Re: Arrow (S3E09) -- Mid-Season Finale -- "The Climb" -- 12/10/14

I agree the fight choreography was a little lame, but they couldn't really hide it in the dark like they usually do with Oliver's fights. Amell is better with the stunt stuff than the fists-to-fists combat.

I think one thing they didn't do very well is build up Ra's al Ghul as a character on Arrow. They were assuming everyone would know his background from Batman Begins and the comics. They haven't laid out any hints he's much older than he looks and that he's the head of a major international terrorist organization. He's basically a more menacing Osama bin Laden with a global terrorist network, the League of Assassins.

Other than him saying he hadn't been challenged in 67 years? I think it's good to just drip a hint or two in; I'd say it's pretty obvious we're going into Lazarus Pit territory but if they give that all away now then the cliffhanger lacks any real cliff.

Bottom line is if the goal was to make you think "OH MY GOD THEY JUST RAN HIM THROUGH WITH A SWORD HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK", it failed. It was completely meaningless. So what was the dramatic cliffhanger? No one is unclear about if Ollie will survive, yet it's played up like he's dead. As a viewer, we are simply waiting to see how he'll come back. That's kinda boring.

That's a given and they know that. That circumstance prevents it from having the same kind of dramatic heft that doing it to the non-title characters would have, doesn't invalidate doing it as a narrative device. Appearing to kill Ollie isn't lame, it's storytelling.
Sure, it's storytelling. When Game of Thrones does it, it means something. When they do it to the title character of a show on the CW, it's treading water until it returns from hiatus.

I love being surprised by stories, even when I hate the surprise (i.e. killing Sara), but I also recognize that with main characters that's less likely to happen and try not to hold it against storytellers when they choose a situation whose resolution only the truly naive in the audience would not be able to predict.
Sara's death was a surprise, definitely (and I hated it too). But Sara smacking the ground meant "dead" to me. Ollie falling off the cliff meant "not dead". It's a waste of time since we know Ollie will be back fighting crime soon enough.

I agree. If you don't know much about him from Batman:TAS or Batman Begins, I think it works better to keep him somewhat mysterious and not over hype him.

I think the Lazarus Pit exist but it wont be used in the show. Instead I think they are going to advance time a few years to have Oliver heal naturally.

How long does one need to heal from falling off a cliff after getting rammed through the chest/lung with a sword?

just wondering.

I know they'll just use the Lazarus Pit to solve everything (they practically screamed at you about its existence just before the fight began) but I would actually like it if this is what happened.

Also, Roy gets a hug but Diggle only gets a handshake? WTF, Oliver?!

Diggle towers over Oliver. Directors don't like showing up the star of the show. Oliver is a lot bigger than Roy.

Can't see them doing this unless they also advance The Flash

Keep in mind, when Oliver was climbing up to the fight, they showed the giant pile of pillows at the base of the mountain, right next to the level one trauma center. I think he'll be fine.

Oliver just happened to have a grappling arrow and wrist bow concealed in his back pocket.

I would be down for this.

Still Diggle would've made a badass John Stewart.

Oliver picked up a spare spleen while in Hong Kong so he's good to go. And I liked Felicity's dig at Roy that they thought he has Sara's killer since only a pint-sized archer could have done the deed.

I think he falls into a vat of vampire Bill's blood and it heals him.

Is that green stuff in the poster a type of Bacta Fluid?
