Not to take anything away from Colbert's interview with Biden (I didn't see it yet) but Ferguson was one of the best at giving great interviews. Not just for his off the cuff, non-traditional style but with the right guest he could have a very intelligent and meaningful conversation. Its the reason why he won a Peabody Award for his interview with Desmond Tutu. Hopefully Colbert will step in and fill some of the void left by hosts like him.

I have the whole shows on my DVR. I'll probably watch when I get home this weekend.

Colbert's wonderful & very moving interview with Joe Biden reminded me of Letterman interviewing someone at his very best.

Outstanding TV. I've watched it twice already and still have it saved.

Didn't say no one else had done it, said no one else is doing it in 2015

There are 19 writers on Stephen Colbert's writing staff.

17 white men. 2 white women. no minorities.

Maybe no qualified minorities applied for the job?

The Biden interview was golden, but Everything else just feels like Colbert Report lite.

He really needs to find his own thing before the audience bails.

And, yeah, the band doesn't do anything for me. The World's Most Dangerous Band/CBS Orchestra was the absolute gold standard for a live talk show band and Dave and Paul had a great oddball chemistry. Maybe Colbert can lure Reggie Watts away from Cordon.

Because of 4 full segments with guest (2 with the first one, 1 with the second and a musical guest), he almost has no time to get rolling with any funny bits of his own. They seriously need to cut one or two of the guests and have Colbert do more outlandish bits.

Honestly Reggie Watts would drive me further away from this show. I can't stand the guy and think he tries too hard at being a hipster musician/comedian.

Why not stop doing musical guests every show like all these shows do.

I don't need to hear that every night. Just have another guest or more Host time doing his thing.

Re: The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (premieres Sept. 8, 2015)

I thought Friday's show was a marked improvement. While I don't think he should've sang with Paul Simon, I liked his bit with him as a cover band. He had good rapport with both guests, and his bit with Laura Linney and the lizard person, while not classics, were solid. Hope he keeps improving like this.

I believe the thinking is that the musical guest's fanbase will tune-in whether they know Colbert or not. It's about expanding your potential audience. You can always tell what kind of demo a show wants by what type of musical acts it books.

Mavis Staples, Kendrick Lamar, Tobey Keith, Paul Simon, Pearl Jam (upcoming)... looks like he's going after every demo.

Come back in a year and we'll see how the musical line-up develops.

I'm loving it. Good to see Colbert back on TV. I missed him during the hiatus. And I hope this is a 10+ year job for him.

On Stephen Colbert's new show, I don't care that much about the interviews or the music performances - instead I want more stuff like this segment:

"Unseen Mysteries Of The Hidden Secrets"

Colbert has to introduce himself to the American public... as himself.

A great way to do this is to do interviews and have musical guests that interest him and that he likes.

"My name has been in the media for a decade, but you don't know me. Well, these are things I like and these are subjects I am interested in."

Ultimately, any talk show succeeds or fails based on an audience's desire to form a relationship with the host.

From what I gather from most of the these comments:

-Because he is not going 'full Colbert Show schtick' he is turning off alot of diehard fans.

-Because he is still doing a 'semi Colbert Show schtick' he isn't gaining any news fans who didn't like the Comedy Central Show.

-He will always have his base of fans that love him no matter what.

This is why I was always curious as to why CBS hired him to begin with, because Colbert is just not a person for everyone, as I think you either love or hate em and there isn't much in between. That worked perfect for a Comedy Central Show because you get that niche audience every night with guaranteed ratings. But for CBS, they are looking for a mass audience that has to go up against NBC and ABC every night, so you can't hire a guy that is so polarizing to some people and so beloved by other people.

I equate it to hiring Norm McDonald to do a late night show. I absolutely love his humor, but alot of people I know don't get it nor do they like him. As much as I love Norm McDonald, I don't think he would work on ABC, NBC, CBS late night, as he would be perfect like Colbert on a Cable Network Late Night Show where he can appeal to his diehard fans who totally get his humor.
