Boardwalk Empire (S5E06) - "Devil You Know" - 10/12/14

https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...9df6816f20e108

In Harlem, Chalky encounters Narcisse (Jeffrey Wright) in hopes of setting Daughter Maitland (Margot Bingham) free. Federal agents enlist Eli and Van Alden to help take down the Capone organization. Pained by a recent loss, Nucky turns to the bottle, and the company of a pair of barflies. In 1897, young Nucky vents his frustration to Mabel (Maya Kazan) after endorsing Jim Neary (Scott Francis Moreau), and roots out a young thief with Eli's (Ryan Dinning) help.

Written by Howard Korder; directed by Jeremy Podeswa.

I guess everyone DVR'd this in favor of Walking Dead.

Holy Shit!

Poor Nelson Van Alden just had the worst day ever. With him dead, Eli on the run, and the feds with the ledgers have to imagine, with just 2 episodes left, we won't be spending much time in Chicago.

Chalky's part just seemed like filler for awhile so not really surprised they wacked him tonight as well.

Wow. Things are really coming to a head but that really sucked seeing Van Alden go.

I thought they ended Chalky's storyline really well.

Episode already aired, anything that happened in this episode isn't a spoiler.

Fair enough. Who other than HBO would off two high-profile characters in the same episode?

Fuck! Van Alden goes, and Eli still carries on.

A bit too predictable that the whores were going to roll Nucky.

It was interesting to see where Gillian came from, but I thought the younger Nucky flashbacks were more interesting than the current ones.

Great episode. Sad to see Van Alden go but his character deserved a momentous send off.

Maybe I was tired but I'm not entirely clear on why Chalky just accepted his fate like that.

Yeah, that whole story wasn't really clear to me. What happened? What was the bargain Chaulky and Narcisse made?

The other way around actually so I can fast forward thru the commercials on TWD.

Chalky's part was not filler. That was probably his daughter and he's a pretty important. More important than Van Alden. I fail to see what is so spectacular about Van Alden. His character was sort of interesting at times from the time his job at the bureau unraveled but not as much love as people give it.

He really had nothing to live for at that point. He was a wanted man, his family had moved away from him, he lost his daughter, didn't really have a path in life anymore and wanted to make sure Daughter and what we think was his daughter had a chance being away from Narcisse.

Great episode. I think it's becoming clearer that the new kid working for Doyle is Tommy Darmody. I didn't realize how much he resembles Michael Pitt. With the casting that they've been doing this season, it would be surprising if he wasn't Tommy.

I thought Chalky's end was great. I don't think he went in with the intention of dying. He just saw an opportunity to help the last person that he truly cared about.

Yeah I mean he clearly resembled Jimmy. I wonder if he will reveal it to Nucky or will Nucky figure out or has he already and what his plan is or if he has a plan for Nucky.

The kid looks a few years too old to be Tommy - even though he may be.

They could've done better in casting young Eli. He looked a lot like Jimmy - which made me confused for a second before I remembered that Jimmy would've been a child at the oldest.

They seemed to focus on the sandwich a little too much. Was it an attempt to poison Nucky that's been wasted?

It kind of sucks that we're using historical figures since we know that the people Nucky wants to get revenge on survive. Luciano, Meyer and Torrio will live.

Where exactly was Nucky knocked out where the new kid (Tommy?) just happened to come across him? I was under the impression it was some random bar outside of his usual hang-outs.

Wow, what an episode. 2 major players dead...and apparently Nucky going after Lucky with an army of men.

It took a few episodes for me to get into this show but I'm glad I stuck with it. One of the best shows over the last decade plus.

I doubt it was poisoned, since the bodyguard (who wasn't on his toes this time) started eating one and was fine. But something significant has to be up with that kid, good or bad.

Yeah it's weird that nobody is watching this compared to other shows, but I'm sure it'll get more recognized in the years to come.

Yeah, that seemed like some bullshit happenstance. The writing seems to be getting weaker the further along we get. I guess it's a good thing that this is the last season.

Poor Michael K Williams, he never seems to get to go out like a badass.

I hope he gets cast in a another show quick... maybe in the next Scorsese/Winter project?

Doyle told that kid to make the pick ups earlier that night, which is what the kid was doing at the bar. Nucky stays in one place all night, the kid goes to the local bars, they meet.

He didn't go out blasting, but he sorta went out on his own terms here and even had a slight smile on his face as he was about to get it. Thought it was a good way to go out considering the faith of other characters.

And I agree, I hope he's in more projects immediately, him in a Scorsese movie would be great.
