Mulaney (FOX) - Season 1 Thread - premiering 10/5/14

From Emmy Award-winning writer and comedian John Mulaney ("Saturday Night Live") comes MULANEY, a multi-camera ensemble comedy series about a rising stand-up comic trying to take his career to the next level and the friends and mentors who lift him up, hold him back and push him around. JOHN MULANEY is a 29-year-old comedian working the stand-up circuit and looking for his big break. But life drastically changes when self-centered comedy legend and game show host LOU CANNON (Emmy Award winner Martin Short, "SCTV," "Saturday Night Live," "Father of the Bride," "Primetime Glick") hires Mulaney as a writer. Lou may be John's entrée into the world of big-money show business, but he's also a total nightmare. Still, the job represents everything Mulaney thinks he wants. But does he really? And, at what cost? And what does it say about him if he quits? And what does it say about him if he stays? And has Lou had work done? Mulaney's life becomes a tug-of-war between the stress of his new job and his guilt over not being there for his two best friends and roommates: JANE (Nasim Pedrad, "Saturday Night Live"), a tightly wound, yet directionless personal trainer; and MOTIF (Seaton Smith, "Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell"), a powerhouse comic who shares nothing in common with Mulaney - except the world of stand-up. Rounding out this odd group of friends is ANDRE (Zack Pearlman, "The Inbetweeners"), a trust-fund baby who has a knack for showing up in Mulaney's life at the worst possible moments. If Mulaney has one refuge from the chaos that surrounds him, then it's his neighbor, OSCAR (Academy Award nominee Elliott Gould, "M*A*S*H," "The Long Goodbye," the "Oceans 11" franchise), a 71-year-old gay veteran of New York who has seen it all. Oscar is opinionated, refined, gentle, wise and sometimes extremely cantankerous, but most of all, he's an oracle of sound advice when Mulaney feels like life has gone off the rails. A unique mix of ensemble comedy, stand-up performances and an observational point-of-view, MULANEY is a show about the big questions in life: how hard they are to answer and how easy it is to maybe just ignore them and pray they go away. MULANEY is produced by Universal Television, Broadway Video and 3 Arts Entertainment. The series is created and written by John Mulaney. The series is executive-produced by Mulaney, Lorne Michaels ("Saturday Night Live," "30 Rock"), David Miner ("30 Rock"), Dave Becky ("Louie"), Jon Pollack ("30 Rock") and Andrew Singer ("Portlandia," "30 Rock"). Andy Ackerman ("Seinfeld") serves as both director and executive producer.

Love his stand up. Will be in for the season unless it is completely awful.

Yeah, he's very funny as a stand-up and I want to like this but I don't think I've laughed at any jokes in any of the several previews I've seen. Hopefully it's better than it looks.

It's just like Seinfeld!*
*Except:
Mulaney is 10 times stiffer than Jerry Seinfeld on his worst day. Seinfeld wasn't much of an actor, but he at least made his character sound like an actual human. Mulaney constantly sounds like he's doing his stand up routine. This is made worse by the fact that they started the show...with him doing stand up!
We have a gay Kramer, a psycho Elaine (though Nasim Pedrad is probably the best thing here), a Newman clone drug dealer, and a Token black George. Plus, a horrible, obviously canned laugh track. Oh, and Martin Short's there too.
It's easy to see why NBC passed on this...FOX of course greenlit Dads last year, so there you go.

Wow, this was horrible. I had never heard of this guy before and I didn't even find his stand-up to be all that funny.

I actually liked Mulaney as a main character--he did remind me of Seinfeld, even in some of his delivery.
What I couldn't stand was the entire supporting cast (except the assistant on the phone). His roommate was clueless, the girl was just mean--I don't believe for a second they'd be friends. The stoner neighbor was an attempt to recreate a Newman, but with no purpose but to be hated. Martin Short overplayed his character.
I think Mulaney could have a future in sitcoms, but not this one.

Wife and I had no intention of watching this, but we were putting together furniture after Family Guy and it came on.
5 mins in my wife says, "So is this a parody of Seinfeld, cause it sucks!"
She was right. It plays just like "Dads," a bunch of people spitting out mediocre lines they learned the day before like a middle school play.
OUT!

Mulaney was the lowest-rated show of the evening on Fox. While everything on Fox was way down last night, even Bob's Burgers at 7:30pm beat Mulaney:
Simpsons (repeat) - 4.12 million / 1.5
Bob's Burgers - 3.16 million / 1.4
Simpsons - 4.32 million / 2.0
Brooklyn 99 - 3.31 million / 1.6
Family Guy - 3.68 million / 1.9
Mulaney - 2.34 million / 1.0

bombed as expected. Received a 1.0 in the demos. The scheduling monkeys over at Fox must just make things up as they go along/fling poop against the wall. Why not premiere this show LAST week when they had football overrun and the strong Family Guy/Simpsons crossover?

I turned it off 10 minutes in. Not good. Too bad because I think John Mulaney's stand up is hilarious. They tried to turn his stand up bits into situations for the show and it didn't work. On top of that Mulaney's delivery works in stand up but comes off pretty bad for a sitcom.
This one won't be on long.
I'd marry Nasim Perdrad right now, no questions asked.

I had never heard of the guy until Fox started showing the promos. I thought it could not be too bad if it had Martin Short and Elliot Gould. I was wrong. Terrible acting and writing all around.

Heh. I got this guy's name mixed up with Megan Mullally, and thought the show would be about her. The 5 minutes I watched were interminable. I've never heard of this, guy, but judging from this show, he sucks hard.

Never heard of the guy either - and if the sample of stand up at the beginning is typical, no wonder. He sucks hard as both a comedian and an actor. Show was abysmal.

Fox just cut the episode order from 16 down to 13 (which just finished taping).
It's now dead.
