THE FLASH

"The Man Who Saved Central City" - (8:00-9:00:30 p.m. ET) (TV-PG, V) (HDTV)

BARRY DECIDES HE NEEDS TO PROTECT THE CITY ON HIS OWN - Picking up months after the Singularity attacked Central City, Barry (Grant Gustin) is still struggling to forgive himself for Eddie's death. Concerned about putting his friends in danger, Barry has pushed everyone away and has chosen to protect the city on his own. When a meta-human named Atom Smasher (guest star Adam Copeland) attacks the city, Iris (Candice Patton) tells Barry that he needs to let his friends help him protect the citizens of Central City. Meanwhile, Cisco (Carlos Valdes) helps Joe (Jesse L. Martin) with his Meta Task Force. Ralph Hemecker directed the episode with story by Greg Berlanti & Andrew Kreisberg and teleplay by Andrew Kreisberg & Gabrielle Stanton (#201). Original airdate 10/6/2015.

This is scheduled to 9:01 on my DVR. Really fucks up my recordings tonight. I had to set a manual recording to 9pm. Hopefully it is just a preview that gets cut off. Sunday and Tuesday are so stacked for me with shows.

I hope they get into Gideon's existence since she was introduced last season but never explained other than Barry created her.

Solid but uneven premier. The whole "I'm working alone" nonsense was pointless since it was resolved by the end of the episode. He also mentioned working alone in the intro. I guess we'll get more of an official intro next week.

Other than that goofiness, it was great. I'm still unsure how I feel about Henry taking off. It's nice that they resolved the "in jail" plot and didn't leave it dangling, but he coulda hung around a few episodes before declaring his presence hindering Barry's growth as the Flash. I'm fine with him leaving and his justification, it just seemed very rushed.

So I guess that's the last we'll see of Ronnie before Legends of Tomorrow?

Anybody else confused because Atom Smasher (Adam Copeland) looks so much like Clancy Brown, and I didn't know who Copeland was until I googled him after the ep.

Also. "Son, I've spent the last 15 years in prison, so I could not be a father to you, but now that I am out, I am getting away from you as quickly as I can." Nice.

WTH, Henry was in prison for 14+ years and couldn't stick around for 24 hours after getting out to spend some quality time with his son?
Talk about shittiest father award.

Nope, but then I recognized Copeland because he plays on Haven too...

Pretty sure it was confirmed during the summer that Ronnie wouldn't be on Legends either... It's just the old man.

No, but I kept thinking it was Brian Thompson (of X-files bounty hunter fame).

Copeland is Edge, former WWE Champion and Hall of Famer. He retired a couple of years ago because of neck injuries. I wish they had gone more into the origins of the Atom Smasher other than the cryptic Zoom reference. Atom Smasher was part of the Infinity Inc and the JSA in comics and was mostly portrayed as a good guy during the character's run.

I also agree that it was shitty the way Barry's father left after getting out of prison. I thought that he would stick around for a while and maybe show up later as alternate universe Flash. On the other hand, I liked that they are teasing Cisco's powers and loved the way they made fun at the lack of security at Star Labs and how Cisco mention where the idea for the Flash-Signal came about. Hoping now that things pick up with Jay Garrick showing up and that it leads to more classic characters appearing in the future.

Zoom went back in time and forced Barry's dad to leave. Zoom would have just killed the dad but he was feeling bad for him. You can't kill a guy that just got out of prison.

Yeah, he could still live in town. That was ridiculous leaving a few hours after getting out of jail. Screams, actor is off the show!

Any place to watch on line or do I have to wait 8 days? Had power outage during show.

It should be on the CW website and app tomorrow

It was a little strange having Henry freed and then him going off alone to leave Barry, but I trust this show enough that they will do something with that later in the season.

So the Flash is already popular in Central City and loved by everyone. I was thinking what Oliver would say to him about that considering the Arrow has been hunted by the police in Star City.

I think Hulu will have it as well.

This was a decent if entirely unsurprising premiere. The "We need teamwork" shtick was almost out of Power Rangers. It was fun, but in essence, we spent the hour putting everything back in place: everyone is back at STAR Labs in their old positions, there's a new Reverse Flash as the season's new Big Bad, even getting Henry out of jail just to have Shipp written off. Does Amell have other commitments or something? He's on for a few episodes at a time, when being Caitlin's finance and a superpowered heavy-hitter, you'd think he'd be on the team all the time. I imagine Stein won't be sticking around, but he's fun for now. Without Welles, they don't have someone who's super-knowledgable about everything, so I'm guessing there'll be lots of storylines about figuring out how to work without him this season. HOWEVER...

Jay Garrick. Fucking Jay Garrick, the Golden Age Flash, is on my $1,300 HDTV. Jay Garrick is on the CW. Ho. Ly. Fuck.

The "we need teamwork" or "I'm doing this alone" only to realize they can't has been such a played out trope that it really took me away from the first episode. Just wasn't needed, truth be told. And the fact that the dad bounces the moment he's out of jail simply to keep Barry Angst filled/motivated is just lame. I mean, wasn't the whole point of this episode to hammer home the message;

"You don't have to cut everyone you care about out of your life to be the Flash.... but then just added ...well, you could drop your dad because he's not quite a series regular and the budge needs some room for those FX shots and lightning isn't cheap, you know."

Until I see Jay pull off the tin hat, I'm not going to fan girl out just yet.

I bet this guy will be the hit of the season only to be killed off in the first episode of Season 3. He walked in like a complete badass.

Didn't really bother me too much that Henry decided to leave. Maybe he could have hung around a little longer, but he wasn't wrong for wanting to leave.

Central City was a place of a lot of pain for him. His wife was murdered and he spent the last 14 years in the slammer even though he was exonerated. I can't blame the guy for wanting to start over elsewhere. I'm sure we'll see Henry again down the road.

Robbie Amell said on his Facebook page that Firestorm will be back. Whether that means Ronnie isn't dead I have no idea. The character is going to Legends of Tomorrow, so he's coming back in some form.

Amell is on the new X-Files, so we aren't going to see him for awhile.

The reasoning seemed arbitrary but I think if the dad became a regular on the show it would wreck the pacing and the show would suffer. Every scene with him and Barry it's like when he needed a pep talk or to like shift gears before a big action sequence and if it happened twice an ep it'd be like Arrow season 1 with Tommy.

I figured Barry had to be abit angst ridden and melancholy after surviving a black whole so I didn't mind that at all. Overall it was enjoyable. Barry and Iris still have negative chemistry but I don't think that's gonna change lol.

True, we certainly don't need a Jonathan Kent regurgitating the same bullshit every episode.

I'm fine with him leaving, it was just handled poorly.

Maybe his dad has some shit to do. It was a quick exit, but it doesn't bother me.

I am more interested in Jay and how Wells comes back into play.

Bit uneven but I trust the show runners. Looking forward to this season. Definitely can't wait to see how the Multiverse works into this.

Having Henry leave suddenly was awkward but fine. They should have just boiled it down to "Barry. I've been in prison for 15 years. I need to get my shit together and find myself. See you mid-season when I'm revealed as the big bad for Season 2."
