Good episode. Maybe the have some older writers back? The shock twists that were a staple of season 1/2 seem to be back, which is a good thing. The vampire witches were a good twist.
Still not sold on the show post Dorbrev leaving.

The actress playing Elena is leaving the show. Also one of the brothers is leaving. The Afterbuzz show of this episode had the actress playing the vampire mom on it.
For the episode itself I liked it. Enzo being turned by vampire mom made my eyes roll but story behind it was cool.

Good episode. They kind of foreshadowed Elena leaving when she was asked if she missed having the opportunity to have a family. You could see the guilt on Damon's face. Someone mentioned it here a few weeks ago, but seems likely the "cure" will come back into play and Damon will probably force Elena to take it so that she can get the hell out of Mystic Falls and have a life.
I liked how Mama Salvatore wasn't exactly true to that confession/intervention to Stefan. The reveal on who she actually is and her motives was interesting.
I'm so over Evil Caroline.

Trevino is no great loss, that character should have been killed off three seasons ago when most of the werewolves moved to The Originals.
The last few episodes have been bittersweet knowing that Elena is gone next year. The writing has actually tightened up for three or four episodes in a row, which hasn't been seen in over two years. I would quickly hook Damon and Bonnie up if I was heading next season, put them in a rivalry over something with Stefan and Caroline. There are actually two or three seasons' worth of plot from that direction if they handle it right.

Two or three seasons worth of materials? Are we watching the same show?
While I've enjoyed the slower pace of the season, it lack of a central threat has hurt things as we progress. Kai ended up flat since he he was so annoying (although I felt sorry foe him when Bonnie screwed him over). At least the witch vampires help, but it's too little too late.
I think the biggest issue - no endgame. The search for the cure would have been a good story, but that was 2 season ago and they wasted it on Katherine. <shrug>
