Didn't think it was that funny, but the 22 minutes (watched it on Hulu with no commercials) breezed by. I did like seeing what transpired that broke up Kermit and Piggy.

Hope this show won't have to rely heavily on celebrity cameos, but I'm sure they will use it to cross promote other ABC shows. Although I didn't mind seeing Elizabeth Banks. I could watch her reading the phone book. Piggy's conflict with her because it was the poster seen when Kermit broke up with her was

I liked that vibe too. I was surprised about Fozzie's bear lines when he was driving to the parents' house.

I for one would love celebrity cameos every week; it's what made the old Muppet Show and Muppet Movie. We could all rattle off favorite celebrity moments from the original show. Maybe not the funniest, but the first two that come to mind are when Leslie Anne Warren was the host, and everyone thought it was the rock-n-roll trio Les, Lee, and Warren. Or when Animal's hero, James Coburn was host, only for Animal to find that all Coburn wanted to do was meditate.

Why would Segel get royalties on Walter? He wrote the Muppets, I doubt he has any legal ownership. He was paid to write/play in Henson's sandbox.

I think the celebrities are there to stay. Loved Elizabeth Banks on the show. However, found the show kind of mean spirited, especially Kermit. Miss Piggy actually seemed calm and more down to earth, which is shocking. But man Kermit is an asshole. This relationship break up hopefully won't last. And not a big fan of the whole Office style of things. Miss the funny Muppets, which didn't have a lot of moments there.

Re: The Muppets (ABC) - Season 1 Thread - Premieres 9/22/15

I haven't watched the episode yet, but with all of the comments about it being similar to The Office, I did a quick clickthrough of it on YouTube. I hate that style of show, used also in Parks and Recreation, the pseudo-documentary thing. Zooming the camera in and out, extremely tight, etc.

I love the Muppets, and will eventually get around to watching this, but that puts a damper on my excitement.

Segel might have a different legal arrangement with Disney and Henson, but if you create a character as a writer for one show/movie and that character is subsequently used in another show/movie, you profit from that use even if you are not involved in the new show/movie.

The situation may be complicated by the fact that Jason Segel and Nick Stoller did not create Walter's physical appearance, although they did conceptualize Walter as a "human" character.

Writers get royalties if they create an original character for one production entity and that character is subsequently used on another production.

I only laughed a few times. I'll probably watch episodes here and there when I have a half-hour slot to fill.

That may be true in some cases but I can't imagine a 50+ year old property owned by Disney would allow a writer to come in and create something that they don't own. That just doesn't make sense to me. Now if Segel was hired to write a Muppet-like movie not set in the Muppet universe that subsequently went on to spawn sequels and tv shows, then I can see royalties flowing. That would be something completely original.

The Star Trek thing is interesting though.

Theoretically that means JJ Abrams will get royalties in perpetuity for new SW characters if they're ever used in anything(sequels, novels, etc) again?
Sounds like a can of worms to me.

Like I said, I don't know what legal arrangements Segel/Stoller have with DisneyHenson.

Let's do this: See if Walter shows up, and then see if Segel's name shows up in the end credits.

Second ep fell a bit flat for me, although the last two cameos helped it out

I liked this one too...especially Kermit. I like how he's a little more devilish and less "straight-laced" in this new take. I loved when he revealed the new banner and looked over at Grobin and said "bye-bye!"

The Fishburne cameo was hilarious as well.

Yeah, she looked amazing. Weird how these actresses look better than ever, but still get less and less work just because they're "older".

Well she WAS on Dancing with the Stars and is in Switched at Birth...plus she did Left Behind. Maybe some of them not the BEST of choices, but she is getting plenty of work...
