Fox picks up DC/Vertigo's Lucifer (D: Len Weisman, S: Tom Ellis)
Seems a bit odd to me that Fox is going to produce a Vertigo property after NBC's Constantine has been cancelled.

For those curious as to what Lucifer is.
I would love to see a good adaption of Lucifer but will it have the audience to support it?

Fox again? With their stellar support behind it should last about as long as Constantine did.

Interesting that this is from the creator of Californication Tom Kapinos.
The star of the show is Tom Ellis, who was on the USA series Rush last summer. I thought that show was pretty underrated. Ellis IMO has a lot of charisma.

This is the kind of property that when adapted by Hollywood could be anything. It will also seem very derivative since so many shows have mined this territory over the past 15 years.
I would expect this series to have even fewer comic book nods than Gotham or Constantine, which is why Fox likely optioned it.
I will bet good money that on a series like Lucifer that the writing staff doesn't even bother reading the original comic run.

From the article: "... as the Lord of Hell who, bored and unhappy, resigns his throne and abandons his kingdom for Los Angeles. There, he gets his kicks helping the police punish criminals."
Um, no, that isn't remotely what Lucifer is about. At all. Wrong network, wrong treatment of the source material. As a HUGE fan of Lucifer, this is an absolute non-starter for me. Lucifer is an epic, gothic, sweeping fantastical exploration of the cosmos, religion, hubris, and awesomeness. It has fuck-all to do with Lucifer helping cops.

Really? They're going to use one of the most powerful entities in the universe, someone who led a war against God, someone who has the power to alter the rules of reality, the avatar of Pride, to help the police?
I suppose they'll demote Mazikeen from loyal subject to romantic interest. Americans wouldn't understand the ruler-subject relationship anyway.

I have heard about the comics, but never read them. I might give this show a chance. I liked the lead actor on that USA show Rush.
FOX had a show in the late 90s called Brimstone. It was an ok show, but got canned. It was about a cop who was sent to Hell for killing his wife's rapist back in the 80s. I can't remember all the plot details, damned souls escaped from Hell and came back to Earth as humans and the cop was sent back by the Devil played by John Glover to capture the souls.

Actually had they just called this show The Specter, it would have been better. Jim Corrigan was a policeman anyways...
Maybe HBO will do better justice to Preacher. I haven't read them yet but I have them all sitting in a box.

Watched the pilot tonight and it was quite entertaining. Ellis reminds me of a Welsh version of Paul Rudd. Here's hoping the show lasts a while.

They screened the pilot during the CW panel at NYCC. Definitely more enjoyable than Supergirl.
