Battle Creek (CBS) -- EP: Vince Gilligan -- S: Winters/Duhamel -- Series Thread

FBI AGENT MILT CHAMBERLAIN AND DET. RUSS AGNEW PARTNER FOR THE FIRST TIME TO CLEAN UP THE HARDSCRABBLE STREETS OF BATTLE CREEK, MICH., ON THE SERIES PREMIERE OF "BATTLE CREEK," SUNDAY, MARCH 1

Dean Winters, Josh Duhamel, Academy Award Nominee and Golden Globe Award Winner Janet McTeer, Kal Penn, Aubrey Dollar and Edward Fordham, Jr. Star

Teleplay by Executive Producers David Shore and Vince Gilligan

"The Battle Creek Way" - Jaded Det. Russ Agnew reluctantly partners with charming FBI Agent Milt Chamberlain to solve a drug-related double homicide, but while Milt investigates with the high-tech resources of the FBI, Russ prefers old-school police work and instinct, on the series premiere of BATTLE CREEK, Sunday, March 1 (10:00-11:00, ET/PT), on the CBS Television Network. Dean Winters, Josh Duhamel, Academy Award Nominee and Golden Globe Award Winner Janet McTeer, Kal Penn, Aubrey Dollar and Edward Fordham, Jr. star. The teleplay was written by executive producers David Shore and Vince Gilligan.

BATTLE CREEK stars Josh Duhamel and Dean Winters in a drama about two mismatched law enforcement officers whose polar opposite views of the world and crime-solving breed frustration, disdain, humor and possibly a grudging respect as they clean up the hardscrabble streets of Battle Creek, Mich. Det. Russ Agnew, a good but gruff, hard-boiled detective, has his world upended when strikingly handsome, charismatic Special Agent Milton Chamberlain opens an FBI field office at the police station and chooses Russ to be his partner. Milt's polished sophistication and access to unlimited state-of-the-art equipment is impressive to his new co-workers in the absurdly underfunded department. As Russ and Milt work long hours together in the economically distressed city of Battle Creek, the question is: will it be Milt's charm and endless supply of high-end resources or Russ's old-fashioned cynicism, guile and deception that prove to be the keys to catching the bad guys in his beloved hometown? Janet McTeer, Kal Penn, Edward Fordham, Jr. and Aubrey Dollar also star.

13 episode order

David Shore, who created House, is the showrunner. Vince Gilligan co-created the show and co-wrote the 1st episode. He's a credited EP, but is working on Better Call Saul day to day.

Bryan Singer directed episode 1 and will be an EP as well.

Some really talented people behind the scenes on this show. I love Duhamel and Winters. Hopefully this will not take itself too seriously and be funny as well.

This airs at 10pm on Sundays, so I don't know how many of you will make the effort to stay up late and watch this live or will wait until Monday to watch it via DVR. Plus, Sundays are always crowded.

FYI, this is not a serial drama (Just wanted to make that clear)

Re: Battle Creek (S1E01) -- EP: Vince Gilligan -- "The Battle Creek Way" -- 3/1/15

I heard about this show and plan to check it out. I don't know if it would have been on my radar normally, but my wife grew up not far from Battle Creek, so I've told her we should give it a look.

Doesn't look like my type of show at all. Sorry Vince, but I'm passing. Too much to watch on Sundays.

Same here. I don't plan on tuning in either. Might change that if it starts getting some buzz which has been somewhat muted this far.

Here's Dominic Patten's video review from Deadline.com He says it's formulaic, but funny and worth watching even though there is so much stuff on tonight.

Sepinwall's review goes on to say there are some visual nods to Heisenberg in episode 2 (whatever that means). Curiosity may end up getting the better of me.

I'll record it as a fan of Gilligan but the synopsis doesn't interest me that much and I generally don't like network shows like this.

How much will Vince Gilligan really have to do with this?

