Re: Hallmark Channel's Countdown to Christmas

I only own a handful of the gazillion Hallmark Christmas films, but luckily one of them is It's Christmas, Carol. Enjoying this for Carrie Fisher right now.

Me too. I remember recording it last year, but ended up not watching it and deleting it. It played again this morning and I just finished it. Very nice--I always like Tom Cavanagh and his love interest in this was very cute. She's a "that girl" actress whom I've seen in other things but don't know her name. And Faith Ford--whom I haven't seen since her Murphy Brown days--is still beautiful and charming.

I am all but done with the Holiday Challenge, but I am adding Its Christmas, Carol to my list tonight because of Carrie Fisher.

Re: Hallmark Channel's Countdown to Christmas

I watched Trading Christmas tonight.

I thought it was a cute Holiday romance. Faith Ford and Gil Bellows had good chemistry and were both likable.

I think I may watch 1-2 more of the 5 or so movies that I recorded and call it a Holiday. I need to get back to my regularly scheduled backlog.

Re: Hallmark Channel's Countdown to Christmas

Everybody's talking about Trading Christmas, which made me want to watch it again. It's a really charming Christmas movie. All the couples have good chemistry.

I kinda wish Hallmark would churn out fewer forgettable movies and instead invest the effort into a handful of memorable movies like Trading Christmas.

Re: Hallmark Channel's Countdown to Christmas

Trading Christmas turned out to be my last Holiday movie. I decided I needed to get back to my regular shows, so I deleted the remaining 5 or so I had recorded. On the plus side, it freed up 10 hours of DVR space.

Out of all the movies I watched, I think Heavenly Christmas was my favorite.

The story wasn't bad, I just didn't think it was all there emotionally in the second half. Sympathy for Amy's character was undercut by her brutally dumping her boyfriend in the first place.

So, yeah, the story was a mess, but I really liked Acker in it and she looked great in the tutu!

ETA: Oh, and Catherine Mary Stewart playing a grandmother makes me feel really old.
I just watched Nutcracker Christmas and kind of loved it. I like Acker, of course, but also I love the Nutcracker music from seeing it every year as a kid. Plus, I've danced a bit (but not trained), and I run a performing-arts board, so a number of pieces hit home with me.

I did like the guy, but I agree that the café conversation was a little weird in its progression. And I question the military thing as well, as it seems like a bit of a stretch that he spent time in the service during that eight years but still had the cred to become the director of a big company (he could be new, which would help explain some of his tenuous footing with the board and the company).

A few other nits: I don't think they would've really started spending time together after their previous relationship was discovered (though I know you need shorthand for a two-hour time slot); it seems like a big company would have some assistant choreographers, especially for something like Nutcracker, which has so many distinct and wildly different dances, rather than having the director teach everything; and there's no way he should've brought in Acker as an observer without introducing her and explaining why she was there. I get that he was trying to hide their past, but he could've just said she was a former pro and given her some credibility.

Our local minor league hockey team was a Mighty Ducks of Anaheim affiliate (before they became just the Ducks), so when the second film in the series was released, she came down for a promotional gig and also to take a penalty shot on our mascot in between periods. So that's where I first saw her. My favorite part about her in the Ducks movies is how in the first film, she's this gangly tall girl who's way bigger than her teammates, but by the third film, she's now this petite girl dwarfed by the same male co-stars. Shows you how the growth spurts happen so differently for boys and girls.
Forgot to say thanks for the story.

Re: Hallmark Channel's Countdown to Christmas

I finally got around to watching November Christmas this season. It's one of my favorite holiday movies, even though it doesn't have a lot to do with Christmas. An excellent cast and everyone does a great job. The story is so sweet. It always leaves me blubbering like a baby.

I've been addicted to them. I watched about 50 Hallmark movies this year. I still have around a dozen on my DVR.

I just watched that one, too. When I saw that it had Sam Elliot and Karen Allen... well, I had to watch it. They were great, and so was the little girl. Definitely a tear-jerker story.

Re: Hallmark Channel's Countdown to Christmas

Because I liked Lindy Booth in Sound of Christmas, I watched an older one called Christmas Magic. I was trying to place the actor who played the angel who sounded like Nathan Lane, and it turns out it was Andy-Andy from Cheers.

I wasn't thrilled with it at first, probably because of the lead character, but it won me over by the end.

Re: Hallmark Channel's Countdown to Christmas

I liked Christmas Magic. It took me a while to recognize that the lead guy was the doctor from Stargate: Atlantis.

