Re: HBO orders Watchmen series from Damon Lindelof

A little confused after seeing the trailer, is this a retelling of Watchmen, a prequel to the graphic novels or a sequel? Not much of it looks familiar plot-wise (although, it's been years since I read the books).

Sequel, dated years after the original. Dr Manhattan lives on Mars. As that picture above indicates, Jeremy Irons is a much old Ozymandias.

It's set in the Watchmen universe, whatever that means. It looks like HBO wanted Watchmen's name recognition when dipping their toes into superhero fare.

Cool. I can dig that. The movie was mostly forgettable.

There was a movie?

If anything, I took that quick shot of squid raining down from above as an implicit message that this Watchmen has nothing to do with the film adaptation.

I'd actually get HBO Now or whatever it's called to watch this.

Watchmen + Lindelof =

Why does this equation keep appearing in my dreams?

They are, for whatever reason, reluctant to call it a "sequel," preferring terms like "remix," but, unless they do something dramatic, it looks like this is going to be a sequel set in the current era, putting it about three decades after the events of the original story.

And there also a few things that lead me to believe this will be a sequel to the comic book series and not the 2009 film. Folks who are familiar with both will know what I'm talking about..

Damon Lindelof tells Alan Moore "F***K You!".
Moore always comes off as a bitter old crank.

Moore does sound cranky at times, but he usually makes excellent points in regards to the medium, and is more principled than some of his peers.

Lindelof comes across just as slimy to Alan Moore as DC has been.

And yet he repeatedly named dropped Alan Moore in his 5-part Instagram essay which promoted the upcoming HBO Watchmen series, and knowingly creates click-bait quotes for journalists to run with like "Fuck you [Alan Moore], I'm doing it anyway!"

Moore is cranky because DC exploited a loophole in Moore's contract to retain Watchmen's rights when they originally told him all rights would revert back after one year. Watchmen is the number one selling graphic novel of all time.

I thought the stipulation would be that the rights would revert back once it went out of print.
Not only that, but he and David Lloyd brought their previously creator-owned project V for Vendetta they did in the UK to DC under under the same premise. DC owns that now too.
Then DC tried to screw Alan Moore out of Watchmen merchandise profits at the time of the comic series, even though he was owed a percentage. They came back by saying the merchandise was "promotional material."

After he left DC and refused to work for them he clicked up with Jim Lee in the late 90s to start the ABC Comics line under Lee's Wildstorm company. Then a little later Jim Lee sold Wildstorm to DC without telling Moore. At that point, it's Moore's fault for not insisting on co-ownership of the ABC properties, but the way Lee handled it didn't come across as being on the up and up. So now DC owns Promethea, Top 10, and Tom Strong.

The actual quote is not click-baity at all. He says:

"I do feel like the spirit of Alan Moore is a punk rock spirit, a rebellious spirit, and that if you would tell Alan Moore, a teenage Moore in ’85 or ’86, “You’re not allowed to do this because Superman’s creator or Swamp Thing’s creator doesn’t want you to do it,” he would say, “Fuck you, I’m doing it anyway.” So I’m channeling the spirit of Alan Moore to tell Alan Moore, “Fuck you, I’m doing it anyway.”

Cutting it down and just saying he tells Alan Moore "fuck you" is misleading.

1. Alan Moore was 32 years old in 1985, not a teenager.

2. It's misleading for Lindelof to claim that Alan Moore would have said "Fuck you, I'm doing it anyways" to Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, and to Swamp Thing creator Len Wein, especially considering that the latter was his editor at the time and the guy who got him his job at DC Comics.

3. Lindelof actually followed up "Fuck you, I'm doing it anyways!" with...

He knows what he's doing, using Alan Moore's name and the controversy to promote his TV series. This is the headline that Entertainment Weekly ran with "Damon Lindelof to Watchmen creator Alan Moore: 'F--- you, I'm doing it anyway."

Robert Redford is apparently going to appear as the president in this. Cool.

First "The Boys" and now this. I may have to reevaluate my "I hate stupid shows based on stupid comic books" position.

And yes, a college roommate loaned me "Watchmen", I did read it, and I still thought it was stupid.

But this show looks pretty great.

If you didn't like the book (which is considered to be one of the best graphic novels ever written) I really don't see how you're going to like this.

But since this has nothing to do with Alan Moore, who knows?

The presence of Lindelof first gave me reservations. Now what I have heard the villain is "white supremacy" I am very skeptical. I'm a pretty big liberal but don't like it when they try SJW crap in entertainment mediums just to try and score points with groups.

Comics have always been this way.
