Good point. I didn't think of that, but since that was part of Barry's storyline, it didn't really intersect with the stuff going on with Adam and his (maternal) grandfather anyway.

Still loving this show.

Although, has anyone noticed that the writers aren't always accurate about when certain things happened in the 80s? Just wondering.

I'm totally ok with that.. as well

A christmas story came out in 1983, and it was on no ones radar until the 90's at best when TBS got there Mitts on it and started the 24 hour marathon..

Just stop you guys. It's a sitcom not some BBC period piece.

Not totally correct. It came out on VHS (with rental pricing around $50 wholesale) around 1986 or 1987. Every Christmas season all copies at Blockbuster Video (and presumably most video stores) would be rented out. I also note it aired on HBO in 1985. How many viewers saw it is unknown.

Re: The Goldbergs (ABC) -- Season 3 Thread -- Premieres 9/23/15

And as for the historical accuracy of Barry and Adam being fans of A Christmas Story, it's not impossible; I went to college in Goldbergs era, and I remember one buddy of mine being a huge fan of the movie. It was indeed a box office flop, but I think it found its audience in video rentals and maybe TV airings. So the fact that Barry and Adam watch it on TV makes sense; had they been depicted running to the theater to see it, I'd have called shenanigans too.

Re: The Goldbergs (ABC) -- Season 3 Thread -- Premieres 9/23/15

You guys missed a huge flaw in the timeline of this episode. Murray was reading in the newspaper about the Ryne Sanberg/Larry Bowa trade which happened on January 27, 1982. This happened while they were watching A Christmas Story in the next room which came out in 1983 and over a month after Christmas anyway! Plus Adam's Revenge of the Jedi shirt (which I doubt anyone could buy in the '80s) and the mention of John Lovitz as Hanukkah Harry which first appeared on SNL on December 16, 1989. The only explanation is that Murray was reading a nearly 8 year old newspaper!

It's no wonder this show doesn't get any Golden Globe nominations.

When I watch The Goldbergs, I usually try to guess which plot line or aspect will be revealed to be as the one from Adam Goldberg's actual childhood. I got this one totally wrong. I thought it was gonna be Ball Ball, in particular the styrofoam cup trophy.

I watched the Hanukkah episode earlier and loved it. Pops shaming Beverly with the songs and gifts was hilarious.

Re: The Goldbergs (ABC) -- Season 3 Thread -- Premieres 9/23/15

Looks like we haven't discussed this show since the end of 2015. Too bad as I felt it was really strong in spring, and that was probably my favorite sitcom season finale this year (unless Fresh off the Boat tops it next week, which is not impossible). Sure, there were a few clunkers like Erica suddenly realizing she has a crush on Geoff Schwartz, but overall it was great. They've set up a lot for next year, with Beverly planning on getting her teaching certificate (there's gonna be a lot to mine with that premise), but also really acknowledging Adam growing up. That's great for the writers, as they'll no longer have to write around Sean Giambrone's voice and appearance.

But above all, Dave Kim just kills it anytime he's on screen. Hell, I'm not even gonna acknowledge that it's actually an actor, Kenny Ridwan. No, to me, he's just Dave Kim.

Yeah, this season was stellar. The show is still hysterical. Definitely my favorite sitcom of the past three years.

I guess ABC has some faith in the show since it will be the lead off show on Wednesdays next season.

Barry has emerged as the real card of the bunch. Every goofy thing he says cracks me up. It's exaggerated but I see so much of my mother in the things Beverly does. My mother was very overprotective and not afraid to show it.

The Middle is starting to lose steam but still enjoy most episodes. These are my favorite two shows on TV right now.
