Re: Vinyl (S1E03) -- "Whispered Secrets" -- 2/28/16

Shit, and I thought last week's episode was my favorite - but this one just upped it. The Alice Cooper actor was great - sounded just like him. Devon is obviously getting swindled and it was good to see the OG Hedwig and the Angry Inch (John Cameron Mitchell) play Andy Warhol.

I'll be sticking around for the long haul.

I wasn't crazy about the first 2 episodes, but I definitely liked this one. Alice Cooper fucking with that dude was awesome.

I'm not super into this but the soundtrack more than makes up for some of the plot deficiencies.

Re: Vinyl (S1E03) -- "Whispered Secrets" -- 2/28/16

I'm having a really hard time with the portrayal of the punk scene in this show. It's 1973, and there's a British lead singer of a punk band, that has a packed crowd going crazy to their song??? That is not how punk started at all.

Also, the song they play is a Dead Boys song, so that's confusing when you have real life bands like the Dolls playing in the world of the show. I know I shouldn't be surprised that they're playing fast and loose with the history of punk rock, but it just feels dumb, and not interesting, and I think the origins of punk rock is very interesting.

And the fact of the matter is that no major label came close to touching a punk rock band until - what 1976, with the first Ramones album? I mean hell, the Nasty Bits is supposed to be based on Richard Hell and the Voidoids and they didn't form until 1976.

Re: Vinyl (S1E03) -- "Whispered Secrets" -- 2/28/16

I liked the episode, especially the Alice Cooper parts (that actor nailed Alice!) but agree with the above post regarding how the punk scene is being handled. A British guy fronting a NYC punk band playing Dead Boys type songs in 1973 just doesn't seem right at all. The Nasty Bits are supposed to be based on Richard Hell and the Voidoids? Geez, I didn't know that, they should have had a band based on early Television (maybe even the Neon Boys), and without a Brit singer.

Re: Vinyl (S1E03) -- "Whispered Secrets" -- 2/28/16

The problem with this show is that it doesnt really want to be an origin show about punk, new wave or a new sound in the early mid 70s, its just using that music scene as an excuse to drive more of a t winters / scorcese drama piece...

Unfortunately maybe he and scorcese needed to breathe a bit after boardwalk empire and let the ideas germinate a bit more.

I would have preferred a cool origination story about any punk band or the nyc cbgb scene in the early 70s.

But that aint what we got with this show, we've got bobby cannavale chewing scenery dropping time with some fictional characters and some non fictional characters doing some unsavory things in a very realistic nyc looking set.

The alice cooper stuff was great, more of that would be welcome.

I'll keep watching but bummed this isnt a better show.

Re: Vinyl (S1E03) -- "Whispered Secrets" -- 2/28/16

I didn't really enjoy it much. Yeah, the Alice Cooper stuff was AMAZING. Very fun. Liked the punk show, though it laid it on the old cliches a little thick (rapturous, hypnotized crowd 15 seconds into a punk song they've never heard before from an unknown band, one week after they were mercilessly booed).

The domestic stuff is absolutely awful and the murder stuff is even worse. You're supposed to (I think) have sympathy for Richie, but I have no idea why since he seems like 1) a terrible person, 2) a terrible husband and father, 3) an awful boss and 4) at least a slipping music producer. On what front are you supposed to be admiring him? As a cocaine addict? The better "Difficult Men" shows gave you some rooting interest - Tony Soprano was trying to get ahead in the mob, Walter White was trying to get some security for his family, Don Draper was damned great at his job. Even Nucky Thompson had a vision of greater things for Atlantic City (as well as himself). The only entry point for Richie Finestra is that he kind of likes music and has a good ear. Not enough for me to be emotionally invested in this show. Especially with a murder cover-up hanging in the balance.

BTW : I went to a Rock Concert at Wembley Stadium in 1991. Rod Stewart was the headliner, but before he came on, Status Quo played. They seemed hugely popular among the Brits there but I had never heard of them. It was really weird to have an act so big there that I'd never even heard of stateside. Hadn't thought of them since until Richie cut them from his label.

Vinyl (S1E04) -- "The Racket" -- 3/6/16

In lieu of attending a funeral, Richie (Bobby Cannavale) takes out his anxieties on a couch during a marriage-counseling session with Devon (Olivia Wilde). Later, over the course of a chaotic day at the office, Richie courts funk superstar Hannibal (Daniel J. Watts), agrees to let Robert Goulet (Matt Bogart) record an original song on his upcoming Christmas LP, and gets fired up after an acrimonious meeting with Lester (Ato Essandoh). Meanwhile, Zak (Ray Romano) and Scott (P.J. Byrne) ruminate on their futures in the aftermath of the lost deal with German Polygram.

