SNL (s40e02) -- 10/04/14 -- H: Sarah Silverman -- MG: Maroon 5
I am not excited for this one... I'm not a Sarah Silverman fan... never have been.

But I like Maroon 5.

Cripes almighty. After the agonizing singing duo on WU we have yet another singing skit. Can they do one show without the endless singing?

Watching now on my DVR. As mentioned above, great monologue. But Sarah messed up on her lines several times during the Joan Rivers skit.
The "Rolling on the River" skit was fucking awful. The car ride engagement skit was equally terrible, if not worse. When will Lorne Michaels
(if not NBC) realize that the problem with this show is the awful writing. It's not cast. Stop hiring and firing your actors every single year
and get new writers. Why is this so hard to understand?

This was the first episode in a long time where I didn't come away completely disgusted - still some horrible wtf writing, but some of the skits were OK. Silverman really muffed a potentially great bit by fumbling over her lines in the Joan Rivers sketch. I liked the engagement skit, and the commercial/movie parodies were good. That riverboat sketch was clearly a ripoff of the 4 dudes in a bar singing classic rock tunes while telling terrible stories about themselves skit.

I'm not even DVR'ing the show anymore opting rather to catch clips online that look like they might be interesting. Watched the monologue, the Joan Rivers and Ebola clips. Anything else worth my time?

I was curious, so I compared the writers' credits on IMDB for this year's opener to last. Of the 24 writers listed (one of which is Lorne), 10 are new. Of the head writers, 2 of the 3 are the same, with Seth Meyers' replacement being a new writer, not a promotion. Weekend Update's writer is different.

I have always gotten the sense that there's a lot of behind the scenes politics going on with SNL; where certain writers, stars, and characters are favored at the expense of better material.
Which is why the show was flooded with so many shitty recurring Wiig characters a few years ago, why horrible, unfunny stuff like "Coffee Talk" was on every goddamned week, and why, when we are shown rejected sketches, superior material seems to land on the cutting room floor.

Not a single skit with the new tall, skinny guy.

The Joan rivers skit would have been great had Silverman not flubbed her lines. I actually enjoyed WU minus the stupid singing. Michael Che seemed to have better timing this week and was actually funny.

Well, I thought the first "Coffee Talk" was hilarious. But that's the problem with SNL: they take something funny and run it into the damn ground. I hate to sound like an old fart, but I don't think they did this nearly as much in the 80s.I stopped watching in the 90s, 'cos it was the same five skits over and over.

WU was much better this time. The Al Sharpton visit was good and Jost and Che had better chemistry this time. I loved the "Legendary #2" joke.

"If you liked the sketch SNL did about a Tina Turner tribute band musing and singing... then you'll LOVE this sketch Vanessa Bruiser Ragland and I wrote and performed for six weeks this summer at Groundlings about a Tina Turner tribute band musing and singing."

I won't bother beating the SNL dead horse further this week other than to say that after four months off they could have at least found some better sketches to steal.
