Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll (FX) - Series Thread - created by and starring Denis Leary

Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, created by and starring Denis Leary, will air on FX on Thursdays at 10 PM e/p, beginning July 16. Leary stars as "Johnny Rock," lead singer of a legendary early 90s New York band called The Heathens. Known for living up to their name, the band partied so long and so hard that even Keith Richards thought they needed to slow things down. The Heathens were on the brink of becoming famous for their kickass live shows and the release of their highly anticipated first album. Until they broke up. The same day the album dropped. Because lead guitarist Flash (John Corbett) found Johnny in bed with his wife. So the band became legendary for all the wrong reasons - like self-destructing sooner than any group in rock 'n' roll history. 25 years later the only thing bigger than Johnny's ego is his prostate. The drugs he really needs now aren't cocaine and marijuana - they're Crestor, Cymbalta and Cialis. He's out of work, out of money and out of show business options. That's when a massively talented young singer named Gigi (Elizabeth Gillies) shows up - with a burning desire to be famous, a throwback appreciation for The Heathens only album, and a stack of cash big enough to bring the whole band back into the studio. Only this time, SHE'S the lead singer and Johnny's just a behind the scenes songwriter. John Ales, Bobby Kelly and Elaine Hendrix round out the rest of this dysfunctional rock and roll family. The race is on to see who gets famous first - and for what reason. Leary serves as Executive Producer along with Jim Serpico. Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll is produced by FX Productions and Fox 21 Television Studios.

The 1st trailer was posted today. Not sure how many of you heard about this show. Thought I would go ahead and post this since there is footage out and most of you watched Leary on Rescue Me.

I'll check it out, but my first thought is too bad Peter Tolan isn't invlolved (Leary's co-creator on The Job and Rescue Me).

I was wondering whatever happened to John Corbett.

this doesn't sound good. on the fence on if i will watch. one hand, it is on FX, which is good. on the other hand, it is Leary, who ran Rescue Me into the ground. that show was unwatchable at the end.

I really enjoyed this. Big Afghan Whigs fan so it was fun seeing Greg Dulli and having them be a plot point. Lots of music references in this show, which I enjoyed.

The bickering about his daughter's vagina was reminiscent of Rescue Me-ish banter.

I'm in.

I liked it too. Pretty darn funny, original concept. "Or David Bowie's dad." In.

I guess it was watchable, though I had flashbacks to the latter seasons of Rescue Me which devolved into humorless comedy and drama. I probably won't follow it, I've seen enough parodies of the aging rock star scene.

I've always found it interesting how movies and TV fail so badly at capturing the music industry. I'm sure most of that comes from growing up in the 80s, and the Tim Cappello "hardcore punk rock guy... playing the damn saxophone" in Lost Boys, or "punk rock is whatever the costume department thinks it is" in Valley Girl era. But shows about fake musicians always seem so... fake to me. The band looked like 50 year-olds in the "1990" footage, the song was lamer than lame, and the drug references just smacked of trying too hard. I didn't love the premiere, but it had enough funny moments for me to watch another episode.

Yeah, I feel like it's easier to do something like Spinal Tap, where the songs are parodies than it is to create something that legitimately could have been a hit.

Weird thing about the music is that it is so not "rock & roll", and she is certainly in no way a rock singer. Not even close. I'm not making any sort of judgement on the music about whether or not it's good. I'm just saying it's not rock, like they're telling us it is.

Sure, except... have you heard what passes as "Rock" today?

I keep seeing the ads for this on FXX which I honestly find a bit irritating but the concept sounds kind of interesting. Might check it out.

Anybody watching this? Just got caught up on the first 3 episodes, and so far I'm really liking it. Seems like they're all having fun with this, and it shows. And the Joan Jett part was pretty funny.

I think it's great. Leary's funny, and so are the rest of his band. And after seeing Gillies a million times on "Victorious" (my daughter used to love that show), it's pretty weird to hear and see her in this one.

Except if the story about Jackie Fuchs is true, then Joan Jett is a horrible human being.

Too too long won't read.

The show is losing me.
Kinda boring. The music is not rock and isn't good pop.

The daughter looks weird.
Did her eyebrows fall out and they needed to paint them on.
Her stuff with JOhn Corbett is creepy and so is her talking to her dad about the bikini and other sex stuff.

That love song to her dad at the end of the last episode was eye rolling bad.

Jackie Fuchs was a shy schoolgirl who, by a stroke of luck, became "Jackie Fox" of The Runaways. Their manager, Kim Fowley (a guy) was into really creepy sex stuff, especially girls as young as 13.. According to the article, one night Fowley got 16 year-old Fuchs really high on pills and raped her in a hotel room in front of an audience, which included Joan Jett and Cherie Currie. Jett and Currie apparently sat there and did nothing. Jett's story over the years has gone from "that didn't happen at all" to "it wasn't quite like that" to "I wasn't there" to "I don't remember" and back again.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed the eyebrows, they distract me. They look strange to me, like they're too close together or something.

Yeah, I know it's nitpicking, but you think they'd be able to fix them.

Season finale was the other night. I thought the season was ok - a little light on all parts of Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll. It was entertaining enough to watch a season 2 if it gets renewed.

First season was average at best. I was expecting it to be canceled. Looks like Leary has some pull at FX though. Looks like it pulled in decent enough ratings as well.
