Sesame Street moves to HBO

http://deadline.com/2015/08/sesame-w...ip-1201498572/

This deal is brought to you by the letters HBO: In a pact between Time Warner’s premium cable network and Sesame Workshop, the next five seasons of Sesame Street will be available beginning this fall on HBO and its multiplex channels, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and the new internet-only SVOD service HBO NOW. After a nine-month window, the show will be available free of charge to PBS and its member stations.

I guess this will settle the question about which HBO show has the most nudity.

F--- Game of Thrones. I'm subscribing to HBO just so I can avoid those day-after Sesame Street spoilers!

Seems like an odd move. Besides outdated actor cameos, I don't think my kids can distinguish first-run Sesame Street from reruns from a few seasons ago. I know I can't.

Not to mention the fact that half the show is repeating segments from previous shows. Pretty much only the main storyline and a few skits are new each time.

Maybe they can reboot The Electric Company while they're at it. Sorry...am I showing my age?

When you control Bill Simmons, Cookie Monster and the Khaleesi, what else is there?

I wish HBO got the rights back for Inside the NFL.

It has gone to shit on Showtime.

Haven't seen Sesame Street in years. Do they have commercials at the front and back end like a lot of PBS shows do now? If so, this is a good move.

It's a good fit. Long before GoT was killing off beloved characters, Sesame Street killed off Mr. Hooper.

It's the seemingly innocuous moves like this that are causing traditional cable companies to crap their pants. As more and more content shifts to streaming outlets like Netflix -- and HBO is trying hard to become one with HBO Go -- it becomes that much easier to cut the cord.

Plus, it's about time we got the Count and Cookie Monster uncensored. You have to know those two bastards can sling some expletives with the best of them.

Spoiler:
Mr. Hooper.

Put that crap in spoiler tags, geez.

Wonder if this is also a move to keep PBS publically funded ... one argument has been about their need for tax funds when they rake in cash from the SS brand.

fujishig 08-13-15 07:32 PM

Re: Sesame Street moves to HBO

The article I read said that with this deal, their funding issues are basically solved (they were suffering because of declining DVD sales) and they don't need the 10% funding from PBS anymore. Also they're increasing the number of episodes per season and creating a spin off show for HBO.

The article in the OP says that they already rebooted the Electric Company some years ago (and I do remember seeing an episode with my kids a few years back, though it lacked Spider-man so I wasn't impressed), and HBO also bought those rights:

In addition to Sesame Street, HBO will license approximately 50 past episodes of the two acclaimed children’s series Pinky Dinky Doo, an animated series for preschoolers that focuses on early literacy, and The Electric Company, which was rebooted in 2009, from Sesame Workshop.

I assume Picture Pages will not be rebooted.

Re: Sesame Street moves to HBO

The format of Sesame Street would lend itself very well to a continuous 24-hour channel, just showing segments forever with new ones thrown in as they're ready. I'd pay for that if they mixed in plenty of the old ones. (There's still some stuff missing that wasn't in the "Old School" DVD sets.) Ditto for The Electric Company. Shout Factory was too lazy to chapter those DVDs properly.

Screw the Electric Company. Bring back Square One TV and get the guys who do True Detective to write Mathnet.

HBO puts up the main segment of Last Week Tonight each week, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them do something similar with Sesame Street.

If they're paying for exclusivity of six months, I would be surprised if they did that.
