steel but everything else was always round about vague terms... him, big guy, your cousin x25+ times.
"This suit has the S, just like............. your cousin"

It's just a licensing issue but I still find stuff like that rather amusing..

other wise the ep was not that bad.. light sort of tone.. I wonder how the eps will be once they have to scale back the FX budget?

Re: Supergirl (S1E01) -- "Pilot" -- 10/26/15

Not saying Superman was really too much...

Pretty good pilot, but not quite on par with The Flash or first season of Arrow. Did like the main character, her boss, Jimmy Olson and the tech guy. Didn't really care for her sister or whole "we're gonna be fighting a horde of aliens" angle. I'll keep watching for now, but not sure if I'll stick. We'll see.

And why should it hurt anyone anyways. Glad other people brought this up as I saw a comment that Jeb Bush said she was hot and then saw a comment from a poster about how Bush probably got his from The Fappening. Didn't even remember she had her pictures hacked. May not like the Bush Family, but got to admit he's got good taste.

Re: Supergirl (S1E01) -- "Pilot" -- 10/26/15

I see no one here must have watched the leaked pilot. It had one big difference from the broadcast version I'll keep in spoilers because it affects one character's long-term possible role on the show.

Spoiler:

In the leaked pilot the most obvious difference is that Kara's generic white friend at the office is gay. They made him hetero for the broadcast version. I think they may have also toned down the potential romantic undertones between Kara and Jimmy via dialogue, but it's been a while since I saw the leaked pilot. It may seem minor but hints at the possible direction of future story lines.

The changes leave the door open for the friend with Kara, if the romantic chemistry between Jimmy and Kara doesn't work out. So they are paying attention to what happened between Iris and Barry on the Flash and general fan reaction.

I think the sister is a nice addition to the show and its formula. It probably would have been better if her secret government background had been revealed over a couple of episodes but you can't take anything slowly in today's network ratings climate.

The costume works for me and I am usually very tough on Hollywood costumes. Melissa definitely owns it when she's Supergirl, she struts around like an actual superhero. I've noticed that some women don't give off much presence when they cosplay as Supergirl, even when the costume looks perfect. Melissa gives off the perfect vibe I wanted to see as both Supergirl and Kara. She's a sweet, lovable dork but it's not the false persona of a bumbling Clark Kent.

I was very happy when we got the indestructible Silver Age cape.;)

I liked her in that first costume. Very sexy.

Was that Alex Ross's art on that painting that Olsen gave to Kara?

When in the leaked pilot is
Spoiler:
Kara's friend shown gay? The first scene he is in, he asks her out. She already had a date. Then on the roof, he thinks she's a lesbian due to her whole 'I have a secret' talk and says that's the reason she isn't into him.

Re: Supergirl (S1E01) -- "Pilot" -- 10/26/15

 I dug it. It was light and fun. Very impressed with the action and special FX. Let's see how future weeks go when they won't have as much money to spend. The plane sequence was pretty spectacular for a TV budget.

Melissa was great as Kara. She was cute, kind of a nerd, and showed some vulnerability and innocence. She was very believable in the costume.

I also liked Chyler Leigh as her sister. I agree the reveal with her being part of the DEO could have been revealed a little later on.

The twist at the end was kind of cool keeping Laura Benanti on the show as the evil aunt/twin sister of Kara's Mom.

One thing I noticed was how fast the plot moved. Very brisk pace and they didn't beat around the bush at all with her becoming Supergirl. I was surprised how much plot they fit into the 45 minutes.

I hope they bring back Dean Cain and Helen Slater again. Kind of sucked that she only had 1 line and Cain didn't speak. But, the Pilot was only 1 hour, not 2. They did mention Superman's name once. After that, it was just a lot of "Him" references.
