Press release, plot spoilers ahoy:

Exploding with epic and thrilling adventures, Doctor Who returns to BBC AMERICA on Saturday, September 19 in the new season of the hit show.

The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) is joined by Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) for time travel on a cinematic scale. Having the time of their lives, the pair meet new and old monsters, and go on a journey that takes them to deadly alien planets, creepy underwater bases, Vikings villages, a global Zygon uprising, and leads them through hidden alien dens, to the very end of time itself.

Meeting monsters old and new the Doctor will come face to face with Missy (Michelle Gomez), a city of Daleks, deadly mercenaries called the Mire, terrifying ghosts and more.

Having filmed in Cardiff since January, Peter Capaldi said:

“Soaring through all of time and space, series nine sees the Doctor throw himself into life with a new hunger for adventure. The Cosmos is there for the taking, thrilling, epic and enticing, and his to play in. But he’s almost reckless in his abandon. It’s almost like he’s running from something, something that if it ever catches him will turn his life upside down.”

Previously announced and taking up a guest role in the new season will be young new talent Maisie Williams, having already achieved global success for her role as Arya Stark in the fantasy drama series Game of Thrones. Michelle Gomez (Missy) returns to plague the Doctor and Clara in the season opener, and UNIT are back with Jemma Redgrave and Ingrid Oliver (Osgood) returning to season nine following their popular entrance in season eight. Also confirmed as guest cast in the new series are Rebecca Front, Rufus Hound, Paul Kaye, Joivan Wade and Sophie Stone.

The show’s ninth season has been written by lead writer Steven Moffat, Toby Whithouse, Jamie Mathieson, Peter Harness, Mark Gatiss, and new writers to Doctor Who – Sarah Dollard and Catherine Tregenna; directed by Hettie Macdonald, Daniel O’Hara, Ed Bazalgette, Daniel Nettheim, Justin Molotnikov, Rachel Talalay; and produced by Tracie Simpson, Derek Ritchie, Nikki Wilson and Peter Bennett.

The star-studded cast continue to shoot in Roath Lock studios, Cardiff Bay, Wales, having filmed in Tenerife, and South Wales locations, Caerwent, Caerphilly Castle, Cardiff Castle, St Athans and Margam Park.

The last season of Doctor Who was BBC AMERICA’S highest rated season ever on the channel and season eight is available now on BBC AMERICA On Demand and all digital platforms, as well as on Blu-Ray/DVD.

Doctor Who is a BBC Cymru Wales production for BBC One, co-produced with BBC AMERICA.

The last line of that press release is interesting:

Doctor Who is a BBC Cymru Wales production for BBC One, co-produced with BBC AMERICA.

BBC America co-produced a few episodes in the past (the two-part S6 premiere comes to mind), but based on that line, it looks like BBC America is now co-producing the series as a whole (perhaps due to the budget problems at the BBC in the UK).

I wonder who Maisie Williams is playing...

Lots of speculation that she's going to be someone from the Doctor's past we've already met like River Song, Jenny ("The Doctor's Daughter"), Romana, or Susan Foreman (the Doctor's granddaughter).

Knowing Moffat, after all of the secrecy, suspense, and build-up she'll just end up being a one-off character.

You didn't catch the last line of the trailer?

Spoiler:

What's the matter Doctor, don't recognize me?"

Also, opening of the trailer Clara (Jenna Coleman) is in an orange spacesuit; ending of the trailer Clara, maybe (Maisie Williams) is an orange spacesuit.

That's not the last line of the trailer. The last line is:

Spoiler:

"What took you so long, old man?"

Oh oops. But it's still implied by her line who she could be playing.

Like every other series of Doctor Who, I can't wait! I couldn't get into the Who panel in Hall H because I wasn't insane enough to get in line.

Last season really killed the zeal I had for this show. That trailer got me interested again though.

I enjoyed last season. I was glad Matt Smith was finally gone.

Anyone going to see this in the theater (Sept 15th/16th)?

Doctor Who: Dark Water/Death in Heaven in 3D

(with an exclusive series 9 prequel scene)

Don't think it's playing around me, but I'd skip it even if was because it fucking sucked. A shitty end to a shitty season.

Prequel to the first episode, apparently called just "New Series Prologue"

There's another prequel minisode called "The Doctor's Meditation" that BBCA is scheduled to air at 10pm ET on Fri 9/18. My DVR picked it up automatically, but you might want to check yours. I believe this will be the first minisode to actually air on BBCA.

I was in Tampa for work and they were showing it at the nearby AMC. I should have gone.

Re: Doctor Who Series 9 (BBCA) - Premieres 9/19/15

I did end up going. Was fun to see it on the big screen. I don't think the 3-D added anything. Not a lot of people in the theater, maybe 25% full.

The new prequel (not the one in this thread) was fun and gives a hint of where we are headed. At the end Will Wheaton did a sit down interview with Peter/Jenna. I didn't take away anything really new, but it was interesting.

Re: Doctor Who Series 9 (BBCA) - Premieres 9/19/15

Jenna Coleman confirmed her official exit from Doctor Who this season. I know that season eight was working towards that but the tone shifted to her staying with the Doctor in the end. However, on BBC Radio 1 yesterday, she confirmed her departure this year with "I have left the Tardis..."

Coleman will move on to an iTV production where she'll play Queen Victoria.

Re: Doctor Who Series 9 (BBCA) - Premieres 9/19/15

That's fine. First, Capaldi really needs his own companion. Second, Coleman and Capaldi don't have much chemistry together. It's actually distracting how little they have. They are actually worse than Barry & Iris on season one of The Flash.

I just started this series and am loving it thus far. Pure fun television. I started with the series from 2005 with "Rose". Is it worth watching the older episodes also?

The older pre-Moffat episodes are worth a watch. Especially since Moffat figured out how to tie those Doctors in with the "reboot" not just in Day of the Doctor but in season 8.

The show prior to the 2005 relaunch was really a different beast. Almost all the stories were multiple-episode serials, with some stories taking as many as 10 episodes to play out, although the original series was also shorter at 25 minutes an episode typically.

I've only dabbled in older Doctor Who, seeing the occasional serial. They're good if you can get past the budgetary restrictions and difference in pacing.

BBCA is actually airing some Tom Baker stories over the next few weeks:
http://www.bbcamerica.com/anglopheni...ere-is-he-now/

we’ll be having Breakfast with Tom Baker on BBC AMERICA as of this Sunday, September 20 at 9 am and Monday through Friday at 10 am. You’re invited too!

Following the return of Doctor Who on September 19, BBCA will be airing classic Doctor Who episodes featuring the Fourth Doctor through the end of September into October, in the mornings starting next week.
Here's what they have listed in the schedule so far, ET times:
http://www.bbcamerica.com/schedule/
9/20 9:00AM Doctor Who: Genesis of the Daleks
9/20 12:00PM Doctor Who: The Seeds of Doom
9/21 10:00AM Doctor Who: Terror of the Zygons
9/22 10:00AM Doctor Who: Pyramids of Mars
9/23 10:00AM Doctor Who: The Hand of Fear
9/24 10:00AM Doctor Who: The Brain of Morbius
9/25 10:00AM Doctor Who: The Robots of Death
