MGM & Sinclair Group to launch new 24/7 Science Fiction network in 2015

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Sinclair Television Group today announced plans to launch a new science fiction network, which will feature over 1,500 hours of content from MGM — including existing episodes of the Stargate franchise.

The companies will partner to jointly create, develop, distribute, and air what they call “the first ever 24 hour / 7 day per week science fiction multi-channel network.”

MGM will handle programming and other aspects of operation for Sinclair, which will own the network.

The as yet unnamed network will premiere in the fourth quarter of 2015 with availability in approximately 30 percent of the United States, with plans for distribution deals with other broadcasters prior to launch.

Programming on the network will include a mix of science fiction, fantasy, and adventure series, including titles from MGM-produced TV series such as Stargate, Poltergeist: The Legacy, The Outer Limits, and Dead Like Me.

“We are excited to be partnering with MGM on the launch of the first ever science fiction multi-channel network,” David Amy, Chief Operating Officer of Sinclair Broadcast Group, said in a press release. “MGM has an extensive collection of science fiction films and television movies that appeal to a vast audience who will now be able to access that content through broadcast television.”

“As a producer of some of the genre’s greatest films and television series, MGM knows how passionate and loyal fans are about Sci-Fi,” John Bryan, MGM’s President of Domestic Television Distribution, said.

MGM began producing original science fiction series in the mid-1990s, with Showtime as its primary distribution partner. Today the studio’s TV arm produces scripted dramas such as Vikings (History), Teen Wolf (MTV), and A.D. – The Bible Continues (NBC).

I wonder if Directv would carry this. I wouldn't mind seeing old Stargate, Poltergeist and The Outer Limits episodes. I guess this is MGM's answer to compete with SyFy, which NBC owns.

The only drawback I see is that SyFy produces original new shows and it doesn't sound like this network is doing that just yet. That would cost this network a shitload of money to develop and produce new shows. This probably means that most if not all of MGM's TV library would be pulled from SyFy.

Awesome! I haven't watched Braveheart in a while; it'll be good to see it again.

MGM has a boatload of junky fantasy and sci-fi movies in their back catalog. Seeing the new Outer Limits again in HD might interest me.

There is enough old science fiction/fantasy/horror programming out there now to make a fucking incredible science fiction channel: all of the Trek series, Babylon 5, Twilight Zone (3 series), Outer Limits (2 series), X-Files, Buffy/Angel, Firefly, Lost, Farscape, Battlestar Galactica, Supernatural, Doctor Who, and Fringe, in addition to tons of even more mediocre fare. And, not to mention, currently-running programs like Walking Dead, Agents of SHIELD, and Orphan Black when they become available.

Problem is that it's spread out over dozens of rights holders and studios and it would be impossible to get it all under a single channel.

Are they planning too show horror/sci-fi movies from the MGM Library?

If it somehow leads to more Stargate or at least SG-1 getting an HD release, I'll be happy (or really any new sci-fi content, I don't have much need for a rerun channel).

The good news is that Netflix already has almost all those shows. Most of them are in HD. And there's no commercials.

I'd love to see one of these streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, Prime) create a feature that allows users to select a list of TV series, and it would play random episodes one after another, all day long like your own TV channel.

With Sinclair Television Group's involvement, I would assume this will be an OTA network.

Sinclair already has existing ties with MGM through two OTA networks: ThisTV and MeTV (which also has content from CBS Networks and Fox). Sinclair also has deals with Sony; so there's always the strong possibility Sinclair and MGM can get content from other companies.

I was wondering about this being an OTA set up. If so, hopefully it will be available in my area. I'll really be looking forward to it. I became rather disappointed with Syfy... even before they did that silly name change.

This will suck just like most channels do already. Chiller took shows from Syfy, this channel will take from both of them and they'll all be mediocre. And BigDave was right Netflix is better than all of them I wish they could The Outer Limits.

Be careful what you wish for, Sinclair does own Ring of Honor wrestling, which currently airs on Destination America.
