No TV for one year

Could you live without watching TV for one year?

DeadLamb 10-12-14 06:05 AM

Re: No TV for one year

Sure, no problem... If we are talking about just never turning on my tv/pc and watching programs or movies for a year. I would just catch up on anything I feel is a must watch tv show a year later.

the only tricky issue is one of a social nature. Like can I watch a film at a friend's home on their tv every now and then or do I have be the weird one who leaves when ever a tv is turned on?

but other then that, no problem.. it's just not a big deal to watch stuff years later vs "right now'. For example I never watched an ep of Breaking Bad until just this summer (when I watched them all)..

Re: No TV for one year

This means current run tv show episodes on a tv or online?

Since a lot can be watched online I personal take watch tv to mean new shows by any means you can.

And my answer would be a huge NO!

I have selected programs I watch without any real extras based on how I watch tv shows.

I need some type of entertainment to go along with regular internet stuff.

of course I could, but why would I?

Re: No TV for one year

Did that before.

On and off over the 1990's and 2000's, I didn't own a tv at all.

The longest stretch was around 3.5 years during the mid-late 1990's.

Another stretch was during the early-mid 2000's, when the ex-wive got the tv in the divorce. At the time, I was too lazy to buy a new tv.

This is the main reason why I'm still somewhat ignorant of 1990's and early-mid 2000's era television shows.

I assume iTunes and all forms of streaming are out too?

I'd probably kill myself. Then again I'm going to end up doing that at some point anyway.

Nope for one reason...

SPORTS

Everything else would just be backlogged a year.

Easily; if you're talking live TV or even DVR. I pretty much haven't watched TV most of the last three years. DVDs and AmazonPrime are all I need for screen entertainment.

Are you kidding? People who could wouldn't be in the TV Forum and available to answer the question.

Re: No TV for one year

Of course I could give it up for a year. I'd just go to the movies more often and listen to sports on the radio. I might even go to a few more games in person.

Now would I really want to? No.

I could live without TV, but it would be an absolutely miserable year.

Re: No TV for one year

Maybe... sports would be the hardest thing to give up. That and popular shows that everyone else talks about like Walking Dead or Game of Thrones.

No I couldn't and I don't want to.

I probably could do it but I wouldn't really want to.

Re: No TV for one year

Probably not, because of sports. Seems like I watch 95% of my scripted shows on my desktop or tablet as it is, so delaying it for a year wouldn't be an issue.

Are there any exceptions for news, though? I get most of my news online these days, but I'd hate to think some silly bet would keep me from watching the news if something really important happened.

Could you? Of course! Would you want to? Hell No!

Yeah. It'd be easy. TV as a source is just extra fun for me. I just watch what it has when I have the time.

Simply for sports. I don't watch anything now that I couldn't do without for a year.

The TV industry is my career, so no.

Only time I'm away from the tube for an extended period of time is when I travel overseas on vacation.

Broadcast TV? Cable TV? Streaming TV? Home video/Netflix/Hulu? GROIN??

Drexl 10-12-14 03:55 PM

Re: No TV for one year

This used to be a much simpler question. Now, it's "Live TV only, or does DVR count?" "Just new shows, or can I watch old shows?" "What about streaming to a Roku box?" "Discs?" "What if it's streamed to a PC or tablet?" "How about video games?"

Eventually the people behind TV Turnoff Week changed it to Screen-Free Week. "But can I still check my e-mail?" "What if I have to pay a bill online?" and so on...

Re: No TV for one year

I probably couldn't go without TV for a year. Like others in this thread, sports is part of the reason. I also write screenplays and I sometimes watch movies and shows as case studies.

The elementary and middle schools I attended heavily promoted TV turnoff week back in the 90s. There were several kids that said they and their families were able to do TV turnoff week because they weren't huge TV watchers to begin with.

These days, I know a lot of people who don't watch live TV whether it's broadcast or cable, but some of those people stream a lot of shows, movies, and documentaries on TVs, computers, and tablets. The only person that I know who doesn't watch any kind of screen for entertainment is one of my neighbors. She is in her 70s and is a hippie type. She doesn't own a TV or computer. She reads a lot or does art work while listening to music.

My parents try to balance hobbies, reading with TV and movies. But they wouldn't be able to live without TV for a year due to sports and a lot of documentary shows they like watching on cable. I try to do the same. But they are times I don't feel like reading books and I will watch a lot of TV.

Do I get anything for it? Or just a dare.

I'd say no.

Re: No TV for one year

Yes. Ive already done it, more or less. Years ago when my tv tuner died I could only watch dvds. So thats what I did. No broadcast tv for me.

Even now I dont watch tv live. I watch all my shows on xbox live via apps like hulu.

Original Desmond 10-13-14 02:21 AM

Re: No TV for one year

I read this as being without your TV set and that would include watching anything on a laptop

Watching dvds/blurays would be cheating for me

Nth Power 10-13-14 02:34 AM

Re: No TV for one year

I don't think I'd be able to. If it were broadcast TV only, I probably could, but not if it includes DVDs or stuff on the internet.

Re: No TV for one year

I'd only count "no TV" as being no broadcast TV, and I can easily live without that. I hadn't gotten an HDTV yet when the analog stations went off the air in 2009, so for about 6 months until I finally got a new TV I only got two low-power analog stations, one showing Home Shopping Network and the other foreign shows. Last full-power station I saw was this:
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/M6JxTEKWM7k" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This thread should probably be in "Other" to be more accurate, as I bet a lot of people who don't watch TV don't even check this section. (Still not even sure why I do!)

Re: No TV for one year

The only thing I watch on TV anymore is sports, so probably. I'd hate to miss the World Series or March Madness, but...

The way things are going, with more an more sporting events on cable only, this decision is being made for me.

Shows I could probably live without...but I'm too much of a political/news junkie and sports fan to be able to do this.
