Can't wait. This has overtaken GoT as my favorite show on TV.

First episode awesome. I'm not surprised that the vikings decided to fight but I am surprised that they didn't go back for more men or ask how many men they would be facing.

Not sure why the brother thought that they would attack both sides of the river at the same time. He is certainly no Ecbert when it comes to battle strategy.

That was absolutely comical...

What were they thinking being on separate side of the river.

Yeah it doesn't make sense to split your force to engage a larger forces. Best to keep the force together and attack one side with a near equal force.

Ecbert wasn't so much the great strategist. He was stealing ideas from the Romans. No denying his brilliance though...he was smart enough and open-minded enough to realize that he has a treasure trove of information from "the pagan savages" that his fellow Britons wouldn't even consider using and would toss on a bonfire as heresy. He also knows whom to choose as his allies.

That was a superb opening episode. I actually thought last season was a bit uneven but this is a great start. This series has stunning location photography.

Had the Saxons ever heard of flaming arrows? They seemed perfect in that situation. I guess that would have made the Vikings' victory look impossible.

Re: Vikings (History Channel) - Season Three Discussion Thread - premieres 2/19/15

The thing I really like about this show is the storylines are generally pretty tight and it seems like there are much less "filler" storylines (or even entire episodes) like you see on a lot of shows. And it has a real good blend of action and character development.

Solid season opener. I'm interested to see where the story line with Lagatha heads on her other homeland and her second in command that is plotting against her.

The splitting of the forces seemed strange, but I imagine they were trying to protect both shores and not allow the enemy to land and get a foothold. It was odd that they didn't attempt to even out the forces a bit on both sides though.

Unofficially renewed for a 4th season.

Investors raised funding for a potential 16 episode 4th season before a tax break deadline.

Good news! As wirefan mentioned above the show already contains more story in 10 episodes than most shows do in 3 seasons. A 16 episode run would be great if for no other reason than it is such a long wait between seasons. But hopefully they keep that dense storytelling going. Maybe an 8/8 split like The Walking Dead would be good for that.

Good news on the renewal!

The show has been really good so I trust they aren't just adding 6 hours of filler to an existing plan if they go to a 16 episode season. It's not like Kurt Sutter is the showrunner.. (couldn't resist)

It wouldn't surprise me at all if that "4th season" gets split over two broadcast years with 8 episodes each.

Kind of surprised to see Siggy's end tonight, would rather it have been Aslaug, but I read an interview where Gilsig said she was looking to leave as she had family things that needed her attention.

Really not interested in the England story, so I'm happy with Horik's son and Jarl Borg's wife showing up.

And also at the final scene with everyone throwing their cups on the floor.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: This show covers more story ground than any I've seen. Hard to believe this hasn't even hit the half-way mark of season 3 yet. Most shows would have drug this much plot out for 7 or 8 seasons at least.

Another pretty damn solid episode.

I apologize in advance for being completely clueless, but can someone help me out on the wanderer story?

Was the cost of the wanderer taking the pain away from the baby other children? (including the 2 in the previous episode as well?) And that Siggy basically just traded her life for the two sons? Or were the deaths for something else?

I guess we were supposed to read something like you mentioned in that sub-arc. It was all very mysterious and I guess now the Queen will be pregnant with a baby she thinks is a demi-god.

I've never seen this show the same way since I learned that Europe gets a longer, unedited version. This latest episode felt like several scenes were missing from History's airing.

Re: Vikings (History Channel) - Season Three Discussion Thread - premieres 2/19/15

The Wanderer character plays into the whole Odin mythology and his tryst with Aslaug makes sense given that her parents were Sigurd and Brynhildr. For as much as they like to tout this as a history show the story of Ragnar is drawn from an Icelandic saga and contains plenty of fantastical touches.

Re: Vikings (History Channel) - Season Three Discussion Thread - premieres 2/19/15

Siggy was a great character but was pretty much useless by the end of season 2.

Her death was kind of stupid. I thought the whole thing was a dream... why those 2 little shits would wander out onto the lake in the first place, and not listen to her when she called them back... seemed all too convenient.