It sounds like he was trying to pitch this show years ago and nobody bought it. Only after Breaking Bad made Vince Gilligan a household name did it get revisited.

I see he wrote episode 1, but I don't see how he's going to be hands-on with Better Call Saul and this show, too.

Vince wrote the script 12 years ago, but it was passed on back then. CBS decided to re-visit it and brought in David Shore. Vince approved the hiring. Vince did go out and promote Battle Creek last summer at the TCA's. It's explained here and how this whole thing came about.

http://deadline.com/2014/07/tca-davi...eek-qa-805506/

David Shore is the showrunner. Vince is overseeing Better Call Saul day to day since he's co-showrunner and won't be involved on this show day to day. I'm sure he has some say in the scripts, but the main day to day duties belong to Shore.

After Breaking Bad ended, Vince re-signed with Sony Pictures to develop and produce new projects for network and cable. This show and Better Call Saul were the first 2 projects from his new deal.

It looks funny enough that we'll record it (along with Madam Secretary) to watch when we have time.

I tuned in because Gilligan's name was attached but wow, what an incredible disappointment. Just another dopey cop show procedural. Awful cheesy music, clichéd characters, and oil & water partner tropes all present and accounted for. One and done.

That is a shame, since Duhamel probably deserves better at this point.

Re: Battle Creek (S1E01) -- EP: Vince Gilligan -- "The Battle Creek Way" -- 3/1/15

When i first saw the trailer for this i just sighed and shrugged my shoulders ''it's just another CBS cop procedural'' but then later i found out Vince Gilligan was a part of it and then i became a little more interested.

I guess I'll wait a while and see if the buzz is good like other people said.

Re: Battle Creek (S1E01) -- EP: Vince Gilligan -- "The Battle Creek Way" -- 3/1/15

I just finished watching it and thought it was alright. I wasn't jumping out of my seat, but I was entertained for the 45 minutes. It has potential to be clever when Shore and his writers get more comfortable with the characters. Very rarely is a Pilot episode a home run. I did like the interactions between Winters and Duhamel. Russ and Milt were kind of funny at times and I liked how Russ rolled his eyes everytime Milt was being Mr. Goody Two-Shoes. I think the intent was to also poke fun at the crime genre in some scenes, especially the final one.

I laughed at the opening sequence when they raided the restaurant and how inept their equipment was and then Russ got decked.

The plot was a pretty by the numbers crime of the week, so if you're not really a fan of CBS's crime of the week formula, then maybe this isn't for you. Bill Needle made it pretty clear that he hates the crime of the week genre, so I say take his pretty harsh opinion with a grain of salt. The strength of this series if it continues beyond this season will be Winters and Duhamel and their interactions. I agree with Sepinwall and Patten's reviews of the show. Nothing groundbreaking, but certainly watchable if you're a fan of the genre.

Re: Battle Creek (S1E01) -- EP: Vince Gilligan -- "The Battle Creek Way" -- 3/1/15

If anything, knowing of Vince's involvement probably hurt this show a bit because it created certain expectations. I thought it was fun for what it was, and if you're a fan of semi-comedic cop/FBI shows like Bones or Castle this will probably be right up your alley. I generally don't last long with episodic hour-long shows, so I'm not sure if I'll stick with it.

Got a 1.0 demo rating, not sure what CBS is doing trying to launch a show at 10 pm on a Sunday after two of their most lowly rated shows.

I think meh gives it too much credit. I'll watch another show or 2 to see if there is any redeeming value.

Watched the pilot last night and wasn't impressed. Nothing terribly original or interesting about this show. I understand the 13 episodes are already in the bag. My gut tells me this will be a candidate for a summer 'burn off' if the low ratings continue or decline further.

This was lame. I was hoping for something like Picket Fences. Another unoriginal run of the mill CBS procedural crime drama.

I couldn't make it past the opening scene. So bad. Huge fan of Dean Winters too.
