Removing John's smoking is almost like removing Superman's weakness to kryptonite. Its a major issue in the comics that nearly destroys him.

I have never read the comic. I did see the movie but don't remember it. I enjoyed the pilot episode. The "bad guy" was rather undeveloped beyond a faceless "demon of the week" which made it hard to care about why Constantine was fighting the demon. The Constantine character was very much a tragic comic hero and the actor did a great job with it. This has some potential ... Hopefully it develops!
I find it the height of arrogance for someone that has never read the comics to question smoking's importance to John Constantine. It is visually referenced practically several times in each issue and what distinguishes the character, besides his nationality, from dozens of other occult characters in comics. Constantine's smoking is a key element of his personality.

The closest thing I can compare it to is removing Superman's cape or famous symbol. I still plan to watch but it is a serious omission driven by Hollywood's politics.

They removed his Bi-sexuality so it doesn't surprise me that they want to remove his smoking.

Shonda Rymes should write this show.

Can you imagine how ape shit crazy people would get if Twin Peaks aired today on network TV with all of the teenage characters smoking?

It's implied that he might have had a handful of same-sex encounters in his past, but it's more of a blink and you'll miss it kind of thing.

Doesn't really seem like much a stretch that someone like John, wide boy punk rock hanger-on, would have smoked a few sausages when he was younger.

Comic fanboys.

I get it. It's like Don Draper without the booze. But look at it with another set of eyes:

Newby: What's this Constantine show? Is something about Rome?

Constable Constantine: No! It's based on a kick ass comic book!

Newby: So what does this superhero do?

Constable Constantine: He fuckin' smokes, man.

Newby: Fuck Marvel and trying to milk every lame comic book. Is the third season of Revolution on yet?

Arrogance? You're just jealous of my 12 inch cock, 80 foot yacht, and my harem of starlets. Arrogance? Bah.

I agree that smoking wouldn't be an intrinsic personality trait for most characters. John Constantine would be the exception. Wolverine smoked a lot in the comics since he had his healing powers, but they've never really used that in the movies. I didn't have a problem with Fox dropping Wolverine's smoking.

It's a strange world where NBC broadcasts Hannibal, which frequently shows cannibalism and the most shocking graphic imagery ever on network television, but won't allow one character to smoke on another series.

Well smoking gives you cancer. Cannibalism just makes you stronger.

It didnt remind me of Supernatural since Ive never seen Supernatural. I thought the tone was off. I will stick with it for the time being but I was expecting more.

Well, they did show him putting out a cigarette in the bar, although he is supposed to be a chain smoker, and in the original Vertigo comics (I haven't been following the New52 character) that leads to his downfall.

Re: Constantine (S1E01) -- Series Premiere -- "Non Est Asylum" -- 10/24/14

Just finished watching the first episode and i was pretty good. Nothing amazing, but i can see it getting better and being an entertaining show.

I actually liked the movie version of Constantine. Its the same thing as the Jack Reacher movie. I knew of the source, but did not hold it so dear that i could not get past changes to the character. The TV show is doing away with the smoking and i think this is a little harder to accept given the fact that so much of the story comes from this aspect of the character.

Still, on board and looking forward to upcoming episodes. The main actor by the way did a great job.
