Have to say, the ending of the subterranean bit seemed a bit telegraphed.

as disjointed and confusing as this season has been, I think I'd be ok with the other 2 dying and the bad guys winning.

At least we finally got some closure on who killed Stan.

Man, out of the dozens of possible exits from the tunnels, good thing that guy was waiting at the right one, and at the right time (or bad thing for Paul).

Should have stayed in Texas Forever, brah.

Still don't give a shit about anything going on here.

This is when Why So Blue calls us haters. What a god awful season.

Maybe because I've only been paying 80% attention the last few episode, but who was the black dude he met with underground? And the shooter at the end looked familiar, was he someone we've seen before?

That was James Frain. He's usually a bad guy in stuff he's in. He plays Ray's Lieutenant.

Poor Paul. Wasn't surprised by the end result. He was getting away way too easily. But yeah, the shooter just happened to be at the right exit was  I guess there's no point for his fiance and Mom to appear in the finale.

Very Frank-heavy episode. I guess he's cashing in all chips and getting the hell out of dodge. But, did he really need to become an arsonist as well? ;)

Ani and Ray's drinking/intimate scene at the end felt very forced and dragged. That was probably the extra 6 minutes to the running time.

With their handler now dead, I can't see this ending good for Ani or Ray.

I'll be glad when this is over after next week. I can't see myself ever re-visiting this season. I think sales of the BD will probably suck as the only ones buying it will be people who don't have HBO and never saw it and didn't pirate it. Even the people who pirated the show probably dropped it. ;)

This season isn't an unwatchable turd IMO as JackSkeleton constantly says it is and bashes it every week, but it's definitely disappointing. Vaughn IMO has shown he is capable of doing drama in spots and I've enjoyed Farrell playing Ray. But, Pizzolatto's scripts haven't done them justice. As I said before, if he decides he wants to do a 3rd season, he really needs to hire a writing staff with some known TV writers to help him out plotting the next arc.

That wasn't the first time we've seen the shooter. He was Velcoro's Lieutenant, he's been in several episodes. And, I'm guessing Semyon burned down the casino and club in the most obvious way so they couldn't get the insurance money.

Oh crap, you're right that was Lieutenant Burris. I do recall him now.

I thought with the last 2 episodes we would be heading towards a decent finish to an overall disappointing season but this episode was pretty bad. Looks like they'll limp to the finish line here.

Couldn't get myself to care at all about Paul getting killed. I did nothing but roll my eyes when they tried to hit you with the emotional hammer and show his pregnant girlfriend at the end. It wasn't surprising that he would get killed either. Not only was there the ominous phone call to Ray but the cut to Ray and Ani telling us how important Woodraugh was to their own safety at the point sealed the deal.

So basic gist of the story I got is that every city official in Vinci is corrupt and they all like to seal shady deals at hooker parties run by the mob. Our 3 heroes and their handler uncovered all the shit and are now being pegged off one by one. I wouldn't be surprised to see the bad guys win out in the end. It might actually be the best possible conclusion.

The way it is going it looks like Vince Vaughn's character Frank is going to be the one that wins.

Agreed, the material here is actually pretty solid and tightened up it could have made a great season. As it stands, there's a bit too much sprawl and the lack of focus means a lot of the plot points fall flat. There's also the try-hard moments (isn't this so dark and moody bar with moody live music and scar faced bar tender, etc.) and made-for-TV grade level convenient plot points and execution (someone waiting for Paul at a random exit from "tunnels that run all over the city", that horribly filmed shootout in episode 4, easy escape from the sex party, etc. etc. etc.)

With a bit of restraint this could have been a much better season.

That said, the Frank stuff has really picked up the last few episodes and I'm actually excited to see where that goes, which is a first this season.

he is also the crow who kicked off the season, his name may have appeared on the crime report woodrough was reading, and also a guy who would probably make a really good Mister Mxyzptlk on the Arrow spinoff.

i could not tell if woodrough exited the hall of justice basement and why there were homeless people there. if it wasn't, that makes it more preposterous lieutenant crow knew where to wait. someone drove the crowmobile away, so who else is involved.

ani and ray will get out alive, head to San Francisco and prosper in dry goods. their love is strong and pure. as is ray's coke.

i thought semyon burned everything down so the russians would not get bupkis

i miss the singer from the dive bar. maybe she was sleeping on the floor as woodrough passed and i blinked.

The last shot of the episode should've been a shot of her singing in the bar... while on fire.

Could someone explain what the hell is going on?
I think I have a general idea, but I'm not sure.

Is it basically a conspiracy between bad guys(who run prostitutes and drugs), politicians, black mountain, and some corrupt cops?

And the bad guys plan was to kill casper, take his money and screw vince vaughns character, and continue doing business, but when the police got involved they had to use their partners(black mountain, corrupt cops, politicians) to keep them from investigating?

And they had to hire some police to investigate because it became known, so they hired three misfit cops to the case. But they ended up being better and more resourceful then everyone thought.

is that what happened?
If that's the story then it's kind of neat, but they way the told it is so freaking confusing.

Still dont know:
Who cut open Casper's eyes? Who was the bird man that shot colin ferrel? Why was he wearing a bird mask? Why did military use flashlights when going after someone in a darkened sewer, do they not own nightvision goggles? Or realize that it would give away their position.

From what I understand, the fat cop who was part of the initial investigation team and died in the huge shootout was involved with a diamond heist/double murder 20 years earlier, then the kid (kids?) of the murdered diamond dealers tried to blackmail the cop about the diamonds and Casper about his kinky sex stuff. Then Casper was diemed a liability and whacked, and I think the fat cop was trying to get the 3 main chars killed in the shootout, but was double crossed and killed himself. I think the crow character was part of the kinky sex stuff, and was there trying to recover Casper's "party videos," although why he was in that getup instead of a ski mask seems silly, like a lot of other things.

OK, I'm caught up.

Seems like the Russian oligarch is in cahoots with the Vinci mayor's son, without the mayor's knowledge. This group conspired in a hostile takeover of Vince Vaughn's empire, legal and extra-legal.

It does seem that two Vinci cops staged a jewel heist in 1992. Those would be the Chief, (the black cop who was killed or took a beat down in the tunnel), and the fat, lazy cop who took a head shot during the raid on the meth lab. With this money, they "bought in" to the corrupt Vinci underworld and got richer. Still not sure how the Vinci LT figures in, though it's clear he's as corrupt as the rest, or how the orphan girls got mixed up with the bad guys.

It seems the linkage between the Russians and the Vinci PD is tenuous at best at this point, with the only linkage being hooker parties in Monterrey. Of course we'll probably find that both groups are connected, as it seems the Vinci LT could likely be wired in with the Russians, and is the presumptive candidate for the murder of the Weekend at Bernie's guy who kicked this whole thing off.
