multi-room does not control how many shows you can record, the number of tuners on the "base" box controls that.

I've been a TiVo users for years. Current setup is a TiVo Roamio in my bonus room (6 tuners - can record 6 shows at once), with 2 TiVo Minis for additional room viewing in Bedroom and Living Room.

when a tivo mini is watching live TV, it uses a tuner on the main Roamio unit. So if i ever had 6 shows recording at the same time, then the recordings take priority and the tivo minis can only watch recorded shows. All recorded shows are stored on the base Roamio unit - no local storage on the minis.

I can't speak to the cable company offerings - been a while since I've seen them directly.
