Hulu picks up Seinfeld for $180 mil

Nooooooo! Hulu is shit. Worse quality than HDTV with commercials. Why anyone would pay for Hulu+ is beyond me. At least it will still be on TBS where I can DVR it and skip commercials.
Hopefully they'll still do a blu-ray set of Seinfeld sometime in the near future.
In another sign that Hulu is stepping up its game, the digital video giant has landed the SVOD rights to “Seinfeld,” cutting a deal with Sony Pictures TV for all 180 episodes of the enduring NBC comedy.
The deal is said to be valued at just under $1 million an episode, which translates to a nearly $180 million windfall to be split by distributor Sony TV, Time Warner’s Castle Rock and “Seinfeld” profit participants, including star/co-creator Jerry Seinfeld and co-creator Larry David. The pact is expected to be announced at Hulu’s upfront presentation on Wednesday.

They need to make it commercial free like the Criterion stuff.
I pay $2.50 or so a month for Hulu Plus, worth every cent, and the quality is excellent, not sure where those complaints come from, though I only ever watch it on the Roku 3.
The commercials suck, but they're shorter than what you get on VOD and regular TV, the PQ is better than what I get in HD with Comcast, and I can actually fast forward.

$2.50 a month? I thought it was as expensive as Netflix.

Yeah, it's normally $8, I did that for a year too and didn't feel ripped off. But I'm being cheap this year and Ebay'd a 12 month card for like $28. What can I say, I cut cable less to save money and more because I just can't afford it right now.

You might want to check your internet connection if that's what you're seeing. The quality of Hulu I'm seeing is pretty much the same as live HDTV. No problems here whatsoever.

Well, looks like Jerry is going to get another parking structure filled with vintage high end cars.

I suspect this deal will interfere with any possibility of a Blu-ray set. It's 2015 and the market for a Seinfeld Blu-ray set is shrinking. I guess we should be grateful it came out on DVD.

And it's only $65 on DVD.

Same reason The Simpsons was $750m, just having them all accessible on demand. It's nicer than having to put them all on your Plex server to get them on demand when you want.

Hulu is heavily compressed. I have FIOS which isn't, plus it has surround, which Hulu does not. I wouldn't even waste my time with it.

Yeah, FiOS is 14mbps, Hulu is only about 2.8 mbps, Netflix is 3.8mbps (their 4K is about 16mbps)
It looks surprisingly good considering (helped by most TV shows being rather static), at least it does on my 106". The fact Hulu is 2 channel is kind of annoying though.
Those two factors really don't affect Seinfeld though. All I can say about that is at least it wasn't Yahoo.

This is what studios have an eye on when they pull Blu-ray releases for popular shows.

Seinfeld and Friends were tied at the hip for a while when it came to potential BD releases. I wonder how the Friends BD set did--it's hard to imagine it doing that well considering the demographic and the current media landscape.

To my recollection, no episode of Seinfeld was ever made, and subsequently broadcast, in HDTV anyway, so what's the big deal? You'll be seeing it on Hulu the same way you saw it on NBC.

Sony spent $45 million on a complete HD restoration for Seinfeld a few years ago. The masters were struck for the large syndication deal but could have easily been used on Blu-ray.
