Episode 5 of 13

Who said John wasn't going to smoke in this series? :D

I liked the episode. Had a few problems here and there.

Towards the end of the show they gather up everybody that had a ghost. One lady had to let go of her attachment to a ghost. Why didn't the other two people have to do the same thing or why didn't they show it if they did?

I didn't understand why asking scissor ghost questions made her stop. I think they would have been better off just letting her cut immortal man up.

Loved Papa but would have thought he would have brought henchmen to do the dirty work.

Zed's vision of the cop was weird. I thought made it would turn out he was a ghost all along. Wait was he a ghost? dun dun dun

The vision at the end could have been anything. It just means the cop will be part of the next episode(s). I figure we'll get an answer from John at the beginning of next week's episode.

Jackass of all trades line made me chuckle.

This episode had two staples I always appreciate. "Enemies who are forced to work together" and "peaceful resolutions".

I know nothing about the Hellblazer comics. But I think I'm on board for watching this show long term.

Well...

Spoiler:
In the comics, Jim Corrigan was the cop who was murdered and returned from death to host the spirit of vengeance as the Spectre, a character going way back to the 1940's. What Zed saw was a premonition of all this, including the misty aura that vaguely resembled the Spectres' traditional green hood and cape.

Good news, it had a significant ratings uptick compared to last week. I like the show, so if future episodes do not crater in the ratings department we just might end up with a full season of Constantine to enjoy.

I assumed her vision was of his future death. Also note the continuity error in Zed's wardrobe when she was talking to the old woman at her house.

Spoiler:
The Spectre
could have wrapped this episode up in a second.;)

First Jim Corrigan, next I'm waiting for Jason Blood to show up. He'd be the perfect fit for the show.

That was pulled directly from the comics.

I've always thought of Jim Corrigan as an older detective, the actor didn't really look the part. It will be interesting to see how they use him, as
Spoiler:
the Spectre
really should have gotten his own show. I wonder if Constantine was a smash hit, would NBC give him his own spin-off?

I highly doubt the show will be anything close to a smash hit, it will be a miracle if it gets renewed for a second season. I did really like this episode though, it showed promise.

It's a Friday night show, it shouldn't need to be a smash hit to be renewed.

I think it gets renewed despite lukewarm ratings, as NBC will want to give the DC brand another chance.

yeah, with everyone else in comic book mode, they have to hold on to what they got. I enjoyed it and the sign of things to come for ol' Jimmy.

Just let's never get Hal Jordan near this franchise.

Deadline reported tonight that season 1 will wrap at 13 episodes. It's not cancelled though. Still in contention for a second season. Most likely Hannibal will take over the timeslot when the season wraps.

Eh, not really. 13 episodes seems to be the going rate for these types of shows. Unless it's tanking, they're not going to pull out of the comic book wars just yet. Especially with DC's movie stuff just picking up some steam. They'll hold out a bit more.

No, sorry.

No 13 episode Season One show that premiered in the Fall has been renewed for another season in years. I can't even remember the last time (maybe The Writers Strike era).

Unless it was specifically mentioned ahead of time (before it premiered) it would be a Limited episode Season (Sleepy Hollow S1, The Following) no back order = dead. No full back order (9 episodes, or enough to make 22) = dead. Unless specified earlier due to an actors demands (Kevin Bacon, girl from How to Get Away or in other shows cases, maybe a pregnancy).

Too many comics shows this fall and this one has had the most "meh" reception, it's a goner.

Re: Constantine (S1E05) -- "Danse Vaudou" -- 11/21/14

I wish the CW would take it off of NBC's hands...loosely link the show to Arrow and The Flash, do whatever things NBC may be afraid to do with the show and you'll have a nice show with at least a cult following that will last.

PhantomStranger 11-24-14 07:43 PM

Re: Constantine (S1E05) -- "Danse Vaudou" -- 11/21/14

If it does get canceled, I don't think five episodes were enough to render a proper verdict on its future. The show probably needs a little retooling, but I could imagine a much stronger second season after feedback. I think NBC is trying everything they can in this 10 PM Friday Death slot and seeing what sticks. It would have done better with more promotion and on another night.

Re: Constantine (S1E05) -- "Danse Vaudou" -- 11/21/14

Apologies, but my daughter and I are working through our Constantine backlog tonight ...

This was the best episode since the premiere. This is also the first one to really have any tie to the central plotline (the "darkness rising"). IMO, that has been the show's biggest issue - it has been a series of throwaway standalone episodes. Sure, there are a few throwaway lines to try to tie it together, but it has not been enough.

The pilot provided us with the intro to John and his tragic past, but then we have done very little to continue to unravel that. Just a bunch of "evil of the week" episodes.

PhantomStranger 12-06-14 02:31 PM

Re: Constantine (S1E05) -- "Danse Vaudou" -- 11/21/14

Early standalone episodes kill the momentum of these ultra-niche genre shows.