Oh, and one more thing about November Christmas. I really liked the song that plays during the montage of their day out on the ranch. Really lovely. So I looked it up and bought it on Amazon.

Here's the scene with the song, "The Wild Goose" by Kate Rusby:

Nice. I'm a Rusby fan.

After watching a few of the relatively heavy dramas, I lightened things up with A December Bride and Christmas in Homestead, both good.

I'll probably try to watch the last couple I have on my DVR before calling it a year.

Re: Hallmark Channel's Countdown to Christmas

OK, so I sat down to watch one of these. After all, Hallmark Channel thinks they're good enough to run 24/7 since HALLOWEEN, so they must be high-quality shit if they're worth pre-empting my nightly reruns of Frasier and Cheers for two full months.

I chose the aforementioned Love Always, Santa, as I've already said I'm a fan of Marguerite Moreau. And what do we get ?
- predictable story where we know the two leads will connect by the end.
- precocious child actor
- a 20-minute opening, then increasing amounts of commercials (with appropriate decreasing amounts of movie) till it literally became 5 minutes of movie followed by 5 minutes of commercials.
- such a low budget that a car accident was shown off-screen just with sound effects, so as not to have to actually film a stunt sequence.

So, that said, the only proper response to Love Always, Santa is......I liked it

Seriously though, it's entirely watchable lightweight fare. I doubt I could stomach too many of these (although I've always liked both Danica McKellar and Lacey Chabert, so it's not out of the question that I'll tune in for another). The daughter was precocious, but not at all annoying and actually cute kid. Leads had chemistry, and I enjoyed watching them connect in the middle part of the film even though I knew the payoff wasn't coming till later. And the excessive commercials? Well, it was on the DVR so that's what the fast-forward button was made for.

Like I said, I won't watch as many as a lot of you have, but they're not terrible (assuming they're all on about the same level)

Re: Hallmark Channel's Countdown to Christmas

I finished up as well, can't clear the rest and also freed up space.

I probably watched about 8 movies, my favorites were mistletoe promise, christmas dream, christmas cookies, every christmas has a story and broadcasting christmas.

The key to these movies imho is the chemistry between the two leads especially a winning actress, and I Enjoyed all the performances.

See you next year!

Re: Hallmark Channel's Countdown to Christmas

This thread made me want to watch Trading Christmas again today, and it is at least my third or fourth time watching the movie. I now have it set to keep until I delete on my TiVo, so I can watch it whenever I feel the urge to do so.

A great movie to close out the holidays.

It's not a movie I watched again for 2016 but The Magic Stocking from last year is one of the best Hallmark productions. It stars Bridget Regan.

Hooray!

I just finished my last two unwatcheds that were still on the DVR--Operation Christmas and Hearts of Christmas, both of which got me with their damn tearjerker endings. Even though the plots of all of these are predictable, they managed to surprise me with certain events.

I just checked my lists for the holiday and TV challenges, and apparently I watched 16 of these this year. And that doesn't include a few others that I lost interest in and stopped watching (or the ones I watched more than once). Love Always Santa and A Nutcracker Christmas were probably my favorites, though I liked both of the Lindy Booth ones as well. Honestly, looking at the title list I can't remember what some of them were. And no Lacey Chabert, Danica McKellar, or Candace Cameron Bure for me--maybe next year!

I almost always skip the movies starring Danica McKellar or Candace Cameron Bure. I have a tough time watching actresses I saw perform as children back in the day on their respective shows.

I can't imagine how you'd feel watching Wet Hot American Summer then. No nudity, but this was Marguerite's final bit of dialogue:

Spoiler:
Listen, Coop - last night was really great. You were incredibly romantic and heroic, no doubt about it. And that's great. But I've thought about it, and my thing is this: Andy is really hot. And don't get me wrong, you're cute too, but Andy is like, *cut*. From marble. He's gorgeous. He has this beautiful face and this incredible body, and I genuinely don't care that he's kinda lame. I don't even care that he cheats on me. And I like you more than I like Andy, Coop, but I'm 16. And maybe it'll be a different story when I'm ready to get married, but right now, I am entirely about sex. I just wanna get laid. I just wanna take him and grab him and fuck his brains out, ya know? So that's where my priorities are right now. Sex. Specifically with Andy and not with you.

Re: Hallmark Channel's Countdown to Christmas

I just watched one of this year's Lifetime Channel movies called Heaven Sent. It's about a husband and wife on the verge of divorce, who look after an 8-year-old angel during Christmastime. It's got a great cast with Marley Shelton, Christian Kane and Ernie Hudson.

If you get a chance to watch it, I recommend it.
