IN A UNIQUE FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND EPISODE OF "MODERN FAMILY," THE MOCKUMENTARY LENS GOES DIGITAL WHEN CLAIRE'S COMPUTER SCREEN BECOMES OUR WINDOW INTO THIS MODERN FAMILY

"Connection Lost" - Claire's computer becomes the hub of all the family's activities when she gets stuck at the airport and is desperate to reach Haley after a big fight. After FaceTiming with Phil and the rest of the family to help track her down, Claire quickly turns to online snooping which inevitably becomes disturbing real quick and everyone gets sucked into the online drama, on "Modern Family," WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25 (9:00-9:31 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

Hmm. I don't like the sound of that gimmick.

It was definitely a gimmick but it was funny as hell.

I thought the same thing.

I wonder how much Apple paid for this.

I thought it was good though. Gimmicky, yes, but the story was definitely better with the gimmick. The one thing is that I thought it was weird to watch for 22 minutes. I think it may have worked better if they changed perspectives.

I thought it was really funny, interesting to watch and kind of ballsy to do.

Also, of course Apple probably paid for it, but I'd rather see people use real products like Apple, Facebook and Pinterest than made up TV versions.

With all that product placement, why did I still have to sit through commercials?

Extremely clever and very funny. Organization porn.

Interesting concept, I had read about it and thought it was a bold move. I think they executed it well, but it got kind of old. I agree it might have been stronger if it were cut with "regular" footage, because mostly I was just thinking, "why?" A few jokes played on the gimmick well - like seeing Claire do web searches and such and kind of show where her mind wanders when she's talking - but watching small windows of faces on a fake computer screen on a real screen wasn't very satisfying for 30 minutes.

I got annoyed with this before they even got to the opening credits.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by this episode. I've never been happier to be proven wrong.

They really made the most of it. The reveals of both Haley and Alex's locations wouldn't have worked nearly as well without the constrained cell/laptop screens. And the multiple cuts back to Luke's hair

I meant to rewind it, but what phone did Haley call her mom on at the end of the episode? Because hers was in Vegas. That's the only bit that threw me, unless she was on a tablet or something at the house and I didn't notice it.

She was on a tablet.

Am I the only one that was irked that Phil had his TV so high up?

It's been that way forever. The Dunphys are "above the mantel" people, apparently.

Annoys me every damn time I see it.

Jay has his TV that way too.

Animals. All of them.

Above the mantle is the only way to watch tv when you have kids running around your living room for years. :)

My best friend has her TV way up like that. I hate having to "sit" in an almost lying down position to watch it. That's why no one likes the front rows at the theatre.

I thought this was their best episode of the season. A gimmick that not only worked, but worked brilliantly.

I fear that other shows will try to copy this with poorly written material that won't work as well as this did.

Re: Modern Family (S616) - "Connection Lost" - 2/25/15

I expected the worst with this show, but it actually executed quite well. I was impressed.
I hate that this show continues to be a 20 minute Apple commercial though.

I also hate the idea of putting a TV above the fireplace mantel. That's no way to watch TV.
However, it also bothers me when people plop their audio/video equipment right front of the fireplace - totally making the fireplace irrelevant.

Re: Modern Family (S616) - "Connection Lost" - 2/25/15

We use 95% Apple stuff in my house. Why is it so weird that a TV family would too?

I never understand this criticism. I can see like 10 brand names from where I am sitting.

I found a few of the gags enjoyable but the concept for the whole episode was annoying. Again Phil had the lines. I like how they had Jay all confused. That was good because it was realistic.

I thought I would get sick of this after the opening, but I pretty much enjoyed it from start to finish.

 at Luke's "Shemp" haircut.
