So I can get HBO for $10 a month on Verizon. I don't get it because that's a promo price for a year and I hate messing around with Verizon billing. If stand alone HBOGO was $10 I think that would be a price point that would get me to sign up.

This appears to be a game changer especially if this actually happens. I'm sure the cable companies will get their money elsewhere (increased rates, fees, etc).

its done deal:
From HBO press release: "It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO."

i hope its same price range as amazon prime and netflix
could be higher than $15-20 due cable/satellite current contracts??

The big thing for me will be what kind of back catalog they offer. For example, can I get all seasons of Thrones, or only the current?

No way HBO would only charge $8 a month.

They could -- if they cut out the middle man (cable / sat provider) they could have a similar return with direct to customer.

Also - they may be seeing low HBO subscribers due to amazon / netflix - so a discounted price may get more subscribers.

I would love this pricing model... Hope this puts a fire under the arse of the cable providers to provide ala carte pricing of channels.

This is great news in general, but the pricing model is what I'm interested in.

Well, of course, they COULD. :D But they're HBO, and they've always had premium pricing (at least for their original content). I think they're looking at people who would cut their cable altogether and trying to get a piece of that pie. Since people pay at minimum a $10 add-on for cable, they'd charge at least that and probably more.

I've never had HBO so I tend to think only of their original programming, but it's interesting that deadline says 40% of subscribers only watch movies, and 75% of linear viewing is movies. Given that, I could certainly see other streaming services taking a piece of their action. HBO's content is probably newer, but we know that a lot of people are content to wait.

No question the viewing world has changed drastically so they're adapting.

All I need is for MLB and NHL to remove blackout restrictions for local teams through their apps and I can cut the cord.

I would love for it to happen, but the regional sports networks will never cave in considering how much they are paying for the rights.

Maybe the RSN's will get on board w/ setting up channels for media streamers.

Was HBO Go only "live" or "on-demand" like Netflix?

I imagine the standalone fees would be similar to porn subscriptions: $30/1 month, $75/3 months, $120/6 months, etc.

HBO GO is only On Demand and they have every episode of Game of Thrones, True Blood, and pretty much every episode of every HBO series that has ever aired.

Do they include shows they own but don't actually air, like Strike Back and Banshee?

No, that's on Max Go, their Cinemax counterpart, which is PC, smartphone, and tablet only. No gaming console or Roku version.

So this new standalone would be the same as HBO Go or be "live"?

It sounds like just a stand alone version of HBO Go.

Interesting thing about Showtime Anytime, the tablet version has a live stream.

I always got annoyed by the Chromecast ads that showed the HBO logo, implying that you could get HBO just by paying $59.95 for the Chromecast gizmo.

The softcore porn on Maxgo might be a factor keeping it away from consoles and Roku. Gotta protect the curious kids you know. ;)

I have Cinemax and Maxgo has a lot of softcore porn.

Good thing HBO has highbrow nudity, I guess.

I was thinking the same thing when I read the article. I know some people that probably wouldn't mind paying $15-20 per month because they only have basic cable and no premium channels, or they will cut the cord as others have mentioned. I also see some people without cable willing to pay that price range.