On the verge of signing with American Century, Kip (James Jagger) and the Nasty Bits enlist a new manager to work out a favorable deal with Richie. Armed with photos from Richie's temper tantrum, Devon visits a divorce attorney. Skip (J.C. MacKenzie) looks to unload an overrun of bootleg albums, but finds no takers. As he's about to be detained by two new detectives, Richie learns from Cece (Susan Heyward) that Hannibal is being courted backstage by Jackie Jervis (Ken Marino), and orders his assistant to do whatever it takes to keep the singer in the stable. Later, Richie visits a downtown jazz club in search of an alibi, while Devon has a meltdown at home.

Written by Debora Cahn; directed by S.J. Clarkson.

Re: Vinyl (S1E04) -- "The Racket" -- 3/6/16

No comments but Yikes in the episode thread on Tuesday night? Looks like most folks are already out on this show.

The first half of this episode with the hustling in the office was pretty fun. That's what this show needs to be -- a workplace drama, Mad Men for the Music Biz. The domestic stuff and the murder investigation parts aren't working at all.

BTW : "Money" and "Baba O'Reilly" in the same episode must have cost a fortune. Seems like they could have sprung for a bit of Zep in the Pilot, right?

I've understood it's not a cash thing for clearance rights of Zeppelin songs, they just won't allow it on principle. Unless Jack Black makes a personal appeal.

Which is why, if you watch Wayne's World on cable or DVD, the "No Stairway to Heaven" gag makes no sense. Apparently it was like pulling teeth just to get Zepplin to approve the first few notes of the song just for theatrical release.

I like the show. I was amused that they managed to get Politicians In My Eyes by Death in the show.

I'm not sure why the show has a real life band - New York Dolls, Alice Cooper - and then has Hannibal (which I assume is supposed to be Sly Stone?). Strange that they decided to go back and forth between the two conventions.

I was going to ask who Hannibal was based on.

It would have been sweet if they got Will Ferrell to play Robert Goulet.

Vinyl (S1E05) -- "He in Racist Fire" -- 3/13/16

Richie (Bobby Cannavale) visits a close relative in order to leverage a favor to his advantage. Devon (Olivia Wilde) agrees to join Richie for dinner with Hannibal (Daniel J. Watts) and Cece (Susan Heyward), playing up the vixen role to keep one of her husband's biggest clients signed.

Kip (James Jagger) faces a tough dilemma in the wake of the Nasty Bits' recent signing: fire one of his bandmates or lose a prime gig opening for the New York Dolls. Desperate to shore up PR at American Century, Richie tries to recruit Andrea Zito (Annie Parisse), a former employee and flame who now works for Jackie Jervis (Ken Marino). Clark (Jack Quaid) gets a new job after an emotional meeting with Julie (Max Casella), while an indignant Jamie (Juno Temple) ends up keeping her old one. Richie has an inspiration for the name of his new label.

Written by Adam Rapp; directed by Peter Sollett.

I liked this episode enough. Robert Goulet was funny. I also liked the funk band - sounded great on my sound system.

I watched, tuning in for the Vibe and music more than the story.

Richie is pretty unlikable to root for on any level.

He's a spaz but has moments of brilliance and his humor and outbursts crack me up. I hate Mick Jagger's son, though. What a tosser.

Good to see Juno nekkid.

Of course we see Juno naked, she's literally naked in every thing she's ever done isn't she.(and I LOVE her for it each and every time).

I watched and love this show. I could do without the Buck Rogers plot line however. I think it would have been better to just allow Buck Rogers and Richie fight it out in the business.

Olivia Wilde is smoking hot.

And a nice shout out to the great Lou Reed. Glad Richie has a new partner. Ray Romano and those clowns are a bore.

Re: Vinyl (S1E05) -- "He in Racist Fire" -- 3/13/16

This was probably the best episode after the pilot.

Maybe it is me but this is better than the OJ FX series which is probably 20 pages long in this forum.

Not sure if I am going to like Andrea Zito and that Jersey accent might get annoying.

I remember "Pillow Talk" by Sylvia Robinson when Devon was dancing was also used in Carlitos Way when Pacino was looking at Penelope Ann Miller dancing.
