Rolling Stone mag ranks every SNL Cast member

As usual, another poor list, but a pretty interesting read. I would have put Phil Hartman as #1

Terrible list. They have some talented people near the end and then some random scrubs in the middle or top half.

Darrell Hammond is way too low at 49, too.

I thought Cheri Oteri should have been ranked a little bit higher and also separate from Chris Kattan. I did enjoy the years she was on with other females like Molly Shannon and Ana Gasteyer.

I get the feeling a lot of recognizable names were placed at the bottom of the list to get people reading the article. As always, more of a committee-driven gimmick than anything else.

138 Victoria Jackson

135 Norm MacDonald

73 Brooks Wheelan

62 Beth Cahill

When I think back on all of Wheelan's memorable sketches and Cahill's unforgettable characters...

That trio of females was great to me. All three would make my top 20.

I love Tina Fey but #3 all-time?

Amen. I could say that they had me until "Rolling Stone", but since those were the first words of the thread title, they never had me. Rolling Stone polls and rank lists are now, then, and always will be, fucking useless and utterly idiotic.

I am just shocked that Rolling Stone didn't put U2 as number one instead of Belushi.

Whenever this is a top 100 list on any topic, I always wonder if there will ever be a list that everybody agrees with. Nuff said.

If Rolling Stone was number one in a ranking of useless magazines could we all get behind that decision?

Re: Rolling Stone mag ranks every SNL Cast member

Tina Fey at #3? Amy Poehler at #8? Good lord, the love they get these days astounds me. Don't get me wrong they are very funny, but they're not top 10 funny of all-time SNL cast members!

Here would be my top 10:

1. Eddie Murphy - he carried the show in the early 80's from being cancelled and his impressions of James Brown, Buck Wheat, Stevie Wonder, etc are some of the best sketch TV ever.

2. John Belushi - So many great characters from the original cast, I believe was better then Chevy Chase in the 1st season

3. Dana Carvey - Carvey could pretty much do anything: Carson, Church Lady, Hans & Frans, Regis, and his George Bush 41 was classic.

4. Billy Crystal - Even though he was only on for 1 season, he was as versatile as Dana Carvey as he could do any impression. His Sammy Davis Jr was the best

5. Phil Hartman - He was the perfect compliment to Dana Carvey, as he didn't need to be the #1 guy in every sketch. His Bill Clinton was dead on.

6. Martin Short - Just like Crystal, he was only there for 1 season, so who knows how many great characters he could have done. Ed Grimley worshipping Pat Sajak was still his funniest character.

7. Gilda Radner- SNL has had some funny women from each era, but Gilda is still the funniest.

8. Will Ferrell- 'More Cowbells' sketch is still one of the funniest sketches ever. And his crazy Harry Carey was great too.

9. Chris Farley- Even though he played the typical fat guy in every skit, no denying Farley was funny as hell. Chippendales was his best sketch.

10. Darrell Hammond- Another guy that could do any impression, as he was sort of like Phil Hartman where he didn't need to be the #1.

The show has been pretty much unwatchable for the past 10-15 years so I tried to get every era in my top 10:

1976-80 era: 2 cast members
1980-84 era: 1 cast member
1984-85 era: 2 cast members
1986-95 era: 3 cast members
1996-02 era: 2 cast members

Re: Rolling Stone mag ranks every SNL Cast member

watchmojo.com has a pretty good list I can get behind.

10. John Belushi
9. Gilda Radner
8. Dana Carvey
7. Dan Aykroyd
6. Phil Hartman
5. Kristen Wiig
4. Mike Myers
3. Eddie Murphy
2. Chris Farley
1. Will Farrell

Honorable Mentions: Adam Sandler, Jason Sudeikis, Darrell Hammond, Bill Murray, Bill Hader

The list is a little guy-heavy, though. I think Molly Shannon and Cheri Oteri were always awesome in anything they did.

I don't see how you can argue Belushi and Eddie Murphy as the top 2. And I can't believe watchmojo put Wiig top 5 WTF

Off-screen, Tina Fey is credited as the voice of the last really good generation of SNL (say, 1999-2005 or somewhere around in there).

I stick with SNL. You can't deny that it has completely 'forgettable periods', followed by 'great TV' periods. It seems to go in cycles. Right now, I think they're in 'forgettable' mode.

Exactly. Yet Rachel Dratch at 16????? WTF!!!! I have hated Rolling Stone for some time and this shows exactly why.

Plus I always felt Belushi, Murphy and Chevy were massively over-rated. Especially Eddie Murphy.

For me Phil Hartman is easily number 1.

Re: Rolling Stone mag ranks every SNL Cast member

I think mcnabb's list is better than Rolling Stone's.

I'm not sure where I'd put him on the all-time list, but if I were picking who was the best of the current cast members, Kenan Thompson would be the cream of the crop...I don't think he gets nearly enough credit for how amazingly talented he is.

Re: Rolling Stone mag ranks every SNL Cast member

Hard to argue with mcnabb's top-10 except for Hammond (but that reflects how little I've watched the show the last decade); maybe the order (though to me there is no disputing Murphy #1), but a solid top-10.
