A 2 episode season?
Good grief, and people think the UK is smart for having short seasons.
Just call it a new 2 hour Luther TV movie.

‘Luther’ Returns to BBC America in 2015
The Luther/Alice relationship is gold. No mention if she'll be in the new episodes, and Ruth Wilson is currently appearing in Showtime's The Affair. Both shows have limited filming demands, so it's possible she could appear. Here's hoping.

Re: Luther Season 3 -- Fall 2013 (BBC America)
I actually wasn't a fan of them ending up together. The fact they're two very different people with very different ways of relating to the law was part of the charm. Putting them together as a legit couple felt awkward to me. I like the relationship, I just don't like them together as a couple. She's better as a kind of "Hawk" to Luther's Spencer for Hire. I did kind of get why, if they weren't coming back, they wanted to end that way. Happy Endings and all. We'll see what they come up with.
Alice has to be one of the best female "bad guys" of all time. She has some of that Hannibal Lecter vibe to her.

BBC America also offers a tease about the two-part miniseries continuation of the Emmy-nominated, London-set crime drama: “Luther’s back. Pitted against his most chilling adversary yet, haunted by the ghosts of his past and hell-bent on retribution, he’s drawn into a terrifyingly complex case that pushes him closer to the edge than he’s ever been.”
Written and created by Neil Cross and directed by Sam Miller (No Good Deed) the Luther special will also star Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey), Laura Haddock (Guardians of the Galaxy), Darren Boyd (Fortitude, Spy), John Heffernan (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell) and Patrick Malahide (Game of Thrones), with Michael Smiley and Dermot Crowley returning as Benny Silver and DSU Martin Schenk respectively.

Re: Luther -- Season 4 -- BBC America
BBC America currently airs endless repeats in primetime during the week, so I don't know why the programming department felt like it needed to cram both episodes into one night, from 9pm until midnight, no less.
Why not air Part 1 on Dec. 17 and Part 2 on Dec. 18 from 9-10:30pm? I guess they don't really care and figure most people will either DVR the three-hour block or watch On Demand.

Re: Luther -- Season 4 -- BBC America
Just finished watching seasons 1 and 2 again over the weekend.
I guess Idris and the creator were not happy with S3, and this is an effort to make up for it.
Ruth is probably too busy now working on The Affair. I do wonder what happens when Idris/Ruth etc sign up for this show and then end up being quite successful, how do they keep them contracted.. Especially given the fragmented nature of BBC's series releases.

Re: Luther -- Season 4 -- BBC America
Premieres tonight on BBC America:
Golden Globe(R) winner Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation, Star Trek Beyond) returns to his iconic role as a self-destructive near-genius detective on the edge of law enforcement. Detective Chief Inspector John Luther (Elba) will learn the hard way; he may never be able to walk away from capturing the tormented psychopaths that lurk the streets of London. His attempt to leave the darker side of humanity behind for a chance at a "normal" life is quickly thwarted when he's drawn into a terrifyingly complex case. A cannibalistic serial killer delivers a devastating blow that not only pulls him out of seclusion but pushes him closer to the edge than he's ever been. A BBC AMERICA co-production, the gripping, psychological thriller Luther makes its highly-anticipated return in a one-night special event on Thursday, December 17, 9:00pm ET.

It was definitely better than last seasons. They got back to what made the show great in the 1st place. I definitely missed Alice but this new chick seems interesting.

Eh... kinda disappointing to me. It was fine, really... but only TWO EPISODES though? It kinda felt like episode 1 and episode 6 of season 1. I know seasons 2 & 3 were "only" 4 episodes, but they seemed much more fleshed out. With this season, I felt like I missed a couple episodes (that don't actually exist).

I dont like that it seems like they're trying to replace Alice with this new woman.

I read an interview with Idris Elba and he made a point of saying, "The show is called Luther, not Alice." I remembered thinking I'd love to have heard his tone of voice when he said that.

I hope she's not off for good. Two episodes is better than no episodes... but I really wish they had more time to put in a bit more meat into the show.

As much as Idris Elba likes the character Luther, I think there's an opportunity cost at this point to doing it. He's not getting paid big bucks to play Luther because the production can't afford it. He can head up Hollywood productions and make a lot more money. He really wants to transition the Luther to theatrical movies. It's somewhat like Benedict Cumberbatch and the BBC's Sherlock. They feel some connection to the character and show, but they are in demand for other higher-paying things.

The BBC has no money. They're announced earlier this year they are cutting 1,000 jobs through 2017.
as ^^ Mikah said, I'm guessing Idris is making the time to play the character because of some loyalty to the creators, crew, and fans. But he's obviously not doing it to get paid. There's much bigger pay days for him in the States.

Sort of. Basically as long as he's an executive producer, he's getting a significant salary. If he was just an actor that point would be more valid. Alice is a perfect example of explaining her absence.
